Chapter 375:The Secret Protectors
A small carriage rolled slowly along the dirt road under the cold night sky. The wheels creaked, and the lantern hanging at the side swayed with each bump. Inside, a girl lay curled up in the corner, her body pressed tight as if trying to take up less space. Outside, two men walked beside the carriage with lazy steps. Their armor straps hung loose, and both of them were yawning again and again.
“Our task is just to drop her there and leave right..” one of them asked, scratching his neck.
“Yes!”
“Just drop her and leave. That’s what we were paid for..”
The other man stretched his arms and rolled his shoulders.
“The lady inside looks beautiful. Should we tease her.”
“I don’t think there would be consequences. After all she was thrown a piece of garbage from Halcrest.”
“Shut up idiots. Don’t you know whom she belongs to.”
“Do you want to die…”
Their voices lowered after that, but their eyes still drifted toward the carriage from time to time.
Inside, the woman sat hugging her knees. Her back rested against the wooden wall, and the cold from outside seeped through the thin boards. Her clothes were simple and worn, and her hair fell messily over her face. She did not look up even once.
She didn’t sit there helplessly. If one noticed carefully, hidden in her sleeves was a sharp knife that was meant to stab and kill. Her fingers rested near it, and they did not shake.
‘I can’t drop my guard.’
‘What if they really dared to act..’
Mira gritted her teeth. Her jaw tightened, and her nails dug into her arm. Brutal rage burned in her chest as memories forced their way back.
Halcrest.
One of the most significant houses of Arcadia Empire.
Unlike others, there wasn’t just a noble system. There were even large families and clans that held long standing power. Their name carried weight, and people bowed when they passed.
Halcrest were known for their ability to heal. Their arts were greatly respected and revered. Injured soldiers, nobles, and even officials begged for their help.
However..
She… She was just a nuisance.
Born of low birth from the womb of a prostitute, she didn’t inherit the mantle, and for that they were scorned. Servants whispered when she passed and adults looked away as if she carried dirt.
Her mother endured it for years.
Insults and spits behind the closed doors.
Until one day her mother couldn’t take it any more and committed suicide.
Mira’s breathing turned heavy. Her chest rose and fell fast, but her eyes stayed dry. There were no tears left in her.
After Arcadia conquered Ruthiana and many families started to look for Sir Ethan, Mira decided to step forward for marriage.
She did not do it for love. She did not dream of kindness. She wanted to escape this hellish hole no matter what.
Her fingers slowly tightened around the hidden knife. The cold metal felt steady and real.
“Once out… I need to do everything to make sure that I have a better life even if I to sacrifice my body and soul.”
Her thoughts were quiet but firm. There was no hesitation in them. Something inside her had already broken long ago.
InMira slowly lifted her head. Her face was pale, and her eyes were dark and empty. They did not look like the eyes of a normal girl anymore. They looked like someone who had already walked through hell and did not fear blood.
She hugged her knees tighter, and the knife stayed hidden waiting to be of used.
The deep chilling resoluteness suddenly caused a chill that spread outward. It was not wind, but the air around the carriage felt colder.
One of the men guarding outside rubbed his arms and shifted his weight from one foot to the other. The night air felt heavier than usual and a strange cold clung to his skin.
“Damn.. Did you feel a bit chill?”
The other guard glanced around into the darkness beyond the estate walls. The trees stood still and there was no strong wind.
“Chill.. I don’t know.. Maybe because of the night wind..”
For a brief moment they both stayed quiet. The silence around them felt unnatural. Then they forced a laugh as if to push away their uneasiness.
“Hey..Let’s drop the act and get inside.”
The second guard frowned and shook his head.
“No..We can’t do that..”
The first man leaned closer and lowered his voice. His eyes gleamed with a different intent.
“What if we just rub a bit..I mean…We won’t do anything nefarious..”
Hearing this, the other person hesitated. His jaw tightened and he swallowed. But when he thought about the maiden inside, his blood rushed up and his breathing grew heavier.
“Then lets go.”
“Go-”
The word froze in his throat. The voice that responded did not sound like his companion. It was colder and deeper. He slowly turned around and his eyes widened in horror. The man beside him stood stiff, and his head had snapped around at an unnatural angle.
“Ah-”
His scream died down as a hand shoved into his mouth, stopping the sound. The grip was firm and merciless. He looked up in terror at the knight who stared at him furiously. The knight’s armor glinted faintly under the moonlight and his eyes burned with anger.
“You dared to have thoughts of harming the lady..Did you really think you can trample on the Lord authority as you wish.”
The next moment, a sharp slash cut through his neck and sent him down to the netherland. Blood splattered onto the ground and his body collapsed without another sound. The knight wiped the sword clean with a cloth and spat on the ground in disgust.
“Properly escort the mistress..”
Just then a scream erupted from the entrance.
“Who are you?”
The scream shook them and as they turned around they saw Miranda coming out while gripping a dagger tightly in her trembling hand. Her eyes were filled with fear yet also determination.
“If you dare to do anything I am gonna fight you.At the very least I will commit suicide.”
Seeing this, the knight immediately lowered his sword and raised his empty hand to show no harm.
“Calm down my lady…we are from Order of Eternal Blades..We here to escort you safely to Blanks.”
“We can swear it.”
“Yess..”
The other knight shouted and bowed deeply to show respect.
She looked at them carefully. Her grip on the dagger did not loosen. After a brief moment, she nodded.
“Okay.”
Though she said this, Mira still maintained her vigilance and kept the dagger close to her chest. Thankfully nothing she feared happened and she was escorted safely to the Blanks estate.
On the journey she learned that she was not alone. Lord Blanks had sent knights to all those who were chosen. From the moment they came out from the estate, the knights had kept an eye on them. The reason they acted now was because this group of rabid dogs tried to cross the line and overstep their limits.
Thankfully Mira’s worry lessened as she finally entered Blanks safely and soundly.
