Chapter 393:Peace At The Edge Of Chaos
In this world, people marry early. Engagements were decided before coming of age, and once they grew up, they married and had children. It was normal here, but fear was still fear.
For a while, father and son walked side by side in silence. Only the sound of their steps on the stone path could be heard.
At last, Ethan stopped and turned around to face Herion.
“Herion, I will not force you or impose any decision because it is your life and your choice,” he said slowly.
Herion looked up, surprised by the calm tone.
“Remember, choices have consequences, so choose wisely,” Ethan continued. “But I can only advise you one thing.”
He held Herion’s shoulder firmly.
“For you, they might only be a single chapter in the book of life, but for them, you might be their entire book. So think carefully before deciding.”
After saying that, Ethan turned around and walked away, leaving Herion standing there with a stiff and shocked expression.
Herion did not move for a moment. The words echoed in his head again and again.
He slowly lifted his face and looked up at the sky. The sun’s gentle rays fell on him, and a soft breeze brushed his hair.
“To me they might just be a part, but for them I might be their entire life,” he muttered under his breath.
A small smile appeared on his lips.
“I did not know my dad had such profound knowledge,” he said quietly.
Meanwhile, little did he know that his old man had plagiarized and copy pasted that line from somewhere else, and that was exactly why Ethan had walked away so fast. He was afraid Herion might start asking where he learned to talk like that.
For the past few days, Herion kept coming to the garden whenever he had free time.
The garden path was quiet and calm. The afternoon sun filtered through the leaves, and soft light moved slowly across the ground. A few birds fluttered between branches, and a gentle breeze carried the scent of flowers. It was peaceful, yet his mind was anything but calm.
His thoughts were still stuck on his father’s words.
For you, they might only be a single chapter, but for them, you might be their entire book.
He let out a slow breath and rubbed his face with both hands. His fingers dragged down his cheeks as if he could wipe away the weight in his chest.
“Damn,” he muttered softly. “Why does he always say things that get stuck in my head?”
He was not used to thinking this deeply. Fighting, training, handling missions, and moving around with the Black Thorns were easier. Those things had clear enemies and clear goals. You either won or lost.
But this was different. This was about people, feelings, and responsibility.
He glanced back toward the mansion buildings where the women were staying. They had walked behind him quietly earlier. They did not talk much and did not cause trouble. They just followed, as if they had already decided their place without asking anything.
That memory made his chest feel tight.
“I did not even ask them what they want,” he murmured.
He had been busy acting strong and confident, as if he could handle everything. But in truth, he had just brought them here without fully understanding their hearts.
He kicked a small stone on the path and watched it roll away.
“I am not scared of fighting monsters,” he said under his breath. “But this is scary.”
After going back and forth in his thoughts for days, Herion finally made a decision. He would accept them and try to take responsibility properly.
Inside the mansion, Ethan was sitting with Rathlos in a study room. Papers were spread across the table, and a few candles burned quietly beside them. They were doing calculations and reviewing reports about land, resources, and city development.
A servant entered and delivered the message.
Herion had made his decision.
Ethan paused and leaned back in his chair. A faint smile appeared on his face, and his shoulders relaxed a little.
“That’s my boy,” he said softly. “He really made a good choice.”
Rathlos clapped his hands lightly. “Congratulations, my Lord, for gaining daughters in law.”
Ethan was about to respond when Rathlos’s expression turned serious. He lowered his hands and spoke in a more thoughtful tone.
“However, I think it is too early to celebrate. We need to decide something important.”
The words struck Ethan’s heart.
“Yeah,” Ethan said slowly. “He has grown. No, everyone has grown. They will need a proper place.”
He looked down at the table and tapped his fingers lightly.
“Soon they will have families of their own. They cannot all stay in the main mansion forever.”
Rathlos nodded. “Then it is time to move the plan forward.”
“The cities are already ready, right?” Ethan asked.
“Yes,” Rathlos replied. “The construction of the main districts is complete. Housing, markets, and training grounds are all prepared.”
Ethan felt a wave of nostalgia. Those cities were first planned with Ray in mind. He had imagined Ray managing one of them, learning responsibility step by step.
But Ray had been gone for more than one and a half years now.
“He seems fine,” Ethan muttered, staring at the papers. “But he does not send letters.”
For a moment, the room felt heavier.
Rathlos remained silent, knowing Ethan was worried.
Ethan’s thoughts drifted toward the Frontier. The situation there was getting worse day by day. Reports spoke of endless battles and retreating lines. The kingdom should have fallen already, but a mysterious Legendary Realm Knight had appeared and was helping them hold on.
“That knight is buying them time,” Ethan said quietly. “But God knows how long it can last.”
He stood up and walked toward the window. He looked out at the sky where the clouds moved slowly.
“Once Frontier falls, this peaceful time will end again,” he said. “Everything will turn chaotic. What a farce.”
Rathlos watched him silently. He knew this calm was only the quiet before another storm.
And Ethan knew it too.
