Chapter 282: 282:The Cursed Witch[Bonus]
“??”
Question marks almost flashed across Ethan’s face as he looked at Randall. His brows furrowed and his gaze sharpened.
“What do you mean they are all the same?” Ethan asked.
Randall sighed and shook his head. “I mean all of them are bad in one way or another. No matter how you look at it, how can a straight seed come out from a crooked plant?”
Ethan frowned and waved his hand in annoyance. “Uncle, just keep your personal opinions to yourself and tell me what you actually know.”
Randall nodded and leaned forward. Ethan opened the file placed before him and began reading while Randall explained everything in detail.
“The first Princess is the eldest daughter of the King,” Randall said. “She is already forty years old and still unmarried. I heard she is a whore. She has had an ample number of boy toys over the years. Nobles, knights, and even merchants have been rumored to visit her chambers secretly.”
Ethan’s expression remained calm, but his fingers tightened slightly on the file as he turned the page.
“The second Princess is a spendthrift and extremely arrogant,” Randall continued. “She wastes gold without thinking. She believes the kingdom exists to satisfy her desires. Many people avoid her because she humiliates those beneath her status.”
Ethan let out a slow breath and continued reading.
“The third Princess is haughty and wild,” Randall said. “She enjoys playing with men and causing trouble. She is known for her naughty behavior and reckless attitude. Scandals follow her wherever she goes, and she does not care about the consequences.”
Ethan’s eyes darkened slightly as he flipped to the next section.
“The fourth Princess,” Randall said after a pause, “is different. There is not much information about her. She rarely appears in public. However, one thing is clear. She is the one most loved by the King. She is the only daughter King Mark truly pays attention to.”
Ethan stopped for a brief moment before turning the page again.
“The fifth Princess is said to be cursed,” Randall said in a lower voice. “Anyone who befriends her dies. Servants assigned to her fall sick or disappear. Guards refuse to stay near her for long. People say misfortune follows her wherever she goes.”
The room fell into a heavy silence.
At the end of the file, Ethan noticed a subtle note written by his men.
[Since this is a purely political marriage, no matter what you choose, do not choose the Fourth Princess.]
Ethan read the note twice before closing the file halfway.
“There aren’t even pictures,” Ethan muttered. “But from the descriptions, the First and Fourth Princess are said to be the most beautiful. The Fifth Princess, on the other hand, is said to be the ugliest.”
Randall nodded. “That’s what the rumors say.”
Ethan continued reading the final part carefully. The Fifth Princess was born out of wedlock. It was rumored that her mother was cursed by a witch. Because of that curse, the King killed her mother. Later, people believed the curse transferred to the Fifth Princess herself.
“What’s with this bullshit?” Ethan said, his voice filled with disbelief. “Cursed by a witch?”
He looked at Randall for confirmation.
Randall shook his head slowly. “I don’t know much about witches. They are very mysterious beings. But I have heard one thing. A witch’s curse can only be resolved by a witch herself.”
For some reason, those words caught Ethan’s interest.
In this world, witches were not the same as wizards. Wizards were simply male mages, and female mages were still called mages. Witches, however, were entirely different beings, treated as a separate species altogether who had the power to curse individuals.
They can’t reproduce yet they are extremely beautiful.
“My Lord,” Randall asked carefully, “whom are you going to choose?”
Ethan closed his eyes and leaned back in his chair. His expression turned solemn as he thought through everything once more. Politics, danger, rumors, and hidden traps all flashed through his mind.
After a long moment, he opened his eyes.
“I have chosen,” Ethan said calmly.
Randall stiffened. “Who?”
“It’s going to be her,” Ethan replied in a steady voice.
….
“Is this the place?”
“Yes, it is.”
“Blergh!”
“What a horrible place. It looks like this place hasn’t been cleaned properly at all.”
“That’s because which maid would dare come here? It’s said those who come in contact with her are also cursed.”
“Wha???? Then we—”
The other maid shivered and stopped in her tracks, her face turning pale.
“Is the reason the Head Maid chose us because he wanted us to die?”
“No,I mean those who become friends with her die. We are just here to do our job,” the first maid said quickly.
That explanation eased them a little.
“Damn it. Out of all people, why did he have to choose this bitch? Ahhh!”
“Just why!”
The two maids cursed quietly as they walked forward. There were so many beautiful women in the palace, yet the Baron had chosen her of all people.
They pushed open the door and stepped inside.
The room was small and suffocating. Dust covered the corners and spider webs clung to the ceiling. The smell of damp stone and old medicine filled the air. Torn curtains barely blocked the moonlight, and broken furniture lay scattered like discarded bones.
At the very end of the room sat a woman, crouched on the floor. She had wrapped herself in a thin cloth, and a dark veil covered her face.
Horror crept up the maids’ spines.
Hearing footsteps, the woman slowly raised her head.
“Who!”
Her voice screeched out.It was sharp and grating, like nails scraping against metal. The sound alone made their hearts jolt.
As her head moved, the veil slipped from her face.
“Kyaaa!”
Both maids screamed and stumbled back.
Her appearance was terrifying. She looked frail, almost starved. Her eyes were hollow and dark, sunken deep into her face. Large black patches stained her skin, and countless scars crisscrossed her body. Some looked like old burns, others like deep cuts that never healed.
“Why have you come here?” she asked.
She grinned as she spoke, lifting her head slightly. Her smile was twisted, yet there was confidence in it. Her cold, hollow eyes locked onto the maids, making them feel as if their very life was being pulled out of them.
The two maids glanced at each other nervously.
“You have been chosen,” one of them said.
“Chosen?” The woman tilted her head, confusion flickering across her face.
“Yes….Chosen for marriage.”
“Marriage?”
“You are going to marry Baron Blanks.”
“Blanks…”
The name sounded distant to her, as if buried deep in forgotten memories.
“So I have been chosen, huh,” she muttered.
“So he is finally going to throw me away. To some broken, pot-bellied, hairless bastard, to be used and abused.”
For a moment, she was silent.
Then she burst into laughter.
“Hahahahaha!”
Her laughter echoed through the room, wild and unhinged. It rang like a death bell, filling the space with despair. Yet if one looked closely, tiny drops of tears slid down her cheeks before disappearing into the grime.
The maids stared at her as if looking at a madwoman.
After a while, her laughter stopped. She slowly stood up.
“You are here to prepare me, right?” she asked calmly.
“Yes,” one maid replied, her voice trembling.
“Then do it,” the woman said, pulling the cloth aside.
She exposed her bare body, covered in scars and marks.
“Since my fate is sealed, why should I resist it?”
