Chapter 297: 297:The Wyverns Nest
The caged wyverns thrashed and growled as the soldiers secured them. Their wings scraped against the metal bars, and their sharp claws dug into the earth as they snarled in defiance. Hot breath escaped their jaws, and their eyes burned with wild hostility.
The moment Ethan looked at them, everything changed.
His gaze was calm but heavy, like an unseen weight pressing down. The wyverns froze. Their growls weakened into low whimpers, and one by one they lowered their heads, retreating to the corners of the cages. Even their tails stopped lashing, as if instinct itself warned them not to provoke him.
Baron Fenwick watched the scene in stunned silence.
“This is the first time I am looking at these marvelous beasts up close,” he said slowly.
“Indeed,” one of the knights murmured. “They are just as marvelous as the tales say.”
Ethan did not reply. He walked around the cages, observing the wyverns carefully. Their scales were thick and layered, their wings powerful, and their bodies built for war and dominance. These were not mindless monsters rather they were living weapons shaped by nature itself.
While Ethan examined them, he quietly gestured to a few members of the Black Thorns. These men melted into the surroundings, hiding their presence completely, and moved deeper into the affected area.
Minutes passed.
When the Black Thorns returned, their faces were pale, and their breathing was uneven.
Ethan noticed immediately.
“What happened?” he asked.
“Why do you look so pale?” he added, his tone calm but sharp.
“My Lord… it’s troublesome,” one of them said, swallowing hard.
“There is a huge upland in the middle of the region,” another continued. “On top of it, there seems to be a massive figure resting. Around it, many wyverns are circling, as if they are protecting it.”
Ethan’s expression stiffened. He slowly turned to Baron Fenwick.
“I think we should take a look alone first,” Ethan said.
Fenwick nodded without hesitation. “Hmm.”
Led by the Black Thorns, they moved deeper into the land, carefully avoiding detection. The air grew heavier with every step, and the mana in the surroundings became increasingly violent.
Then they saw it.
“What the fuck…” Ethan cursed under his breath, his voice filled with raw disbelief.
Before them stretched a cracked and parched land, completely lifeless. The ground was split open in countless places, and at the very center stood a towering, jagged structure that looked like a mountain born from chaos. It was sharp, uneven, and unnatural, as if the earth itself had been torn apart and reshaped.
At the top of that structure stood a massive figure, shrouded in thick mist. Its outline was unclear, yet its presence alone was overwhelming. From afar, countless blurry shapes could be seen circling it in the sky.
Wyverns.
Streams of lava seeped out from the cracks around the structure, flowing slowly like molten blood.
“Hiss…” Ethan sucked in a cold breath and turned toward Fenwick.
“This looks like a piece of hell descended onto the continent,” he said grimly.
Fenwick nodded, his face tight. “More than that, what is that huge thing?”
Ethan stared at the mist-shrouded figure. He wondered the same.
“Since the wyverns are circling around it,” Ethan said slowly, “it might be their lord.”
“The Wyvern King,” Fenwick muttered.
Ethan glanced at him. “You know the legends?”
Fenwick nodded. “The Wyvern King is said to be the progenitor of all wyverns. A tyrant of the skies. In ancient times, when it awakened, entire regions were reduced to ash. Armies fell before it might, and even high-ranking mages and warriors failed to bring it down.”
“But it might not be very Wyvern in the tale.”
“Of course it isn’t..I am just narrating the events.”Baron Fenwick spoke sombrely.
Ethan then frowned. “I don’t understand.”
“How did they appear out of nowhere?” he continued. “Wyverns are natural creatures. They don’t come from dungeons.”
Fenwick shook his head. “Who knows. There might be a wyvern nest hidden deep underground that surfaced because of something. Or that thing awakened and called them.”
Ethan clicked his tongue.
“Whatever the case, we need to prepare,” he said firmly. “I severely underestimated this situation.”
He looked back at the distant figure, his eyes narrowing.”If that thing runs amok, I alone can’t do shit,” Ethan admitted.
He could kill and could slaughter many enemies. But this was different. This was an army of wyverns protecting something far more dangerous and if he disturbed the nest, and Wyvern started running away here and there,he couldn’t chase after them.
More than that, he did not want to kill them.
Each wyvern was a valuable existence. If controlled or tamed, they could become a decisive force. Killing them blindly would be nothing but a waste.
“This is no longer a simple outbreak,” Ethan said quietly.
The land itself seemed to agree, trembling faintly beneath their feet.
Ethan was not some all-knowing sage who understood every hidden truth of the world. He could sense danger, and he could feel shifts in power, but this situation went beyond his experience. He did not know how such a massive force could remain hidden for so long and then suddenly appear.
Was there an external hand guiding this?
He did not know.
“That creature…” Baron Fenwick asked cautiously, his voice low. “What about its rank?”
Ethan frowned and slowly closed his eyes. His senses stretched outward, brushing against the violent mana in the distance.
“It’s around early B-rank,” Ethan said after a moment. “But it’s unstable. The aura keeps fluctuating, and I can feel that it is feeding on something. Whatever it is absorbing, it’s growing stronger by the moment.”
Baron Fenwick’s expression darkened. “Then what should we do now?” he asked helplessly.
“We need reinforcements,” Ethan replied firmly. “And we need to prepare for the worst possible outcome. This is no longer just a local threat.”
He turned toward the knights behind them. “First, evacuate the nearby villages immediately. Move everyone as far as possible. Send messages to all surrounding territories and request urgent support.”
The weight of the situation pressed heavily on everyone present.
