Reincarnated as an Energy with a System - Chapter 1758: On The Way

Chapter 1758: On The Way
Ning stood atop many of the army soldiers, watching the vast countryside of the republic fly past them. The undead marched through open grasslands and fields as they hurried their way to the capital.
From where they were, Matthew came to the conclusion that it would take them just over a day to reach the capital. Considering how long it had been since the other side’s army had left, they would still be late, but hopefully not by very much.
Along the way, from time to time, many of the soldiers split off to report the republic’s loss to those that hadn’t heard about it yet. As they moved further in, there were fewer and fewer who weren’t aware.
After some time, they didn’t bother. By that time, however, nearly two hundred different soldiers had joined their group. Although that wasn’t a large addition to the army, some of those soldiers had special abilities, making them quite useful.
Ning peered toward the hill in the distance and moved over to Romus, who sat at the very front of the marching undead, giving directions constantly.
“How are the undead? They have been running for days now.”
Romus nodded thoughtfully, taking a moment to feel with his Spectral senses to the undead. “They are weakened, a bit. How could they not be? They have been moving non stop, absorbing so little energy in the meantime. But, I do believe they are still in better condition. If nothing else, they should be stronger than the average undead the enemy has.”
“That’s good to hear. We will be arriving there soon. Matthew says it will only take a day or so at our current speed. Are you sure you are ready for what is coming? If we do end up fighting, you will be the one controlling the undead. 8,000 is a lot of undead to control.”
Romus agreed. “Even in the old days, the Legions were comprised of multiple necromancers, all working together to direct their undead in tandem. I honestly think I am biting off more than I can chew, but considering the situation, I can only tighten my jaw and chew as much as I can.”
Ning nodded. He brought out something from his dimensional space and handed it to Romus.
Romus looked at it—a scroll—with confusion.
“What is this?”
“Keep it with you at all times. Should the battle start, the first thing they will do is try to go for you. So you need to stay one step ahead of them.”
“What you have there is a scroll of invisibility. If you open it, you will go invisible for a long time. That should give you all the safety you need.”
Romus’ eyes widened slightly at the words. “I… can go invisible?”
“Yes. That should work great for you, right?” Ning asked.
Romus looked at the scroll for a bit, a strange smile clinging to his face at that moment. “Great doesn’t even begin to explain it,” he said. “With this, our army might actually become unbeatable.”
Ning wasn’t sure about the unbeatable part. The enemy did have many people with powers, after all. What he was certain about was that the enemy would not so easily control the capital as they had believed until now.
Ning went over to meet with Matthew, who was discussing with the rest of the soldiers how they were going to approach this matter.
Ning stood by the side, listening to them talk.
“But surely there is something else we can do besides hope that the council members are alive? Is there no Spirit for us to communicate with?” someone asked.
“They will have their own exorcists and overtakers to get rid of our spirits. It will only be a waste. The best we can do is be a surprise for them. Don’t let them know we are coming,” Matthew said.
“But we are fighting, right?” someone else said.
“We will use our words first, but if that doesn’t work, only then will we fight.” Matthew looked around at the unsatisfied faces of his subordinates and couldn’t help but sigh.
“I understand how you guys are feeling. Trust me, I feel the exact same way as well. However, we cannot let our feelings get in the way of this. Our republic has lost, and their people have come. We were already fighting a losing war, and now we’ve lost it completely.”
“If we had more time, foresight, or soldiers, we could have used some troops to cut off their path at the pass and trap them on this side, but we don’t have that. We have already lost. Now all we need to do is make sure the worst doesn’t come out of it and that we protect our citizens.”
“The most important part is that you let this war end forever,” Ning said from the side. “People are tired and traumatized by this war that has taken decades to end, but there are embers of it still remaining. Anger burns within the heart of every soldier on each side.”
“Be sure not to stoke the dying fire, lest you get burned in the process.”
The many others remained quiet after that. They felt the pain of their people dying, and yet they were being told they couldn’t do anything about it. It was understandable that they would be furious.
Ning turned toward Matthew. “Depending on the situation, we might have to start fighting immediately. I want you to hold the bow.”
“Me?” Matthew was surprised. “But I must be in the middle of it all, fighting.”
“You have four arms. You should be able to use both swords and the bow at the same time, right?” Ning asked.
Matthew thought for a moment and nodded. “I suppose I can do that. No, I will do that.”
Ning nodded. “Alas, I’m worried about the opponent’s power and weapons. When we arrive there, if we don’t end up fighting, I want you to immediately get that information. There should be much recorded about them.”
Matthew nodded. “I will.”
