Chapter 281: 281:Who Did This?
The prison guards yawned as the first bright light of dawn spilled across the stone corridor.Their eyes were heavy, and their steps dragged as they carried a metal food tray between them.
The air was cold and damp, and the silence of the prison pressed on their nerves. One of them stretched his neck and sighed, trying to shake off his sleepiness.
Then the warden’s low voice stopped him cold.
“Be careful,” the warden warned.
“Don’t piss him off.”
“If you anger him, he might beat you to death.”
The guard shivered when he heard that.
GULP!
He swallowed his saliva hard and nodded, gripping the tray tighter.”Yes… yes, sir,” he muttered, forcing his legs to move.
He walked forward and stopped in front of the cell. The iron door creaked as he opened it and stepped inside.
For a moment, everything was silent.
Too silent. It felt like even the air had stopped moving.
“Huh… why is it so calm?” he whispered.
He looked around and saw the man sitting on the chair, his broad back facing him.The figure did not move. The guard forced himself to speak.
“Sir… Here is your breakfast.”
There was no response.
The silence grew heavier, squeezing his chest. His heartbeat sounded loud in his ears.
He waited for a shout, a curse, anything.
Nothing came.Fear crawled up his spine.
He slowly placed the tray on the table, his hands trembling.”Sir?” he called again, his voice weaker now.
His throat went dry.He did not want to stay there any longer.Turning around, he decided to leave quietly. But the moment he took a step back, something fell.
THUD!
“Huuhh!”
He jumped in shock, nearly dropping to the ground.
The burly figure had fallen forward onto the floor.
The sound echoed through the cell.
The guard’s mind went blank. For a moment, he was scared out of his wits. His legs trembled so badly he could barely stand.
The body did not move.
“Wait a minute…” he whispered.
“Why can’t I feel his life’s presence?”
Cold air rushed into his lungs as he sucked in a sharp breath. His instincts screamed at him to run, but his feet refused to move.
Step by step, he inched closer. With shaking hands, he grabbed the body and turned it over.
“AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!”
A terrifying scream tore from his throat.
The face staring back at him was twisted beyond human recognition.Bones were bent at impossible angles, skin bruised and broken, eyes wide open and empty. It did not look like a man anymore. It looked like something dragged out of a nightmare.
The guard crawled backward in terror, his hands scraping against the stone floor.
“GHOST!” he screamed.
“GHOST!”
“KYAAA!”
He turned around and ran as fast as he could.
His screams echoed through the prison corridors.Panic spread like fire, and guards rushed out of their posts in confusion.
The entire prison descended into chaos.
After a hurried check, the truth was confirmed.
Simon was dead.Especially the warden, who almost pissed himself when he saw the body.
Fear spread across his face as he realized what kind of trouble was coming for him.
…
The news shook the entire capital.
The death of Simon made everyone shiver.
A King-rank Knight had died in broad daylight under the King’s throne.
It was terrifying.
More than that, people were horrified just thinking about who could have done it.
“What is this bullshit!”King Mark slammed his fist on the armrest of his throne.
“Is there even law and order anymore?”
“Killed directly under my rule?”
“Who did this?”
“Just who!”
At that moment, Duke Longburn turned his gaze toward Ethan. One by one, the nobles followed.
Cough!
Ethan cleared his throat and spoke calmly.”Your Majesty… it can be anyone but me.”
“Why not you?” Mark asked, confused.
“Your Majesty, just think,” Ethan said.
“Who had enmity with that man?”
“It was me, right?”
“Then no matter who killed him, I would be under suspicion.”
“I wouldn’t be an idiot to do that and get myself killed.”
“But what if that’s exactly what you did?” Duke Keeves pressed.
“You used that opportunity to kill him. Isn’t that darkness under the lamp?”
Ethan glared at him sharply.’Just you wait… I will remember you and write your name on my list.’
For a moment, Duke Keeves felt a strange chill.
“Yes… you might have used that disguise,” he insisted.
“Your Majesty, they are pinning their anger on me,” Ethan said.
“Even if I did it, how could I do it so swiftly?”
“I killed without making any noise?”
“Did you forget our battle?”
“It shook the area. How could I subdue him quietly?”
Mark frowned deeply and shouted,”Auster! Where the hell did you die? Show yourself!”
Auster appeared instantly and bowed.
“Yes, Your Majesty.”
“What did you find? Any sign of poison?” Mark asked.
Auster shook his head.”We examined the body. There was no poison.”
“The man was beaten and tortured.”
“We checked thoroughly.”
“Just how?” Duke Keeves asked in shock.
Auster spoke carefully.”My guess is that he was kidnapped at midnight using spatial magic.”
“He was tortured, killed, and then left back here.”
“There may have been a mage who silenced everything.”
As the nobles reached different conclusions, Ethan smiled inwardly. After killing Simon, he had used his insignia to remove all poison traces.
The Goddess of Light’s blessing gave him resistance to disease and poison.Unless it was god-level poison, nothing could affect him.
“Enough!” Mark shouted, unable to tolerate it anymore.
“Auster, Baltar, investigate carefully and submit the results.”
“Yes, Your Majesty.”
“And you!” Mark pointed at Ethan.
Ethan stiffened.”I have already sent a list,” Mark said coldly.I will give you one day.”
“Choose.”
Ethan shrank back and bowed deeply.”I will, Your Majesty.”
“Adjourn,” Mark said, waving his hand.
As everyone walked away, Baltar glared at Ethan coldly.
He was sure Ethan had killed Simon. But he had no proof.
“Stop glaring at him,” Auster whispered.
“Don’t piss him off, or you might be next.”
Baltar froze.
’Enjoy it while you can,’ he thought bitterly.
’I will see who has the last laugh.’
Meanwhile, inside an inn.
“This is the list,” Randall said, handing Ethan a file.
Ethan raised his brows and took it.
“So many?”
“Not many,” Randall replied. “Just five.”
“This contains all the information Black Thorns managed to gather.”
Ethan sucked in a cold breath.”Anyone noteworthy?”
“Not that I know,” Randall said.
“They are all the same.”
“….”
