Chapter 1726: Khepri’s Past
—–
As they learned about Khepri and her connection with the Great Spirits, Agua asked an important question.
“But there’s also another Great Spirit, the Great Spirit of the Cliff Winds… Khepri, do you remember him?” Agua wondered, as she looked at Quetz, who also grew interested in the conversation. Perhaps he had never learned the origins of this spirit at all.
Khepri looked at Agua and raised one of her eyebrows, which were gold colored and made of the same chitin as the rest of her dung beetle-shaped body.
“What? You think I will ever remember a big, green-colored bird that was very annoying and couldn’t stop talking for a single second? Of course I can’t remember something like that, I never- Wait a second, I do have memories of that?!” Khepri gasped.
She fell into silence, realizing that she indeed remembered something!
Sometimes, when you have amnesia, memories tend to come back in the weirdest of ways…
And now, Khepri realized that sometimes, talking about certain things might trigger more memories, especially of these beings.
The Great Spirits!
“Y-You remember him then?!” Silvia asked. “Hey Khepri, stop being so silent and answer us!”
“I-I do! Agh, stop shaking me around like a ragdoll!” Khepri complained, biting Silvia’s hand with her mandibles.
“Ouchies! Don’t do that! So mean!” Silvia cried lightly.
“Hmph, then don’t grab me and shake me like some toy!” Khepri said angrily. “Anyway, I… I did remember something which was weird because I am fairly sure I didn’t do it before! I guess they just came back… after you talked so much about the damned bird.”
“So you know the Great Spirit? You must be even more ancient than my tribe…” Quetzalcoatl said. “What was he like? Since I was born that we’ve only known him as an intimidating and fearsome guardian of the skies…”
“Perhaps he also lost his memories…” Khepri sighed. “He was… a bird-shaped spirit. Like me and the Oasis Spirit, we were all Artificial Divine Spirits given certain tasks by the Gods… He was a powerful Wind Spirit, and then there was I who was of Light and also had all the Machines, I was in charge of our group, hence I had so many weapons at my disposal… Then there was the Water Spirit, and… well, all of us had weapons like mine actually. But I guess the reason why they lost their memories is because they couldn’t recover theirs… Mine were safeguarded because I… I think I did that before losing consciousness in wherever we were dropped into in the past. And, uh…”
“So everyone had cool mechanical golem equipment like you?” Silvia wondered. “Wow, I can’t imagine the Great Oasis Spirit with such equipment, wouldn’t that be crazy?”
“I-I can hardly imagine her like that either. But you said their memories are linked to such equipment? Why?” the chief wondered.
“Probably has to do with us being Artificial and also Composed of Data, the equipment we wielded were part of our bodies and also where we stored data was located, we are artificial beings after all…” Khepri sighed. “But whatever happened to their ornaments, I guess we might never know. I cannot find it for them; I could only find the ones that belonged to me.”
“So that’s how it is, it’s a pity…” Sighed the chief. “I wonder if the Oasis Spirit would want to recover her ornaments if we told her? Perhaps if you could help her, Khepri…”
“She was very rude to me when I tried talking to her! It was as if she was looking to walking trash!” Khepri panicked. “I am not talking with her! She’s completely different now!”
“O-Oh… if you say so, I guess there’s no helping it,” the chief sighed.
“Khepri, did you had to be so damn rude?!” Silvia slapped Khepri.
“Ouch! Stop hitting me you brute gorilla girl!” Khepri barked back.
“W-Who are you calling gorilla girl?! I am a delicate maiden!” Silvia kept slapping her.
“Aaagh! I’m going to start biting you again!” Khepri said.
“Ouch! Aaagh! Don’t bite me!” Silvia cried.
While watching the two interacting, Aquarina began to wonder where all that friendship and camaraderie they had before went to, as they were acting like literal rivals now.
“Huh, these two will never change, eh?” Justicio sighed, crossing his arms. “Anyway, Khepri, it seems you know the Wind Spirit too, anything else you know about him?”
“N-No, that’s all… But that does prove he was part of my team…” Khepri sighed. “So the Water, the Wind, I was Light and… the last one… Hmmm…”
“Do you remember who it was?” Nepheline wondered.
“Was it… one made of fire? An ant perhaps?” Shade wondered, crossing his arms while looking very serious.
“Aaah… I… I do remember someone that was red…” Sighed Khepri. “Yes… Ugh, it’s so blurry… I wish I could get more of it but there was a red person with me. Probably the Fire Spirit… but how did it even get to the point it became the leader of a giant army of tens of thousands of monstrously strong Giant Fire Ants? No idea…”
“Well, if it was indeed part of her crew that came to the surface in the past…” Said Nepheline. “Then perhaps it makes sense now that a wild monster suddenly have Divinity within them, and one that is also tied with Spiritual Divinity…”
“Hmm, I do have some speculations myself,” Shade nodded. “I would say that all of the Artificial Spirits from Khepri’s team that landed here lost their memories. Even Khepri did, so they had to gather her ornaments to recover it. Unlike them though, Khepri kept most of her original self I believe. And seemed to have never sought worship and faith and instead simply parasitized monsters for their mana to survive, making them strangely strong. Meanwhile the Water and the Wind Spirit were a bit smarter, so they gathered and protected people, and in exchange, their Faith and Worship made them grow stronger, they even chose Priests, Agua and Quetzalcoatl here.”
“And the Fire Spirit…?” Aquarina asked.
