Chapter 469:These Old Foggies..
“Haha…of course not.”
“Not at all, not at all, Lord Ethan.”
“Who is in his right mind would cause you such trouble on such an important day.”
“Lord Ethan’s actions just now really opened our eyes.”
Having just witnessed Ethan’s terrifying strength, everyone naturally made sure to give him proper respect. Many nobles quickly stepped forward with polite smiles while praising him openly.
Some raised their wine cups while speaking loudly so others could hear.
“Marquise Ethan’s strength is truly remarkable.”
“Those young men were simply asking for trouble.”
“For someone to challenge a hero of the frontier like that was foolish.”
For a while the atmosphere became lively again. Conversations restarted, servants poured wine, and soldiers laughed loudly while recounting what they had just seen.
Meanwhile, the three young nobles who had attempted to cause trouble had already become background characters.
No one paid attention to them anymore.
Their earlier arrogance had completely vanished. They stood on the side of the courtyard with pale faces and lowered heads while several guards watched them carefully.
Many guests simply ignored them.
If Ethan had not ordered his subordinates to escort them away quietly, some people even believed that the angry soldiers present might have dragged them out themselves.
After the unwelcome guests were taken away, the ceremony continued smoothly.
The priest stepped forward again and opened the ceremonial book while clearing his throat.
He spoke clearly so everyone could hear.
“Do you, Ethan, accept Amber as your wife and vow to stand beside her through prosperity and hardship?”
Ethan looked at Amber calmly.
Then he answered without hesitation.
“I do.”
The priest nodded and turned toward Amber.
“Do you, Amber, accept Ethan as your husband and vow to walk beside him through the trials and victories ahead?”
Amber looked at Ethan again for a brief moment.
Her eyes softened slightly.
Then she nodded gently.
“I do.”
The priest lifted his staff slightly and spoke in a firm voice.
“Then by the blessing of the temple and the authority of the Empire, you are now husband and wife.”
For a brief moment the courtyard remained quiet.
Then the soldiers erupted into loud cheers.
“LONG LIVE MARQUISE ETHAN!”
“LONG LIVE LADY AMBER!”
Mugs were raised high into the air.
Laughter and cheering filled the courtyard while the musicians began playing lively music.
Amber looked slightly embarrassed by the sudden noise while Ethan let out a small laugh beside her.
Not far away, Duke Lancelot watched the scene and quietly sighed in relief.
‘Thank God…’
‘Finally that troublesome kid will be gone.’
‘Kekek… now I don’t have to clean up her mess anymore.’
Under the witness of many imperial nobles, Ethan and Amber officially became husband and wife.
The wedding celebration lasted for the entire day.
Food and wine were served endlessly while soldiers and nobles mingled together. Stories from the battlefield were shared, and the entire estate remained lively until late evening.
Eventually the last guests began leaving.
Carriages rolled away from the estate while servants cleaned the courtyard.
When the celebration finally ended and the estate became quiet again, Ethan walked toward Amber’s chamber with an expectant mood.
He pushed the door open slowly and stepped inside.
The candlelight inside the room glowed softly while the night outside had grown calm.
A few minutes later, the quiet room was filled with soft and lively sounds as the newly married couple began their first night together.
…..
Meanwhile, far away from the estate, the three defeated nobles traveled back along the road with miserable expressions.
Their clothes were still stained with dust and dried blood.
No one spoke for a long time.
Finally Hamel broke the silence.
“Now what are we going to do?” he asked bitterly.
Pentos let out a tired sigh while rubbing his forehead.
“With what face are we going to return?”
Garet clenched his fists while staring ahead through the carriage window.
“We have been made into a joke.”
None of them spoke again after that.
The humiliation of that day hung heavily in the air while the carriage continued moving through the dark road.
The road outside the Duke’s estate had already grown quiet.
The celebration inside the manor was still faintly visible from a distance. Lantern lights flickered along the walls, and distant laughter could still be heard from the remaining soldiers who continued drinking and celebrating.
But far away from that joyful atmosphere, a dark carriage moved slowly along the cold road.
Inside the carriage, the mood was completely different.
Garet, Hamel, and Pentos sat in silence.
The earlier arrogance on their faces had completely disappeared. Their clothes were still dusty from the battle, and faint stains of dried blood could be seen on their sleeves.
None of them looked at each other.
The humiliation from earlier still weighed heavily on their minds.
Finally Hamel slammed his fist lightly against the side of the carriage.
“Damn it…” he muttered.
Garet stared outside the window with a cold expression.
“We underestimated him,” he said quietly.
His voice carried bitterness.
Pentos remained silent while leaning back against the seat. His eyes were half closed as if he was thinking deeply.
After several minutes, the carriage reached a crossroads outside the province.
Pentos suddenly spoke.
“I have something to take care of.”
Garet glanced at him briefly but did not ask questions.
Hamel only snorted.
“Do whatever you want.”
Pentos stepped down from the carriage and walked a short distance away from the road. The cold night wind moved quietly through the trees while the moonlight illuminated the empty path.
He reached a small clearing and stopped. Then he took a crystal from inside his coat.
The crystal glowed faintly as he activated it.
A ripple of light spread across its surface.
Moments later, a shadowy figure appeared inside the crystal projection.
The figure’s face remained hidden in darkness.
A calm voice came from the crystal.
[So how is it?]
Pentos looked slightly irritated.
“He is strong,” he said coldly.
“And he seems quite arrogant.”
He paused briefly.
“We were beaten up as expected.”
For a moment the figure on the other side remained silent.
Then the voice spoke again calmly.
[I expected that much.]
Pentos’ expression immediately turned sour when he heard that.
“What do you mean you expected that much?” he asked with clear annoyance.
His grip on the crystal tightened slightly. The shadowy figure remained calm.
[It seems our preliminary analysis of him still fell short.]
The figure paused briefly before continuing.
[Duke Lancelot might be the one who saved him from the assassination.]
Pentos frowned slightly.
“Hmmm.”
He nodded slowly.
“Duke Lancelot’s support has formed a huge barrier that will protect that bastard.”
The shadowy figure remained silent for a moment.
Then the voice spoke again.
[It will.]
[But not for long.]
Pentos immediately raised his head.
“Not for long?”
“What do you mean?”
His tone carried curiosity and a hint of unease.
For a brief moment the shadowy figure did not answer.
Then the figure leaned slightly forward.
Even through the crystal projection, Pentos could sense the cold amusement behind the words.
The shadowy figure’s lips slowly curved into a twisted smile.
[Only time will tell.]
The crystal flickered once.
Then the projection disappeared completely.Pentos lowered the crystal slowly.
The cold wind moved across the clearing again.
His expression remained serious as he stared into the darkness ahead.
“These old foggies and their way of making things mysterious is really a pain in the ass.”
