Reincarnated as an Energy with a System - Chapter 1846: Gathered Crowd

Chapter 1846: Gathered Crowd
Ning picked the three out of the burning building and tossed them outside. He had some inkling that whatever was happening to them was not that different from what had happened to the two drows. He scanned the room, a little thankful that the walls had held up surprisingly well. The two other apartments on either side of his were still standing.
Fire crackled wildly, the roaring of flames loud enough to drown almost everything, but Ning could still hear more people outside, attempting to come in.
He walked out and saw what awaited him. Nearly 50 people were gathered outside, two of whom stood with a bazooka in their hands. The stairs were filled with more people coming toward him, each one looking more frenzied than the last.
There was no rhyme or reason to what race was in there. Ning could see almost everyone, from someone as tiny as the gnomes to someone as massive as the Dragonborns.
The door next to him opened, a surprised young couple walking out.
“Get back in!” Ning shouted. “And call the fire department before these flames reach your house.”
The two entered their home promptly, closing the door.
Ning returned his focus toward the stairs and walked over. A dwarf had just come up it and came at Ning with his fists balled and ready to fight, but Ning dodged the attack in time and kicked the dwarf in the back of his head lightly enough that he would only suffer a minor concussion and lose consciousness.
He then swiped the dwarf with his feet and tossed him toward the others, who were knocked down the stairs like pins hit by a bowling ball.
As they fell, Ning’s eyes scanned the crowd, searching for his true enemy in all of this.
For a moment, he wondered if she was not here at all and had instead left after hypnotizing each of these men into fighting. However, when thinking back to how the centaur had died, the woman had to follow up along with the two drows to continue her hypnotism. She would be around here somewhere.
’Curiously though, why is it all men?’ Ning wondered. Not a single female was in that group of frenzied fighters. That should’ve made searching for the woman even easier, but the frenzied men were not all that had gathered.
Onlookers and bystanders had filled the road as people came out of their houses to check on what was happening. A gathering was nothing but a gathering to them, so many had started getting closer to the frenzied men, and many of them were women as well, making it harder for Ning to find the one he was looking for.
’She should still have a visual on all of this,’ Ning thought. ’She needs a direct visual link, and with this crowd, that should be impossible. If that’s the case, then she would be…’
Ning’s eyes searched for the spots in the area outside his house that would give the woman a full view of everything and found what he was looking for.
Opposite his apartment, on the roof of the building on the other side of the road, a silhouette attempted to hide in the darkness. However, Ning could perfectly see the woman.
Long dark hair, slender face, and blood-red eyes made it easy to recognize the vampire.
Ning’s eyes caught something out of the corner of his eye and turned as he saw Larissa running back toward him. She had to have run around the corner and looped back to the front of the house.
He was worried she might’ve still been drunk and her mobility impaired, but Larissa quickly shouted,
“Everyone, leave. This place is dangerous. Let the police handle it!”
Only a few people next to Larissa did anything upon hearing her. The ambient noise of the crowd itself was too high for most to hear it.
A few of the frenzied men turned away from Ning and toward Larissa, no doubt controlled by the woman to attack her.
At the same time, the bazooka fired, another grenade flying directly toward him.
Ning reacted in time, directly launching himself toward the incoming explosive, his body transforming into a bat. His wings unfolded wide open before closing in quickly as the attack hit him.
His wings covered the massive explosion that shook the very ground, protecting everyone from the projectiles coming out of the explosion. He opened his wings, clearly unharmed. The sight was a shock for all to see.
He quickly flapped his wings and flew toward Larissa, arriving between her and her attackers moments before they reached her. He transformed back into himself and quickly knocked all five men out.
He took one look at Larissa to make sure she was fine and turned back. He launched himself into the air, took a deep breath, and shouted,
“LEAVE!”
Ning needn’t have said anything. The explosion from earlier had been enough for most sane people to already run away. It was only the frenzied ones that still remained.
As Ning fell back down, he saw every single man’s eyes turn toward him, wanting to hurt him. As soon as he landed, Ning grabbed Larissa and jumped out of the streets, getting away from her.
The two vanished almost immediately, causing the men to have no target to go for. They looked around dully like puppets no longer controlled. Without a way to fulfill the command they were given, they could do nothing.
Up on the roof, the vampire clicked her tongue. She had been so close to killing him, and yet he had run away at the last moment.
“Where exactly am I supposed to find him next?” the woman mused. “I will have to—”
A sound caught her attention, like a gust of wind. She turned around with a confused look, only to have her eyes open wide in shock as Ning and Larissa stood behind her, each one looking at her with contempt.
“So, you are the one who wants to kill me, huh?” Ning asked. “Mind if we talk things out before we become violent?”
