“And here I am! Did you miss me, lovebirds~?” Aquarina appeared behind them, startling them.
“Uwah?!”
“Hey!”
As Silvia and Justicio cried out in surprise at her sudden appearance, Aquarina burst into laughter.
“That was amazing, hahaha! From crossing the water to the whole kiss and stuff! Wow! You two are really made for one another, aren’t you?” She laughed a little more. “Just kiss already~! As an expert kisser, I can say confidently that you should just go for it! Don’t be afraid! I went for it with my Sylphy, and it turned out just fine. She loved it.”
“Look, it’s different with us, okay?” Silvia said, flustered. “Um…” She glanced back at Justicio.
“Yeah, I mean… hm,” Justicio nodded, scratching his head nervously.
“Alright, sorry about that~” Aquarina said, stretching his arms. “Anyway, we did it, guys! Let’s go.”
Justicio and Silvia quickly returned to normal, nodding alongside Aquarina…
And then collapsed to the floor, exhausted.
“Uugh…”
“I can’t move…”
Yeah, with their Aura depleted, they had nearly emptied their Mana and Ki reserves. A normal person would have died from draining their energy like this, but those with powerful physiques could endure the pain and damage it caused.
“Alright, let me carry you.”
Aquarina nodded, lifting her friends and heading into the next corridor, which led to the third and final trial.
As she opened the doors, a wave of golden light greeted her, healing her and her friends. It restored their Ki and Mana, and even their Lifeforce, which was intrinsically tied to Ki. Once Lifeforce was healed, Ki followed. Mana was also replenished, perhaps as another “bonus reward” from the Ancestor.
“CONGRATULATIONS, MY YOUNG DESCENDANTS. YOU HAVE PROVEN YOURSELVES WORTHY OF RECEIVING THE SECOND PART OF MY INHERITANCE! …and you two are very adorable together.”
“Huh?”
“Wait, what did he say?”
Silvia and Justicio were confused, barely catching the Ancestor’s whispered comment, revealing a much less serious side beneath his Guardian of the Inheritance persona.
“AS BEFORE, YOU WILL NOW RECEIVE THE SECOND PIECE OF THE INHERITANCE, AND SEE A GLIMPSE OF MY PAST, WHICH I HOPE WILL ENLIGHTEN YOUR UNDERSTANDING OF WHAT THIS TRIAL TRULY WAS, AND WHY YOU ARE HERE.”
FLAAASH!
Suddenly, three spheres of light descended toward them, touching them without hesitation. They absorbed immense power while glimpsing the Ancestor’s past.
In that moment, Aquarina saw the Dry Steppes once more. The house the Ancestor had built was no longer alone. It was now surrounded by dozens of others, and the perimeter was enclosed by a wall made of hard stone, mithril, and spirit crystals.
On the paved streets, children ran from place to place, and villagers tended their gardens, mostly filled with cactuses or large palm trees that could survive the extreme heat. Each house had its own pool and a well filled with drinkable water.
It seemed many years had passed since he first arrived. His face looked older, with long gray hair and a gray beard, though he was still enormously muscular and tall. His wife remained just as youthful as before, and two young children stood by their side.
Aquarina was a little shocked that the man had continued having children—two more—and probably the entire village were his descendants too. Then she noticed some non-Everstonians, mostly Desert Elves, wandering around and moving into the houses.
These were outsiders who had settled here, marrying one of the Ancestor’s children and choosing to help the village prosper and grow over the years.
“It’s about time, dear. Let’s go.”
“Ah yes, almost forgot… raising such a huge group of people sure is tiring, but I like it.”
He walked to the town’s only square, surrounded by plants and centered around a fountain of fresh water. Several children and teens gathered at his side. Most were his grandchildren, all eager as he began teaching them many things.
He taught them mathematics and language, as well as mana control, magic circle creation, elemental rune formation, and more. He knew that left on their own, they wouldn’t be able to figure out these things easily.
One of his responsibilities as their ancestor was to teach them. This resonated with Aquarina, who had taught her friends the skills that helped them surpass the trial. Teaching is perhaps the most ancient of arts, practiced not only by humans but by most intelligent animals.
Teaching how to hunt, how to communicate, how to calculate, how to behave, how to analyze. Through teaching the younger generations, the chances of survival increase, and the bonds between young and old grow stronger. Even the oldest, who may no longer be capable of doing much themselves, are valued and loved within communities for their knowledge. Their wisdom makes them invaluable.
And now, he was doing the same once more. In fact, forevermore. The Ancestor was still here, teaching his children even after tens of thousands of years.
This was why he said they would “learn why they were there.” It was to finally realize that the duty of their ancestor was to teach them, to always guide them.
Aquarina didn’t truly belong here. This man wasn’t her ancestor. She was fairly sure her family and his had split long ago. And yet, she couldn’t help but feel like he was something close to a grandfather to her, or perhaps the closest thing to one.
When she reopened her eyes, she felt stronger than ever. The difference was immense. Her muscles, bones, skin, tendons, even her internal organs and heart—everything felt tougher, more resilient. Her body also felt heavier now, but perhaps that was for the better. Heavier meant stronger punches and kicks.
She felt the power of the Inheritance flowing through her more intensely than before. It contained a faint divine essence, along with mana and other energies. These powers rearranged within her Physique and Magic Circle, allowing her to advance even further.
After completing the second trial and receiving half of the Inheritance, Aquarina felt her second Divinity Spark developing richly, absorbing the power and becoming more defined.
