Chapter 1757: Gods And Their Requests
—–
“You must have gone through a lot, heroes, you have my condolences, we had no idea heroes were being manipulated by the Church of the Gods like that…” Said the chief, Aguarapida, as she caressed her daughter’s head.
“Is that church the only one about the Gods?” Wondered Agua. “I’ve always wondered… are there more?”
“Hmm, I suppose it might have come as confusing to most of you, yeah,” Shade nodded. “The Church of the Gods we refer to is actually the Church of the Twelve Great Gods. They’re all divided into twelve smaller branches of each Great God, who govern their own Pantheon of Elemental Gods, Demigods, and Divine Spirits, which are widespread through the Gallatea Continent.”
“O-Ooh…” Agua was fascinated by learning of the outside world, and a more concise explanation of the Gods and their Religions. “Are there more gods than those twelve…?”
“Yes of course, as I had mentioned, each of the Great Gods formed their own Pantheons, they’re in charge of perhaps dozens of other Gods that serve them. Usually it is a Great God that choses a Hero, and that Hero is given their blessing, and then this blessing is further supplemented by the blessings of their own pantheon of gods.” Shade explained. “This is how a Hero’s Blessings Evolve and gain more power. Some of that Pantheon Gods will happily give blessings and rewards, others will ask for special tasks, and some will only help you when you prove yourself to them… Although their appearances and personalities tend to vary, we’ve come to the realization that most of them see this as a game, more than anything. They don’t take it too seriously.”
“A-A game?” Agua muttered, making an expression of worry. “W-What do you mean by a game, uncle?”
“Hm, well, it is hard to explain for someone your age…” Shade sighed. “Okay, sure, some may take it more seriously than others but… to tell you the truth, to them, we, heroes… are only disposable. Once we slay the new Demon King, they expect us to die within the next 60 to 100 years so they can retrieve back their divine blessing and continue blessing, and as you can see with Aquarina, they sometimes bless even more new heroes, so generations of heroes can overlap a lot, especially if they happen to bless long-lived races like elves. Some might be in a hurry to get their divine blessings back, while others tend to bless only those that can live the longest to spread their faith and control the world of mortals through them as their envoys and even avatars.”
“There’s also the Higher Order of the Church, the Holy Church of the Four Original Gods, which are the superiors to the twelve, although they’re rather obscure, it is said their power is absolute.” Sighed Nepheline. “Nonetheless, they sure love doing nothing.”
“H-Has anybody been ever blessed by one of those four?” Agua asked.
“Yes, but not among our own team,” explained Nepheline. “In the past, however, there were some that were indeed blessed by them. They weren’t referred as just Heroes anymore; however, they were known as the “Four Argonauts”, immensely powerful, legendary or perhaps mythological figures that shaped the world. It is said they all ascended to become gods themselves upon death.”
“Four Argonauts? First time I ever hear about those guys…” Aquarina said, rubbing her chin. “They were only four?”
“Yes,” Shade nodded. “All four long gone, I doubt someone will ever receive the original gods’ blessings again… I would assume they only do it when their own order is in tremendous crisis, an example would be if the Original Demon King were about to be revived, or if a threat at the same level threatened the order of the gods tremendously. Otherwise, the four original gods remain mostly… very mysterious, they let the twelve run things for them.”
“What are those original four?” Aquarina wondered. “Do you remember them?”
“I remember their statues, yes, back when we visited the churches when we were much younger…” Shade nodded. “But let’s begin by the twelve first. I am sure you already saw them right? When you were young, you said they called you and Sylphy, and even… threatened you.”
“Aaaah… Yeah, sometimes I think it was just a dream…” Aquarina sighed. “But the memories aren’t as clear anymore. And I of course can’t remember all their names either… but I remember a bitch wearing armor and a huge spear that pointed her weapon at Sylphy when she confronted them and said she wasn’t going to obey them. I was really scare dback then and cried a lot… I wish I could’ve been as strong as Sylphy was.”
“E-Eh?!” Agua gasped.
“Wait, she confronted the Gods head-on like that?!” Justicio asked.
“A-And she… she survived?” Silvia asked.
“Wait a second, that girl, what was her age back then?” Aguarapida asked.
“We were like five…” Aquarina muttered.
“Incredible, to have such bravery as to deny the request of the gods and even confront them while being threatened by them…” Aguarapida muttered, shocked. “J-Just how did you even get out alive from there?”
“They took everything we said as a joke,” Aquarina muttered, looking annoyed. “They saw us as only stupid children, and they were very merciful, but also… it felt like they saw as us nothing but pets. Or tools as dad said. They might see everything as some sort of fun game or something, they didn’t take anything we said seriously and just decided to not care. They believed we would eventually obey them happily once we grew up.”
“Yeah, that’s the true color of the majority of them,” Shade nodded. “I don’t know if of all of them, but the vast majority are like that… Some tend to be kinder, perhaps those convinced the warmongering goddess to not harm Sylphy’s soul due to her insolence. Now, let me give you a small lecture before we continue. The Twelve Great Gods are as follows.”
Shade quickly released shadows from his hands, which began gaining some dark colors, taking the form of twelve figures of varied shapes, divided into two groups of six each.
