Chapter 884: Solving The Puzzle, Danger
If today happened to be the day the puzzle was displayed, many would have insulted or outright killed Kent when he moved forward, showing he was also here to solve the puzzle.
As a Core Formation stage cultivator, he had no business coming near something that Spirit Lords and a few Heavenly Ascension stage cultivators couldn’t solve.
In fact, his mere presence wouldn’t have managed to make it 2km from the tablet when it was first put up.
However, it had already been three months, and nobody was able to solve the puzzle.
Just that failure was enough for Kent to face no insults when he approached the tablet.
However, as the weakest to have walked forward, looking to solve the puzzle, everyone had their eyes on him, including a few powerful ones sitting at the 7th level, the highest floor of the pagoda.
At the peak of the pagoda sat a Level 6 Heavenly Ascension stage cultivator and two others who also had cultivations at the Heavenly Ascension stage but paled in comparison to the first person.
This person was, of course, Life Emperor Hael, and the two, also Life Emperors, were his immediate subordinates: Life Emperor Kac and Phub.
Life Emperor Hael is the King/Lord of Miracle City.
“Who is that kid?” Life Emperor Kac watched Kent walk and sit down among the fifteen, still doing their best to solve the puzzle.
“I have no idea,” Life Emperor Phub answered, “But why? It isn’t like he is breaking any rule.”
“Of course, I know he isn’t breaking any rules. It is just that a Core Formation cultivator joining the ranks of Spirit Ascension stage and above feels more like an insult to me.”
“Where is the insult in this? It has already been three months, and not even the best Enigmancer was able to solve this damn puzzle. If that isn’t enough of an insult to us all, then I don’t know what an insult is.”
Life Emperor Kac sighed in his heart, knowing what Life Emperor Phub said was indeed true. It isn’t pleasant, but true to the last dot.
“Just where did this puzzle come from, and why was it addressed to us?” Life Emperor Phub wondered, already concluding that soon, something bad would happen if the puzzle wasn’t solved.
Life Emperor Hael sat there, watching as everyone came and failed to solve the puzzle.
Meanwhile, Kent sat there with a calm expression, looking at the stone tablet.
’First of all, this isn’t a puzzle but a riddle,’ Kent sighed in his heart, knowing that the moment things switched from puzzle to riddle, the outcome became one that couldn’t easily be determined.
Puzzles are mostly easy to solve simply because a puzzle is a problem that, to some extent, requires physical interaction to solve. In most cases, a trial-and-error approach often leads to the person finding the solution to the puzzle.
At least, that was his take on puzzles from his Earth Knowledge.
But with riddles, it is virtually impossible to do trial and error.
Kent smiled slightly, making sure nobody saw it, for he could already sense powerful people beyond his strength level keeping close eyes on him.
’The second thing is, for a cultivation world where there are no schools, these riddles are things that require great thinking and problem-solving skills. However, to someone like me who has a PhD in computer science and cybersecurity, this riddle is child’s play to me.’
Kent cast his mind back to his life on Earth.
He became one of the few young people to earn a PhD, largely because his life was too dull and he had no active social life.
His first 25 years were spent on his books, earning many degrees that in the end he didn’t use. Instead, he became a movie director.
’I was boring and a nerd back then, but who would have thought it would help me today?’
This time, the smile on his face caught the attention of others, making them wonder if Kent had solved the puzzle.
Naturally, they were all leaning toward the positive side of things because if he turned out to be one of those who failed, people would find an excuse to make his life feel a little tight.
Kent looked at the first riddle.
’Invisible threads bind the unseen, connecting all yet touching none. I hold the past and shape the future,’ Kent scoffed.
’That is clearly Time.’
’They couldn’t have found something more complex to challenge me.’ Kent focused on the second riddle and scoffed again, feeling a pride he never knew he had been insulted by these easy riddles.
’I move without legs, carry without arms, I am endless yet confined.’ Kent paused and smirked, ’What else would be the answer if not a River?’
’Born from chaos, I dance in silence, neither living nor dead, I consume without hunger.’ He smirked again. ’We both know the answer is fire.’
Kent shook his head, stood up, and started walking toward the three glass boxes.
“What is he doing?” one of the people seated and trying to solve the puzzles asked, looking at Kent.
“Did he solve it?” another said, and soon, everyone started wondering the same thing.
“Brother Jest, show them what true talent looks like,” Ander, who saw an opportunity to make a name for himself, shouted Kent’s name. Kent, of course, stopped, turned, and looked at him and smiled before he resumed his journey.
He knew what Ander wanted, and so he gave it to him. Making a name off Kent’s name wasn’t something he minded. After all, he owned Ander for that ride to Miracle City.
After a few steps, Kent arrived before the three glass boxes. There was a spirit brush on the stand where the three boxes were placed.
He picked it up and channeled his energy into it.
At this point, everyone was looking dead serious at Kent. Even the Life Emperors on the top floor of the pagoda were also paying close attention.
Kent, after pouring his energy into the brush, started to write the answers in runic language, just like how the riddles were written.
In the first box, he wrote Time. On the second, he wrote River, and on the third, Fire.
Right when Kent wrote the third answer, a formation appeared from the ground, and then slowly, the three glasses cracked and dissipated into thin air.
The three boxes were revealed, inciting gasps and shocked expressions from everyone.
The three Life Emperors appeared at the same time, just a few meters away from the boxes. They landed on the ground and walked toward the boxes.
Kent set the brush down and then looked at the boxes.
However, he didn’t get a chance to pay closer attention since the three Life Emperors appeared before him, blocking his view.
“Who might this little brother be?” Like he hadn’t complained a few minutes ago, Life Emperor Kac asked with a smile.
Kent looked at him and then at the two beside him. “I am Jest, a Life Saint.”
The three Life Emperors looked at Kent with some form of respect. Of course, they held respectful gazes because they were truly surprised a mere Core Formation cultivator was able to do what many couldn’t.
“Uhm, seniors, if you don’t mind, I have to solve the puzzle on the boxes. Each of the three contains a message, I believe, and until all three boxes are opened, we wouldn’t know what is inside.”
The three Life Emperors looked surprised, hearing there was another puzzle. However, hearing what Kent said, they stepped aside to let him handle the puzzle.
