Chapter 1704: A Third Great Spirit
—–
Agua learned many things as she talked with the feathered man, from his name as Quetzalcoatl, to his identity as some kind of priest similar to her, chosen by a special being, a spirit, to hold upon their blessing and powers.
Also, she discovered his age was seventeen, minus the thousands of years he was stuck being a feral, gigantic bird monster that terrorized the cliffs.
“So that’s how it is… Perhaps that’s the reason?” Agua said. “That we were both blessed by Great Spirits somehow created a connection between our minds… or souls.”
Agua, despite usually talking with a rather emotionless and very calm voice, seemed to have gained a lot more personality and emotion in her words since her friendship with Aquarina.
And now, as she talked with someone even more shy than her, she felt like she was slowly becoming more confident too, even in the way she used her words, which left her slightly embarrassed sometimes, as she was bolder than she imagined she could be.
“Yes… Perhaps, that might be the case,” Quetz nodded with a gentle, yet slightly sorrowful smile. “We do have a Spiritual Sense within us, a Divine Blessing of sorts.”
“Um, but which spirit blessed you, Quetz?” Agua asked, tilting her head cutely.
Quetz remained in silence, as he suddenly used his claws to carve the stone in front of him, drawing a big bird above the painting of his family.
It looked even more intimidating and glorious than his own monster form.
“I think he might be long gone now… But he was the Great Spirit of the Cliff Winds, a powerful bird-like spirit of enormous size, whose winds protected us, in exchange, we offered him the blood and bones of the beasts we hunted,” Quetz explained. “He chose a new priest every time the old one passed away… It was something that was chosen before our births, I was the… unlucky one.”
“Another Great Spirit?” Agua was shocked. “Wait, unlucky? Why?”
“That’s because the power I gained from his blessing… I was unable to control it,” Said Quetzalcoatl. “It is the power that… that turned me into that monster…”
“E-Eh?” Agua was surprised, her eyes widening. “B-But… a power like that was given to you by a Great Spirit? But… how? That’s…”
“Spirits are not all benevolent, and they are not all good either…” Quetzalcoatl said. “The Great Spirit of the Cliff Winds was strong and protected us, but what he asked in exchange was a lot too. His powers would also twist our priest, helping them transform into a beast that could aid us and protect us but… I was unable to control it, I was too young, too unexperienced. And instead of helping me, that Spirit did nothing, he watched as I… destroyed everything… W-Why did he do that? Why… did he…?”
As Quetz recalled the cries and the blood everywhere, he began gasping for air, growing more and more nervous.
“Q-Quetz, calm down… I-It’s okay, that’s in the past! I-I… don’t know what else to say but… please calm down…” Agua ended hugging him as he fell to his knees.
Her gentle hug slowly calmed him down, as he looked at Agua with sorrowful eyes.
“You’re too kind, Agua… thank you…” he muttered.
“Let’s… do this one step at a time, okay?” Agua asked. “Let’s… try, and perhaps-“
“It’s ready! The food’s ready!”
However, their conversation was cut short, as their lunch was ready. Aquarina’s loud voice brought the two back to reality, as they calmed down and walked back to their friends.
There, a wooden table, wooden seats, and a lot of food was waiting for them… Quetz glanced at the feast in awe, the smell, the steam, the appearance, it all brought back his appetite.
As a beast, he hunted monsters and ate raw meat and nothing else, it has been thousands of years since he ate proper food.
“This food… it looks so delicious. Colorful fish, fruits, and this is… big crustaceans of some sort?”
Quetzalcoatl glanced at the food in awe.
“They’re giant ants…”
“A-Ants?”
Aquarina giggled a bit as she heard his shocked response.
“Yeah, about that, you haven’t seen any? There’s supposed to be a huge nest up in the cliff… We came here to destroy it as part of the mission Agua took from the Great Oasis Spirit.” She asked.
“A nest… I don’t… remember,” he sighed. “But… I remember fire, a lot of buzzing too… Perhaps I engaged on combat against them a lot, but I was never able to reach their nest.”
“Wow so they fended off a big guy like you?” Silvia wondered. “Hmm, they can fly too?”
“I think so… perhaps,” Quetz sighed. “I’m sorry, I might be too unreliable of a source of information…”
“It’s fine, that gave us some important insight,” said Aquarina with a nod. “At least they couldn’t beat you, so I suppose they’re weaker than us…”
“Let’s just eat already… I’m starving,” Justicio sighed. “Once we’re done we can just continue our travels. Hopefully by noon we can return back home.”
As everyone started eating the delicious meals and finally having some time to relax, Quetzalcoatl glanced at the food in silence, gulping saliva.
“What’s wrong? Did your people ate something else?” Aquarina wondered.
“I-I… well, we did eat fish when available,” he nodded. “I just… I’m hesitant… to be so shameless as to eat your food, after what I’ve done…”
BAAAM!
“Ugh?!”
Justicio patted Quetz’s back so hard the bird man groaned.
“Come on man, don’t be shy! Eat away, you need to eat to keep a healthy body, right? I bet you need to eat a lot with your strength.” He said.
“Yes, please, just eat, don’t worry about anything, Quetz…” Agua nodded.
“T-Thank you…” Quetz sighed, grabbing the fish and taking a bite off it.
Crispy, warm, salty, delicious.
His eyes widened, as he shed a tear.
How many years has it been?
Thousands of years… since he ever had a proper meal.
“Delicious…! This is delicious…!”
He began biting through the fish and devoured it in just a couple of bites, moving on to eat the rest of his plate.
He enjoyed everything on it, and ended even licking the plate, provoking a few chuckles.
