Chapter 1857: Preparations for…
The cameras from the front of the woman’s house showed nothing. The package had flown out of the view of the camera, striking her door before falling right below.
The woman could be seen walking out and grabbing the package before walking in. There were no other angles that could show where the poison had come from.
The account the money came from for her also led to nothing. The account was tied to a foreign bank that was held under a shell company, which was paid from a hundred different other accounts, making it impossible to know where the money actually came from.
The phone call that had gotten everything started could also no longer be contacted.
As it stood, Ning and the rest were helpless in finding out who had done anything.
Ning and Larissa met early the next day to discuss what else they could do, but since there was no way forward, the only thing they could do was go meet the Clairvoyant again.
Even before the shop had properly set up, Ning and Larissa were at Keira’s place.
Before Ning knocked on the door, the door opened, revealing a woman in a green dress with two low ponytails. A shawl lay above her, sparkling with glitters.
Keira grinned. “The birdsies said you would be coming. I was looking forward to meeting this one,” she pointed at Ning.
Larissa said nothing, but she did make it very clear with her expression that she was looking forward to what was going to transpire.
Keira turned toward Larissa. “Larissa~! How have you been, girl?” she asked. “How is your father doing?”
Larissa suppressed her groan. “Once again, Keira, my father is dead. Please stop bringing him up.”
“Oh…” the woman’s face fell a little. “Come on in. Would you two like some tea perhaps?”
“Sorry, Keira, but we’re in a bit of a hurry. So if you could just help us, it would be great,” Ning said as he brought out a wad of cash. “We’re going to pay too.”
Keira’s eyes widened a little. “Okay, what do you want?”
Ning brought out some pictures and began laying them down on the table. “I was poisoned yesterday,” he said. “This woman here, named Rika, laced my wine with the poison. She got the poison from some person we cannot find. That’s where we need your help. Who delivered the poison to her? Who was it that wanted me dead?”
“Hmm…” Keira tilted her head slightly. “Give me a moment.”
Her eyes closed suddenly, and a strange silence fell in the room. Ning heard the sounds of wings fluttering around outside, each one seemingly in distress for some reason.
A moment later, Keira opened her eyes again.
“I see wings. He has wings.”
“A man?” Larissa asked. “An angel?”
“Smaller wings. Not bird. Butterfly.”
“A fairy then,” Ning said. “And?”
“He’s worried. Worried about his life, worried about his plans. You’ll ruin it all.” Keira seemed to be struggling to see much as she was. “He doesn’t work alone. Click-clack click-clack. Threads of metal flowing with knowledge. He watches us.”
Her eyes slowly moved toward the corner of the room. “He watches us right now.”
Ning turned to see what she was looking at and saw the camera at the corner of the room. His eyes widened slightly as he turned back around.
“Does that camera pick up sound?” Ning asked.
“No, only our images.”
That was a relief. Ning would be worried if it picked up audio as well, because then he would have to worry about Keira being under attack for whatever she was going to say.
“Can you tell us where he is right now?” Ning asked.
“I see… a fish. A herring,” she spoke up. “It’s scarlet.”
“A red herring?” Ning asked, his face blank. “That’s my clue?”
“Yes! You’ll meet him soon, maybe in a day or maybe in a month. Look out for the red herring and you’ll find him there,” Keira said. “But beware. He’s not alone. He’s never alone.”
Ning nodded. “Thanks.”
He stood up to leave.
“They’re worried,” Keira suddenly said. “The six who remain. They are preparing for when it comes, and it should come. But the future isn’t clear anymore. Their preparations are going to waste.”
“Preparations for what?” Larissa asked.
Keira gulped a little before speaking.
“The Apocalypse.”
Ning’s face was expressionless for a long moment before it slowly changed into one with a wide grin.
“Apocalypse, huh? That sounds fun.”
He left the clairvoyant a few minutes later, having gotten everything he could from her.
“I’ll need to be on the lookout for a fairy whenever I can now,” Ning said. “One that is never alone, I’m assuming?”
“And the fish, don’t forget,” Larissa said.
Ning couldn’t help but laugh at how serious Larissa was, or the fact that he was purposefully being sent to follow up on a red herring. She did not see the irony in that.
But that was just because this world didn’t have a concept of that.
They got into the van. “So, when does your test start?” she asked.
Ning checked the time. “I have an hour before it starts,” he said. “Blake will be worried, so I might as well get there before he gets cranky.”
Larissa stared at him, still unable to believe that the broken man from so many months ago had changed so much that she barely even recognized him anymore.
If someone had asked her about Valen Jassens just half a month ago, she would’ve argued that he was a few memories away from killing himself. And now, he had completely changed his life around.
How did he do it exactly? Was a power alone enough to do that?
“Are we waiting for something?” Ning asked, looking at Larissa.
“No,” she said quickly, getting out of her stupor. “We’re leaving.”
The van rolled out a few seconds later, and Ning was on his way to finally take the Hero License Exam.
