Chapter 1813: Don’t Give Up
—–
“No, I won’t accept it…!” Agua interrupted him. “They brought us here for a reason. We have to be useful. We’re fighting a monster that could completely destroy our home. We cannot falter here, you know? Even if our help seems small, we must do something! Please don’t lose your motivation! Y-You were the ones who inspired me to get this far, you were the ones who helped me break out of my shell…! Silvia, Justicio!”
Silvia and Justicio heard Agua’s words, their eyes widening as they realized she was right. It was because of them that Agua had come so far, and they couldn’t act as if everything was over when they bore the responsibility of bringing her here to begin with.
“Damn it…” Justicio stood up, his Aura overflowing from his body. “You’re not wrong, Agua… Sorry you had to see that. I am… I used to be worse. But not anymore.”
“Haha, yeah… Sorry!” Silvia nodded, standing up and preparing herself. Khepri stood by her side as her body was enveloped in mechanical armor, all three Ornaments fusing into a large, humanoid, golden machine. “Khepri! You good to go?”
“Yeah…” Khepri nodded. “Agua, I want to ask you for a favor. We might also need Quetzal’s help.”
“W-What?” Agua asked.
“I’m willing to help in any way I can… As Agua said, we aren’t here to slack,” Quetzal said, his Aura intensifying. “Khepri, what’s your idea?”
“Let’s call that lazy Oasis girl here again!” Khepri said. “Her powers are the perfect matchup against this monster…”
“But she said she was exhausted…” Agua muttered. “I had thought about it, but if she’s too tired, then…”
“And you believed that? What she helped us do didn’t even use a fraction of her true power,” Khepri said. “I’m fairly certain, too, that her Ornaments were never that far away. In fact, they’re all within that Oasis.”
“Huh?! But… I thought they were lost?” Agua asked.
“No, not really. Tethys was lying, and she’s always been a terrible liar,” Khepri smiled. “When I talked with her, I could swear I felt something—three powerful presences underwater. I couldn’t sense them before because I lacked my own Ornaments, but when she was summoned by you and I connected to her powers, I detected where they were, similar to how Quetzal senses things. That’s when I found out the truth.”
“Then that means she has been hiding that she has the Ornaments this entire time?” Justicio asked. “That doesn’t make sense, though! Why would she do something that would weaken her willingly? And didn’t she lose her memories?”
“Yes, all of that is true as well,” Khepri said. “She kept those Ornaments sealed, fully aware of how strong they were and how they could corrupt her. She wanted to start from scratch, even neglecting her own memories in the process. That’s how Tethys has always been. She wanted to start fresh, forgetting her previous self entirely… but that didn’t work as she intended, as we’re now in this huge mess! She’s also powered by the entire Oasis—all living beings there, the entire area, the spirits, and even the Dungeon beneath her can feed her sufficient Mana and heighten her spiritual and divine powers.”
“But if she could help so much, why didn’t she?” Agua asked. “Does she not care about us?”
“She does. She’s just… scared,” Khepri explained. “Tethys has always been stuck-up. She’s been afraid of everything, even though she’s good at hiding it. She must be afraid of her own powers and hesitating even now…”
“To think our Guardian had such flaws…” Agua sighed. “But that does make her more relatable to us, at least… How can we call her, Khepri?”
“Easy, just connect to my Spirit Aura and then to Quetzal’s as well…” Khepri said.
“But why him?” Silvia asked.
“He’s got another Great Spirit inside him, so we can use his presence to further convince Tethys that she can no longer escape her past,” Khepri said. “She has to confront it head-on. Let’s begin!”
Khepri’s Golden Aura connected with Quetzal’s Green Aura, and both Auras linked with Agua’s Blue Aura, using her as the medium to reach Tethys, who had blessed her.
FLAAASH!
.
.
.
Amid the waters of the Oasis, the Great Spirit Tethys swam downward, sinking to the bottom and closing her eyes. Her presence and appearance were invisible to all except those capable of perceiving her, beings like her.
Like Khepri.
“I did what I could, right? I… I’m sure they can win. Those two Heroes… they were definitely stronger than I was…”
She was filled with doubt and hesitation, with fear. Tethys was someone who always lived in fear of her past, a past she never wanted to recall.
Yet when Khepri confronted her, the memories she had tried to seal away and forget began to leak slowly from her soul…
These fragments, these memories, these images of their relationship, their friendship, the years they spent together fighting for the Gods.
And then the tragedy that separated them.
“I am not like her… I am not like them… I must remain here, in my Oasis, protecting my people…”
She closed her eyes as she sank into the Oasis, slowly melding with it, entering a deep slumber to forget her pain, to shield herself from the world outside and its people.
Despite caring for the Oasis People, whom she cherished, Tethys lived in fear and uncertainty, always hesitating, always afraid…
The only person who ever helped her break out of her shell was Khepri, and as these memories continued to surface, she remembered why only Khepri could do that.
And her feelings for her, which she wanted to forget, that past that continued to torment her even now.
“I just want to forget everything… and sleep…”
Tethys had stopped caring and only wanted to sleep, to rest, perhaps for an eternity if necessary, as long as she could be left alone…
She drifted into her dreams of a world where she could be herself, without fear, without hesitation.
And…
“Tethys…”
She ignored that voice, trying to sleep.
“Tethys…”
Yet the voice grew louder.
“Please, can you answer me?”
She recognized the voice. It was her again.
“Tethys, we need you!”
Her eyes opened as she responded angrily.
“I’ve helped with everything I can! Why won’t you leave me alone?! I want… I want to be left alone!”
“But that’s not possible anymore, Tethys…”
“W-What?! What do you mean?”
