Chapter 787: The Drunk Maiden? (Just A Drunkard)
Evelyn dashed from her position, and in the blink of an eye, she reappeared in front of Rael, her sword in hand.
She slashed the sword down, as if trying to cut his hand off. However, before she could even finish her swing, Rael brought down the bottle on the very tip of her sword, causing her to halt in place as all her momentum just died then and there.
For a moment, Rael expected her to just stop and back off. But to his surprise, in less than a fraction of a second, all of her momentum returned as she suddenly dug her sword straight into his arm.
He wasn’t sure whether to be more surprised by the fact that the sword could pierce him, or the fact that even after piercing him, Rael didn’t feel any pain or damage.
It was stranger, in a way.
After all, he was technically immortal right now.
So how could she even cut him?
Instead of answering the question he hadn’t even posed, Evelyn went ahead and cut off his arms completely, then aimed for his head.
But by now, Rael had already seen enough, realizing that she somehow cut him by utilizing the Law of Cutting, or some kind of Law that focused on the destruction of other Laws.
That was his theory at first, but he also couldn’t discount the possibility that her sword was the reason she was able to do what she did.
But nothing was really special about it…?
[It’s not the sword. Rather, it’s her footwork,] Nyx chimed in.
Rael deadpanned, as if he had just heard a load of bullshit.
How does moving your feet any differently suddenly make you cut through someone like me, if you don’t mind me asking?
[I’m not your tutor, figure it out yourself. Also, has your balance changed at all in the last couple of minutes?] Nyx asked.
At her question, Rael froze for a moment, and while dodging Evelyn’s attack, quickly checked his balance. After seeing that it hadn’t moved at all, Rael was relieved.
Yet deep down, he felt like Nyx had somehow managed to alter his balance without telling him.
Whether that was the truth or not, Rael would find out a little later.
Anyhow, he turned his attention back to Evelyn, who kept slashing at him with surprising speed. She had gotten much stronger than he had expected, and now, even if she were to fight a Grade 6 or a Grade 7, she wouldn’t face many issues.
Obviously, she still needed to work on her defense.
And as if to prove that, while she was in the middle of her swing, Rael took a step forward, closing the distance so quickly that she didn’t even have a chance to react before his elbow landed straight on her chin.
Since he held back considerably, she didn’t go flying, nor did he actually hurt her.
But almost like he had knocked the alcohol right out of her system, she glanced back at him with a frown.
“Even if I’m drunk, don’t you think you should pull your punches?”
“Had I hit you any harder, your head, alongside the rest of this galaxy, would’ve been gone, miss,” Rael replied matter-of-factly.
Then, he gently brushed Evelyn’s chin. He also used the healing skill he had picked up way back when, and so, her small bruise quickly disappeared.
She still seemed pissed at him, but at least now…
“I’m glad you got that off your chest. And I’m very sorry for how I made you feel. Everything you said was the truth. I really am like a spectator. Honestly… I feel like I still treat the people close to me as though I was a spectator, too.”
Just then, Rael bowed.
“Thank you for opening my eyes, and I’ll try my best moving forward.”
When Rael raised his head, a cheeky smile appeared on his face.
“Though, you did change a lot. I’m proud of you.”
A pout appeared on her face.
“Stop trying to sound like my parent. We’re the same age.”
If only.
“My bad. If you don’t want me to talk like your parent, I’ll talk like your friend.”
Clearing his throat, Rael said:
“What’s up with your temper? I know a few months have passed, but god damn, woman. I’d assume you’d have gone through a divorce or something, but that’s probably not the case, is it?”
She looked like she wanted to punch him.
“I told you, I had to fight a lot. Mostly for no reason. And mind you, if I wanted to get married, there’s plenty of suitors who’d be happy to have me.”
“Yeah? Don’t you think it’s time to start practicing dual wielding?” Rael said with a mischievous smirk.
“On one hand, you have a family. Then on the other, you have swordsmanship. Just think about it, you’d be teaching your child swordsmanship while they’re still inside you, isn’t that…”
She raised her hand and covered his mouth.
“You’re still weird.”
Rael rolled his eyes and licked her palm, causing her to back off again.
“I don’t like being silenced, especially not by a drunkard.”
“Drunkard? Is that how you see me now?”
Rael shrugged.
“You downed quite a lot to not be labeled a drunkard. Either way, I couldn’t care less about what you drink or who you hang out with. I just hope that moving forward, you set our differences aside and live your life to the fullest.”
Hearing that, she frowned slightly.
“The world doesn’t revolve around just you, you know? I hadn’t thought about you in ages.”
Didn’t she say she was thinking about him a little bit?
Well… Rael was a bit arrogant, so he might’ve left a pretty big impression in her mind.
“Right. That’s good. Also, are you interested in war?”
“I’m not a mercenary,” she replied flatly.
Rael shook his head.
“Nah. I meant in general. A war is going to start soon, so I’m just giving you a heads up. I don’t think it matters which side you’re on, since all sides will suffer. I just hope when shit finally gets real, you’re in a place where I could protect you.”
She crossed her arms.
“I don’t need your protection.”
