Chapter 463:The Backwater Marquise
The letter was simple and straightforward, just like him.
Ethan had written honestly about the conversation with her father and about the marriage proposal. There were no fancy decorations in the writing, and he did not try to hide his thoughts behind complicated phrases. The words were clear and direct, just like the man who had written them.
Amber slowly read the lines again while standing beside the window.
Her fingers tightened slightly around the edge of the paper as her eyes moved across the last lines.
“The mountain does not love the sky any less for the valleys that came before. My heart has many peaks, but I am asking you to be the summit where I finally rest. Will you walk this path as my wife?”
For a long moment she remained silent.
The quiet room was filled only with the faint sound of wind brushing against the castle walls outside.
Then she sighed softly.
“That idiot…”
Her cheeks slowly turned red without her even noticing.
Amber leaned lightly against the window frame while looking outside at the dark courtyard of the castle.
The sounds of celebration that had filled Frostvele earlier had finally faded away. Most of the soldiers were already asleep after drinking through the night.
Only a few torches still burned quietly along the walls.Amber lowered the letter slowly and looked toward the moon hanging above Frostvele.
Her thoughts felt strangely tangled.
Her father had clearly pushed the idea of marriage very suddenly. But Ethan had not tried to pressure her.
He had simply written the truth and left the decision entirely in her hands.
Amber looked down at the letter again.
Her lips slowly curved into a small and complicated smile.
“Hmmm…”
Feeling a quiet warmth in her chest, she walked slowly toward the small wooden table near the window.
A bottle of ink and a fresh quill had already been placed there earlier by one of the servants.
Amber picked up the quill gently.
She dipped the feather into the ink, paused for a moment while thinking, and then began writing on the back of Ethan’s letter.
Her handwriting was smooth and elegant as the words slowly appeared on the parchment.
“An ancient forest does not fear the rings of years already passed. It only grows deeper in the earth. If there is room for my roots beside the ones you already tend, then I want them to grow near yours.
A forest is not less for its many trees, and a river does not fear the stones it has already passed. If your heart has room for one more horizon, then yes, I am willing to marry you.”
After writing the final word, Amber slowly placed the quill back into the ink holder.
She looked at the letter again.
A faint smile appeared on her face.
The moonlight illuminated her soft expression as she quietly folded the letter and sealed it again.
…..
The next morning inside Frostvele Castle, Ethan stood inside one of the command rooms.
Sunlight was entering through the large windows while a few documents were scattered across the table.
A messenger had delivered the reply only a few minutes earlier.
Ethan opened the letter and began reading it.
At first his expression remained calm.
But when he reached the final lines, his eyebrows slowly lifted.
“Damn… this lady…” he muttered under his breath.
Julia, who had been standing nearby organizing several reports, looked up immediately.
“What happened?” she asked curiously.
Ethan did not answer directly.
Instead he simply extended the letter toward her.
Julia stepped closer and took the parchment from his hand.
Her eyes moved across the elegant handwriting. As she finished reading, a subtle smile appeared on her lips.
“I didn’t know she had such poetic talent,” Julia said while handing the letter back.
Ethan leaned against the table and crossed his arms.
“She is well learned,” he replied calmly.
Julia looked at him again with a curious expression.
“So now?” she asked.
Ethan blinked once.
“Now what?”
Julia raised an eyebrow.
“You know exactly what I mean.”
Ethan looked down at the letter again.
Then a wide grin slowly appeared on his face.
“Of course it’s marriage time,” Ethan said while letting out a short laugh.
Julia shook her head slightly, but a faint smile remained on her face.
Outside the window, the fortress of Frostvele had already begun another busy day, completely unaware that another major change in Ethan’s life had just been decided..
……
A month later…
News of the wedding did not remain hidden for long.
Messengers left the fortress early the next morning carrying official letters sealed with the crest of Marquise Ethan. Within a few days the news spread across nearby territories and slowly reached the noble circles of the Arcadia Empire.
Amber, the daughter of Duke Lancelot, would be married to Ethan of Ruthiana.
The announcement caused a noticeable stir among many noble houses.
Inside a luxurious estate in the western district of Arcadia City, several young nobles had gathered for their usual evening gathering.
Crystal glasses filled with red wine rested on a polished marble table, and soft music played quietly from a nearby room. Servants stood silently near the walls while waiting for orders.
The relaxed atmosphere suddenly changed.
One of the young men slammed a folded letter onto the table.
“What the hell is this?” he snapped loudly.
The sudden outburst made the others look toward him with confusion.
Another noble leaned forward and picked up the letter.
His eyes quickly moved across the written lines.
Then his expression froze.
“…This has to be a joke.”
“It’s not,” the first man replied with clear irritation.
That announcement came from Duke Lancelot himself.”
A tense silence spread across the room.
One of the nobles suddenly let out a sharp laugh.
“Amber is going to marry him?”
“Marry that frontier war dog?”
“Cough..He is from Ruthiana.”someone corrected.
“Fuck off.”he snorted.
Another man clenched his jaw tightly.
“That backwater Marquise?”
