Primal Pursuit - Page 149
“Says the man who fucked his son’s fiancée.”
Gabriel doesn’t flinch. “Good point, but that was fucking love, and you know it.”
“And this is the other side of that coin.”
He raises his brows. “Hate?”
“Revenge.”
“Yours or hers?”
I sigh. “The billion-dollar question.”
“Do you really think she’s going to give up her plans of revenge she’s had since she was a kid?” He shakes his head. “You’re not that cuntmatized.”
“She’s not going to kill me.”
I don’t think she is, but push her hard enough, stretch her boundaries to their snapping point, and she just might.
“She knows your name. She knows you’re an Elite, that you’re linked to Dark Sovereign business. That, my friend, is dangerous. Revenge can be worse than death.”
I nod and lean in, lowering my voice. “If it comes to that, I’m a cold motherfucker, and there’ll be a bullet with her name on it.”
“Even if you have feelings?—”
“Feelings beyond fucking is not my jam. And if she’s going for revenge, it’s me. Bleeding out. On the ground.”
“Can you stop fucking grinning?”
“Why? Look, I know who ordered the damn hit on her parents, and so does Alexius, as I assume all of you. I justdon’t know why. And maybe it’s time to find out, especially as Alexius wants something.”
“And her uncle?”
Anything remotely like a grin vanishes. “That’s the information I need.”
“We’re working on it. What we do know is the Parish family, Frank and his wife, have more money than Poppy’s parents did. Not Cayman Islands rich or anything, but way more than enough. They used her college fund to support her. I don’t see embezzlement. Or anything untoward. But yeah, we’re working on digging up connections. So, if you know anything?—”
“I don’t.”
“I just thought you’d like to fucking share.”
“Not at this point.”
In the warehouse, I had to ask. The dead guy said Frank. I know a number of Franks. But considering Rabbit has an uncle with that name and her father worked for Fowler, I came to the conclusion that it was no coincidence. But I had to confirm. Make sure. And that dead fucker answered what I already knew.
Frank fucking Parish.
He had a Fowler guy follow Rabbit.
Thing is, why the fuck does the Fowler lot want Poppy? This necklace? Something else?
“I’m going to talk to her. Let me know when they turn up. And when we get that information? I want to know.”
Gabriel gives me a half-assed salute and strides off. I look down at the box in my hands.
Fowler, I sort of get. If we go to basics with no trimmings, she’s a loose string. I didn’t kill her. And now that Iknow her uncle is somehow involved, I also know they knew all along that I didn’t kill her. They just let that one go.
So, their interest has piqued recently.
