Chapter 376:The New Wives
Elara, Mira, Selene, and Lyra stood in a line with their hands folded, heads lowered. Their thin sleeves trembled slightly, whether from fear or cold, even though they did not know.
They stood before Ethan, who sat in a large carved chair, one leg crossed over the other, quietly studying them one by one.
They were all beautiful in different ways. Graceful posture, clear skin, careful grooming that could not hide the hardship in their eyes. Any one of them could stand at the peak of modeling. Though they could not compare to Rina in pure beauty, they were still striking enough to turn heads anywhere.
The room was silent. Even the servants outside did not dare to breathe loudly.
Ethan leaned back slightly, the chair creaking under his weight.
“Do you know why you are here?”
The question fell like a stone into still water.
Their shoulders stiffened. Elara’s fingers tightened over each other. Lyra bit her lower lip. Selene’s eyelashes trembled as all four lowered their heads further.
All except one.
Mira lifted her chin and looked straight at him. Her gaze held no admiration, no fear, only anger that had been pressed down for too long.
“We are here because our families sold us.”
Her voice did not shake.
Ethan blinked, surprised by her bluntness. There was fire in her eyes, bright and stubborn.
Inside, he muttered, Hm… I already like her.
He folded his arms, hiding the faint curve at the corner of his lips.”Do you know what your duty is?”
No one answered. The silence stretched.
Ethan raised his voice.
“What? Are you all mute or what?”
Mira gave a cold laugh, short and sharp.
“What else could it be except to serve our dear Master?”
She glanced sideways at the others, her eyes flashing.
“Why are you acting so meek? We are already sold. What worse can happen now?”
Elara spoke softly, almost pleading.
“Sister, calm down. At least we have enough food and clothes here.”
Lyra nodded quickly, her voice small.
“Yes. Also, we don’t have to suffer like at home.”
Selene added with a nervous smile that did not reach her eyes. “It’s better to be sold to a Lord than to some old pot-bellied man.”
Mira snorted loudly.
“Ridiculous. Don’t justify this by comparing it to something worse.”
Her voice shook now, not from fear but from bottled-up pain.
“Do you think our life will be good here? We are nothing but breeding pigs. Bitches to be kicked around. And—”
She kept going, words sharp and ugly, tearing through the air. Even the guards at the door shifted uneasily.
Finally, Ethan stood up abruptly.
“Hey. Hey. Lady. What is this grave misunderstanding?”
He puffed out his chest in an exaggerated way.
“Haven’t you heard of my noble and upright reputation?”
Mira’s lips curled.
“Noble? Huh. Many people have noble reputations while secretly doing wicked things. And with such a pretty face, I wonder what kind of strange fetish you have.”
She looked around the room, eyes narrowing in thought.
“Wait. Do you have some kind of fetish for marrying girls like us?”
“…”
“Shut up!” Ethan snapped, his face darkening.
His shout made all four flinch. Even Mira’s shoulders jerked.
“Can you stop this?” he said, voice firm now, no longer joking.
“The reason you were chosen is because I don’t want ruthless, ambitious people entering my house and disturbing the peace.”
He looked at each of them slowly, making sure they felt the weight of his words.
“You are not bound here. You can do what you want. You are free here. You can cultivate. You can study. You can enjoy your hobbies as long as you don’t harm others.”
Their heads lifted in shock. Even Mira’s anger paused.
“If you don’t want to become my wife, I can even arrange a disguise and let you leave. But before that, I ask for one month.”
“One month?” Lyra whispered, as if afraid to believe it.
“Yes. Stay in the Blank Estate for one month and see if you like it.”
He spread his hands openly.
“If after one month you still want to leave, I won’t stop you.”
Selene’s eyes lit up, tears gathering at the corners.
“For real?”
Her voice trembled with hope she did not dare show before. Since childhood, she had dreamed of freedom. Before coming here, she had secretly prayed this Lord would be different.
Ethan smiled at her and nodded.
“Yes. You are free.”
“And during your stay, you aren’t restricted. Please enjoy.”
The four women looked at one another. The tightness in their shoulders slowly eased. Relief spread across their faces like sunlight after rain.
Elara bowed deeply. “Thank you, my Lord.”
Lyra followed, voice soft. “We are grateful.”
Selene bowed with shining eyes. “I will remember this kindness.”
Mira stayed still for a moment. Then, stiffly, she lowered her head just a little.
“…Thank you.”
Ethan waved his hand, already looking tired.
“You can go.”
They turned and walked out together, whispering quietly, their steps lighter than before.
Ethan let out a long breath and rubbed his forehead.
“Huh… Such troublesome things.”
He shook his head, though a faint smile tugged at his lips.
“Women are always difficult to deal with.”Ethan sucked in a cold breath as he looked at the reports.
….
Ethan was about to return to the stack of reports on his desk when his eyes paused.
Someone was standing at the entrance.
He frowned.
“Huh… What happened?” Ethan asked, looking at Mira, who stood still with a blank expression.
She did not answer at once. Her eyes moved around the room as if checking something. Then she turned, walked back, and quietly closed the door. The soft click of the lock sounded loud in the silent room.
Ethan’s frown deepened. The scene felt familiar, but he could not tell what she wanted.
Mira walked forward slowly until she stood right in front of his desk.
“Sir Ethan… How much do you know about Halcrest?”
Ethan leaned back slightly and thought for a moment.
“I know what others know.”
“You certainly know a bit more, right?” Mira said, a bitter smile tugging at her lips.
Ethan’s eyes curved faintly. “Will you believe me if I deny it?”
Mira gave a quiet breath through her nose. “Your expression confirms it. You also know that I am just garbage Halcrest got rid of by sending me here, yet you accepted me.”
Her fingers lifted and brushed lightly over her lips, as if steadying herself.
“Let me think,” she continued, her voice low. “You are either after my body, or you do not want a troublesome woman in your harem, right?”
Ethan did not answer immediately. He simply watched her.
“You seem to know the situation quite well,” he said at last.
“Yes,” Mira replied. “And I can also serve as a sensible dear wife, and even your toy that you can vent on when you are displeased.” As she spoke, she stepped closer and then slowly knelt down in front of him.
Ethan’s gaze sharpened.
“Your actions are quite different from the act you showed before.”
Mira looked up at him. “It is because I wanted to see how you react. If you reacted violently when I provoked you, as if I scratched your petty ego, then that would mean you are prideful and arrogant and cannot handle a little woman’s words.”
Ethan chuckled softly. He reached out and lifted her chin gently with his fingers.
“I see. So now what do you want, my new wife?”
Mira’s expression changed at once.
This was the moment she had been waiting for. Her throat moved as she swallowed.
With a trace of solemnity in her eyes, she spoke.
“A good life… I want to live in peace.”
Her voice trembled slightly, but she did not look away.
“For that, I am willing to offer my body and soul. I know how many fetishes men carry. I am willing to fulfill them all, but in return, I want to live without anyone stepping over me. And if possible… I want to take revenge against Halcrest.”
Her fingers clenched lightly on her clothes.
Ethan looked at her quietly, his expression unreadable.
“Now that is a lot to process…” he said at last, with a calm yet heavy voice.
