Chapter 1724: A Meal With New Friends
—–
Esmeralda started pushing her big sister’s face away with her little hand.
“Ouch! H-Hey, why are you pushing me away? So mean…” Aquarina cried. “Have I done something wrong?”
“Heheheh…” Esmeralda giggled as she saw her big sister struggling.
“Hey! Dinner’s almost ready, get ready the table, kids!”
As everything was mostly done, Nepheline quickly called the youngsters to sit down and get ready for dinner.
Esmeralda was placed over a couch as she saw her big sister and her friends place everything together with her big, curious eyes.
Once everything was done, they sat down while Esmeralda sat over a wooden baby chair, waiting for her mama while looking everywhere.
“There you go, boy, you look famished, so eat as much as you want! Hey, did you even feed him after beating him down?!” Nepheline glared at Aquarina while furrowing her eyebrows, as she finished serving everyone on the table a plate with fish and other side dishes.
“W-We gave her a lot of food, yeah! We found him right before we had lunch…” Aquarina sighed. “He sure ate a lot! But I suppose we all are tired and hungry; we came running back after realizing it was hopeless to stay.”
“Hopeless, you say? Okay I guess we’ve talked a lot about our winged friend here, but what happened in that cliff, exactly?” Nepheline wondered.
“A lot…” Agua sighed. “Well, from Quetz alone, it was indeed quite a lot of things that happened, but after that, we had to battle a huge swarm of flying ants…”
“Flying…?” Her mother wondered.
As they started talking, Quetzalcoatl glanced at his dishes, it was a huge plate with four, very large grilled fish. They were grilled whole, with head and everything, except a hole in their stomach, where their guts were taken out.
They were covered on sea salt extracted from the lake, and they were also nicely seasoned with all sorts of aromatic spices and sweet oils he had never seen or tasted before.
At the side of all the fish, there was also a small pile of boiled roots, most of the ones he had brought himself, alongside mushrooms which were fried with some sweet flower nectar oil and sea salt, smelling delicious.
“Aah, this food… I’ve never seen something quite like this,” he murmured, as he quickly took one of the fish and took a big bite.
Crunch…
The scales had become crispy with the salt, and the juices inside the fish filled Quetzalcoatl’s mouth with an explosion of incredible flavors.
“A-Aah… Delicious…”
He gasped for a moment, and then resumed his meal, taking several bites one after another, until the fish was nothing but its bones.
“Heheh…”
As he finished his meal and looked at the bones, considering if he should eat them too, he heard Agua’s laughter, as she sat by his right side.
“Was it tasty?”
“U-Uh… Yes.”
He felt slightly embarrassed after realizing his face was nasty with fish meat and salt, and so were his hands, covered in oil.
“Don’t be shy, eat all you want.”
“H-Hmm…”
He nodded timidly, as he quickly started eating the other fish, and then as he tasted its delicious, soft meat, he had some boiled potato-like and carrot-like roots, which were sweet and filling.
The mushrooms were also rather tasteful, and complemented the roots and the fish meat amazingly, giving the young avian man a full experience of the meals, and also the rich culture of this people.
“I-I finished it all?”
He looked a bit disappointed; he was still hungry, but he ended eating his whole plate in just a couple of minutes, Agua was still on her own.
“You sure eat a lot. Here, you can have mine.”
Agua quickly shared one of the fish given to her to him.
“You don’t have to, Agua…”
“It’s fine, I know you need to eat more than I do. As you said, flying must take a lot of energy, right?”
“O-Oh… well… thank you.”
He quickly ate the fish happily, while Agua glanced at him eating…
“So Agua, tell me more about… Agua? Hey, dear?”
“Hm… Ah! Yes?”
Agua, who was somehow daydreaming, quickly went back to reality, hearing her mother’s words.
Her mother had quickly noticed her daughter had been glancing at the young, winged man for quite a while.
It didn’t take a genius to guess what was going in here…
“Has my daughter finally fallen for someone?”
Her mother had never seen Agua show any romantic interest through her whole young life… While most girls her age already had boyfriends or talk about who they like, Agua had always dedicated herself to her job as the priestess, giving her full attention to the Oasis and the Spirits.
Honestly, the chief felt both happy but also quite worried, the man she might have fallen for wasn’t someone stable, even less someone that might stay here with her either…
She feared her daughter’s love might never be reciprocated as well, as someone so ancient as Quetz probably had many other things in mind than romance.
“So you went to the cliff to check the ant nest over there, and it is actually the last one too, huh? There aren’t any more?” Nepheline could be heard talking.
“Yeah, we’ve already gone around the whole Oasis in the last days, so that’s the only place with an ant nest, mom,” said Aquarina. “It seems there’s multiple Queens, based in the Auras we saw.”
“Huh…” Nepheline rubbed her chin and then drank some wine. “Hmm, Multiple queens, huh?”
“Yeah, it was more than just Queens though,” said Aquarina. “Right guys?”
“There was something terrifying inside!” Silvia nodded.
“It was so strong we couldn’t do anything at first…” Justicio added.
“If it wasn’t for Quetzalcoatl’s help, I don’t know how we would’ve gotten out of that situation…” Agua sighed.
“Huh? Wait, what happened?” Nepheline asked.
“It’s… Uh, when we were checking the interior of the nest, our minds were suddenly dragged and trapped inside a Mindscape…” Aquarina muttered, looking a bit worried over her mother’s next reaction.
“YOU WHAT?!”
