Chapter 300: 300:The Wyvern Attack
Soldiers began to gather one after another, their armor clinking as they formed ranks. Horses stamped the ground, banners fluttered, and the low murmur of voices filled the camp. The air became heavy, tense, and filled with anticipation.
Ethan stood at the center and watched the group come together. Seeing the familiar faces, he let out a small smile.
The moment Randall appeared, he jumped down from his horse without hesitation. He strode forward and placed both hands firmly on Ethan’s shoulders, his eyes burning with excitement.
“Tell me, my Lord,” Randall said eagerly.
“Whom do we need to kill? Which evil group is causing a mess this time?”
“???”
Ethan stared at Randall.
Randall stiffened immediately and slowly pulled his hands back. “Sorry,” he muttered. “I just got carried away by my emotions.”
Joel scratched his head and frowned. “Wait. There is no evil group here?”
Ethan sighed and facepalmed. “No. There is no evil group this time.”
Seeing their confused expressions, Ethan briefly explained the situation again.Wyverns, their nest, and the Wyvern King.
“I see,” Randall said, nodding slowly. His excitement faded into seriousness.
A day later, the camp was shaken again.
Duke Phillips arrived with his knights, riding hard and fast. The moment he entered the camp, he jumped down from his horse and shouted in disbelief.
“You guys are not joking, right?”
“Of course not,” Ethan replied calmly. “Why would we joke about this?”
Duke Phillips ran a hand through his hair, his face pale. “Have you sent a message to the capital?”
“I did,” Baron Fenwick replied, clicking his tongue. “The response was lukewarm at best.”
Duke Phillips slowly turned and looked at Ethan as if he were staring at the cause of all disasters.
Ethan raised his hands in surrender. “Wait. What did I do?”
“You did nothing,” Duke Phillips said grimly. “The King did not send help because he knew you were here to handle it.”
Ethan paused. For a moment, he wanted to curse loudly. In the end, he swallowed it down and let out a tired sigh.
The leaders gathered and began to discuss.
After listening quietly, Duke Phillips finally spoke. “Sorry to say this, Ethan, but a hostile force of this scale cannot be handled without killing.”
“We cannot capture wyverns alive in the middle of a full battle without consequences,” he continued.
Ethan nodded slowly. He already knew that.
There was another way. Wales.
If Wales could communicate with them, things might change. But the thought barely crossed his mind before Baron Fenwick spoke sharply.
“Do not even think about putting Wales there,” Fenwick said coldly. “If you do, I will never forgive you.”
Ethan looked at him and shook his head. “Do you think I would put my child’s life on the line for uncertain rewards?”
Duke Phillips nodded firmly. “He is still a child. This is not a risk we can take.”
Silence followed.
Finally, Fenwick spoke again. “Of all the situations, the only way to end this is to take down the Wyvern King.”
Duke Phillips turned to Ethan. “Can you do it?”
Ethan did not hesitate. “I have to.”
The decision was made.
Orders spread through the camp like wildfire.
Knights moved first, forming the core. Heavy infantry followed, shields raised and weapons ready. Archers took positions along the flanks, while mages gathered at the rear, chanting softly as they prepared their spells.
The formation stretched wide, covering the hills and valleys. The ground trembled as hundreds of soldiers marched forward in unison.
The march toward the wyvern nest began.
Dust rose with every step. The sound of armor, boots, and weapons blended into a steady, oppressive rhythm. As the army advanced, the surrounding mana began to stir.
High above, the wyverns started to notice.
One by one, shadows moved across the sky. Sharp shrieks echoed as the wyverns lifted their heads and spread their wings. The air vibrated with their cries.
The circling beasts broke formation and surged forward.
From the hills, from the cracked land, and from the skies above, wyverns began to descend toward the army like a living storm.
“Formation!” a knight shouted.
Shields slammed together. Spears tilted upward. Mages raised their staff as mana flared around them.
The ground shook as the first wave approached.
Ethan stood at the front, his gaze fixed ahead. His expression was calm, but his eyes were sharp and cold.
This looked more like a war between two hostile forces then a hunt
The first shriek tore through the sky like a blade. Before anyone could breathe, the wyverns dove.
The vanguard felt it first.
Wind howled as massive shadows fell from above, wings beating hard enough to shake the earth. The lead wyvern slammed into the shield wall, claws screeching against metal. Sparks burst as talons scraped shields, and several soldiers were pushed back despite their footing.
BOOOOOOM!BOOM!
Joel was the first to react.
“Hold the line!” Joel roared, his voice sharp and steady as he stepped forward.
He raised his blade and brought it down hard. A surge of aura spread through the front ranks, strengthening shields and steadying trembling arms.
The first wyvern snapped at him and roared with jaws wide, but Joel slashed upward and cut into its wing joint. The beast screamed and crashed into the ground, shaking the earth as it thrashed.
A wyvern opened its jaws and released a stream of fire that washed over the front ranks. Shields glowed red, armor sizzled, and men screamed as heat clawed at their skin. Mages reacted instantly. Water barriers rose, crashing into the fire and filling the air with boiling steam that blinded both sides.
This was just the first wave.
Wyvern flew swiftly, testing the defenses. They snapped at shields, struck with their tails, and retreated before the spears could find their hearts.
They decided to probe.
Randall narrowed his eyes as he parried another strike.
“These bastards are smart,” he muttered.
What followed was the second wave of attack.
