Chapter 295: 295:Wyvern Breakout
“What’s going on?”
Ethan stepped forward and opened the door of the guest room. The moment his eyes landed on the figure inside, his expression softened in recognition.
“Christen…”
“Brother-in-law!” The man quickly stood up from the couch and gave a deep, respectful bow.
Christen was the son of Baron Fenwick, which made him Ethan’s brother-in-law. He was a year or two younger than Ethan and carried a tired look on his face, as if he had rushed here without rest.
Ethan gestured for him to sit and waved his hand toward the servants. “Sit down. Bring some snacks and tea,” he ordered calmly.
Christen sat, but his back remained stiff. He clasped his hands together, unable to hide his urgency.
“Brother-in-law,” he said seriously, “we need your urgent help.”
“Help?” Ethan paused, his brows knitting together. He searched his memory, trying to recall recent events.
Suddenly, Ray’s voice echoed in his mind. Something about a dungeon breakout.
He had heard it, but with Claira’s introduction, the celebrations, and everyone crowding around them, it had slipped from his thoughts.
“Yes,” Christen continued anxiously. “A Wyvern nest has erupted in the Cavier Hills.”
Ethan’s eyes narrowed slightly.
“The Wyverns are running amok and causing massive damage,” Christen said. “Villages are being attacked, and people are injured. We underestimated them. They are far stronger than expected.”
“Wyverns…” Ethan repeated softly.
For a brief second, a strange light flickered in his eyes.
Why wouldn’t it? Wyverns were legendary creatures, often shown as mounts in fantasy stories. Flying beasts ridden by powerful warriors.
Sadly, he had never encountered one before.
“So, Brother-in-law, please help us,” Christen said, his voice lowering. “Our forces alone are not enough.”
Ethan leaned back slightly and crossed his arms. “Of course, I will help,” he replied without hesitation. “But something like this is no small matter. Have you informed the Capital?”
“Yes,” Christen nodded quickly. “We sent reports, but apparently there are dungeon breakouts all across the Kingdom. The Star Knights are stretched thin and busy everywhere.”
“Huh?” Ethan frowned deeply.
“Why are there so many dungeon breakouts all of a sudden?” he muttered.
Dungeon appearances were rare. They did not simply bloom everywhere without reason.
Something felt wrong.
He fell silent for a moment.
’What if this isn’t a natural disaster?’ he thought.
’Am I overthinking?’
’Is something like this even possible?’
Ethan shook his head lightly, pushing those thoughts aside for now.
“Alright,” he said firmly. “Christen, give me a few hours to prepare. Then we will depart.”
“What?!”
The sudden shout came from the doorway.
“Are you going again?” Sophia stood there with her arms crossed, cheeks puffed out in protest.
“It hasn’t even been two days since you returned, and you are leaving again?” she complained, her voice full of frustration.
Ethan looked at her and laughed helplessly.
What could he do?
He walked over and gently placed a hand on her head. “It’s urgent,” he said softly. “I really need to go.”
Sophia turned her face away with a huff, clearly unhappy, but she did not stop him.
Ethan could only smile wryly, knowing that duty rarely waited for happiness.
This time, Diana went along with him, and Sally and Wales tagged along too.
Diana said she wanted real combat experience. Sophia also wanted to go, but Rina had some work to handle, so the responsibility of the estate fell on Ray and Sophia. Ethan had asked Miranda to come as well, but for some reason, she refused without giving an explanation.
Mera and Wales sat over Ethan’s shoulders, holding onto his hair and collar as the carriage moved forward. Their eyes sparkled as they watched the world outside. Every passing tree, every distant hill, and every flying bird fascinated them.
“Look! Look!” Mera pointed excitedly at a herd of animals running across the plains.
“They seem quite strong!” Wales added, clapping his hands with pure joy.
Ethan sighed but smiled helplessly as their tiny hands tugged at him. Sally laughed softly while Diana watched them with a gentle expression. Their innocent voices and carefree laughter made the journey feel warm and light.
Christen, on the other hand, stayed tense the entire time. His brows were tightly furrowed, and his eyes constantly scanned the surroundings. Watching the group, he could not help but wonder if they were heading to deal with a dangerous situation or going on a picnic.
Soon, they reached the designated zone.
As Ethan stepped forward, his expression changed.
The mana in the air felt different.
It was quite thick and heavy.
“This…” Diana muttered, her eyes widening.”Ethan, can you feel it?”
“Yes,” Ethan replied with a somber tone. “I can.”
The mana density here was far higher than usual. At least twice that of the surrounding lands. Even the air felt oppressive, pressing down on their chests.
Not long after, they spotted a group ahead.
Fenwick knights had already formed a blockade. Shields were raised, weapons drawn, and their formation was tight. At the entrance, Baron Fenwick stood quietly, his hands clasped behind his back and his gaze fixed forward.
As Ethan drew closer, two excited shrieks broke the tension.
“Grandpaaa!”
“Grandappa!”
Before Ethan could react, Mera and Wales jumped down from his shoulders.
“Stop! Don’t go!” Ethan exclaimed, his heart jumping.
He knew what kind of man Fenwick usually was.
He was cold, ruthless and calculating. He was genuinely afraid the old man might scare the children or make them cry, and Ethan did not want to imagine what he might do if that happened.
However, what happened next left everyone stunned.
“Ohh… my dear, sweet grandchildren…”
Like a blooming flower in full spring, completely different from the rotten schemer everyone knew, Baron Fenwick bent down and opened his arms wide. He grabbed both children and lifted them up with ease.
SWOOOOSH!
For a moment, no one even breathed.
Christen stood frozen, his mouth slightly open. The surrounding knights stared in disbelief, some even rubbing their eyes.
’Who is this person?’
’That can’t be our Lord, right?’
Ethan swallowed hard, wondering if he was dreaming.
“Hey,” Ethan said cautiously, “this isn’t some act to kidnap my kids and blackmail me later, right?”
Diana shot him a bitter smile. “He won’t fall that low.”
“Are you sure?” Ethan asked seriously.
“…,” Diana was tongue-tied.
“You know,” Fenwick said calmly without turning around, “I can hear you.”
“COUGH!”
Fenwick gently put the children down and patted their heads.
“Kids, I will play with you later,” he said softly.
“Yes, Grandpa! We will wait for you!” Mera and Wales replied brightly as they ran back to grab Diana’s hands.
Fenwick turned toward Ethan and nodded. “Do you want to take a look now, or do you want to rest first?”
“No,” Ethan replied firmly. “Let’s move now. The faster we assess the situation, the sooner we can act before things get dangerous.”
“Hm,” Fenwick nodded.
Without further delay, the group moved forward.
