Reincarnated as an Energy with a System - Chapter 1799: The Spirit’s Identity

Chapter 1799: The Spirit’s Identity
Shara looked up at Ning, confused. “What do you mean? What are you going to do?”
Ning looked around, ignoring her for the moment. His eyes seemed to fall in a certain direction. “Do you have the bracelet with you?” he asked without looking at her.
“My brac— oh, yes,” Shara said, quickly pulling on her sleeve to reveal the Summoner’s bracelet.
Ning laid his hand on her shoulder and suddenly the world spun for Shara. The next moment, they arrived in a bright room with glowing chandeliers. Intricate furniture made up of wood crafted by a master covered floor to ceiling.
“My room?” Shara said in surprise. “How… How are we in my room?”
“Bring out the Spider,” Ning told her.
Shara looked at him, her emotions in shambles. She felt whiplash from all the things she experienced in the short amount of time. It took her a moment to register what Ning was asking and used her bracelet to bring out the spider.
The ghastly image of the spider appeared before them, mist forming webs around its body.
Ning pointed in a certain direction. “Throw a large web in that direction and see what you capture. Now!”
Shara acted immediately, making the spider shoot out a large web, as if it were a fisherman trying to cast a large net to catch many fishes.
The web flew through the wall, flying far away before it caught onto something. Shara was surprised. “What did I catch?”
The webs were only supposed to catch a spirit, but spirits were prohibited inside of the palace.
Shara pulled on the web to see what she got. When she did, her eyes widened in shock as she saw that she had in fact caught a spirit.
“But… who put this spirit here?” Shara asked. “And why can I see a spirit?”
Ning stepped forward and watched the spirit struggle inside of the web, trying to get out. “You are an intelligent spirit, aren’t you?” he asked. “You can stop struggling like an animal. It doesn’t suit you.”
The spirit stopped and slowly turned to face Ning.
“You can see me?” the spirit asked. “Only a Reaper should be able to see me.”
“The voice!” Shara shouted suddenly. “That’s the voice I hear in my head.”
“You aren’t going mad,” Ning explained. “This is trying to influence you. But… why?”
“Do not think that you’ve caught me,” the spirit said. “This thing might be able to imprison me for some time, but how long? It will disappear soon, and then I’ll be free. And you won’t be able to stop me once I’m free.”
“We can just kill you,” Ning said.
The spirit laughed. “Kill me? You cannot kill me. No one can. I have lived for generations, interacted with hundreds of Reapers. No one can kill me. No one can touch me.”
“Generations, huh?” Ning asked. “Then you must’ve been influencing them for a long time too.”
The spirit laughed. “And I will continue to do so.”
Ning smiled. “The previous emperor, the one who went mad and was executed, was he your doing too?” he asked.
“Valhador was a weak man,” the spirit said. “He could not handle my directions. He went mad. My Empire was breaking off and he could not keep it together. I don’t need such a descendant. I am happy he was killed.”
Shara gasped and Ning raised an eyebrow.
“So that is who you are,” Ning said, finally recognizing the spirit for who it was. “Emperor Volter, right?”
“He’s the Conqueror? The Onyx flame?” Shara asked.
“Emperor of the Burning Conquest, that is who he is,” Ning said.
The spirit scoffed. “It is good that you have recognized who I am. Now you shall do as I say and bring the Onyx empire back to life. You shall conquer the continent in my name.”
“How are you alive?” Ning asked with a curious look. “Reaper souls don’t turn to Spirit. It fundamentally doesn’t work that way.”
“I am special,” the spirit said. “I am an Emperor. My soul survives forever.”
“Special…” Ning said. “I see. You are special alright.”
“Ning?” Shara called for him, confused as to what they were supposed to do. She had caught the soul, but nothing she could do was affecting it at all.
Ning reached for the spirit. “If you were any other soul, this might’ve been difficult. But you’re not, so I am lucky.”
The spirit was surprised to see Ning grab onto him directly. That should not have been possible.
“What… what are you doing?” the spirit asked.
“Let me explain a bit about souls,” Ning said. “Souls are reborn again and again, for many a time, so long as they can enter the cycle of reincarnation.”
Shara raised her eyebrows. She had never heard of such a thing.
“However, once a soul goes through the reincarnation cycle a lot, it gets weaker each time, carrying on wounds, until it can no longer enter it. When that happens, the spirit remains on this side, forever destined to roam around the world and leak what little energy it has that makes it what it is.”
“That is when a soul truly dies.”
He looked at the spirit in his hand.
“You are at that stage right now. You have nowhere to go.”
The Emperor’s soul remained silent for a moment. “I do not know what you’re talking about, whatever you’re saying does not stop me from forcing you to do what I want.”
“Normally, no,” Ning said. “But, today your life comes to an end. Today, I have a new power, you see, and you are the perfect target for me to test it on.”
Before the spirit could say anything else, Ning activated the newest of his powers rewarded to him by the Creator.
Dead Soul Absorption.
It allowed him to absorb the remaining energy in a soul that was pretty much dead, with no way for it to enter the reincarnation cycle.
The skill activated, and it tore into the Emperor’s soul as it consumed everything that made it what it was.
