Chapter 1948: The Cursed Dungeons
—–
“Who did this?!” Ruby demanded suddenly, fury blazing in her eyes as flames flickered wildly around her. Her aura surged stronger with every word. “Why did they have to take my father? I… my mom’s already gone… I don’t want to lose him too…”
“Ruby…” I murmured, gently patting her shoulders. Her flames didn’t burn me. “It’s okay. We’ll find the culprit and stop them before things get worse.”
“Yeah, don’t worry,” Aquarina nodded. “We’re pretty experienced at dealing with crazy things like this already, truth be told…”
“Hm, I agree with you, Aquarina,” my mother said with a nod. “So, Augustus, can you tell me all the Dungeons currently under the control of these Infected Monsters? Wait—why hasn’t your father done anything? Or Aquarina’s parents? Where are they anyway?”
“Ah right, we were supposed to meet them,” Aquarina said. “I think they were eating at some café… I should’ve gone with them now that I think about it.”
“I think Dad hasn’t done anything because he simply doesn’t know,” I said. “He’s been taking these years as a break while cultivating slowly. He hasn’t missed a day of training, but he rarely goes into town, let alone visits dungeons. There’s really no reason for him to…”
“As my husband and a Hero, he should pay more attention to these matters,” my mother said. “If he had intervened earlier, things could have ended much sooner.”
“I don’t think that’s fair,” I replied. “Dad would probably have waited for you to return anyway. And didn’t we tell you he helped me fight off the Evil God of Dungeons and the True Demons he summoned? He pushed himself to his limits and beyond. Later he fought Ifrit in his Divine Spirit Realm just to give Ruby some Spirits so her Cultivation could proceed smoothly… geez, give him some credit, okay?”
“…Hm,” my mother sighed. “I guess… he’s done enough. Well, whatever the case. We need to talk about this with everyone else. It just makes me mad that as Heroes, nobody really paid attention to what was happening.”
“Please, don’t blame the Heroes,” Augustus said. “I’m well aware they have their own lives. Perhaps it’s also our fault—we’re prideful after all. We could have asked for help from the Heroes much earlier. But we chose to stay silent and try to solve the pest problem ourselves, while hiding it from the public to avoid panic.”
“If it had been a public issue, I’m sure Dad and Aquarina’s parents would have noticed something was wrong,” I sighed. “Well, the past is the past… right? Let’s not dwell on it, Mom.”
My mother sighed, then smiled at me and nodded. “You’ve become so good at talking and mediating with me now, heheh. You’ve really grown up, my daughter. You look a bit more like me now.”
I was surprised by her words. “Wow, really? Hahah, you’re flattering me, Mother… Ah, right! We shouldn’t talk about this… more importantly, the Dungeons… Also we should go find Aquarina’s family.”
Augustus had already finished marking the affected dungeons on a map. Not every dungeon was compromised—some remained safe, guarded by high-ranked adventurers. Golem Masters had also been hired by the government to contain the Monsters and prevent widespread chaos.
So despite how serious things had become, the situation was still manageable for now. It hadn’t escalated into a state of emergency, and Evercraft’s government appeared to be doing everything possible to keep it from worsening.
“I’m surprised it reached this point without any of you—not even the government—contacting the Heroes or my father…” my mother sighed. “Why?”
“Well, the people here, especially the majority of the population like the dwarves… well, they are very prideful,” Augustus laughed lightly. “We’ve lived here for centuries, and it doesn’t feel right to scream, cry, and beg the King or his children to come help us as if we were helpless little babes. You understand, Your Majesty? Evercraft isn’t made of weaklings either, and our Magic Tech is among the most advanced. Our strongest Golems can handle this and more.”
“Excessive pride can only hurt you…” my mother sighed, shaking her head. “But… I suppose you’re right… and you didn’t know it came from an Evil God, so how could you have realized how truly dangerous it was…”
“Ah yes, I’m sure we would have contacted the King or the Heroes immediately if we had known it originated from an Evil God that had settled somewhere…” Augustus nodded. “Now that we know, well, I’m sure everyone would gladly accept your help… I’ve already contacted the higher-ups. Some government officials and the King of Evercraft would like to speak with you and the Heroes—young and old—about what’s happening… they even said they could offer assistance and monetary compensation.”
“Hm, I suppose this is necessary anyway. Things have escalated too far,” my mother sighed. “Very well, tell them to schedule a meeting for tomorrow morning. 9 AM is fine, right?”
“Of course! I will contact them and pass on the message,” Augustus said, using a magic necklace to reach a messenger who would relay it to the government officials and the King.
Wow, we’re meeting the King of Evercraft tomorrow? This is exciting! We’ve only lived around here, visiting occasionally, blending in mostly as civilians.
But really, I’ve always wondered what the King would be like… now I’ll get answers to a lot of my questions, I’m sure.
“For the time being, let’s find Aquarina’s parents…” my mother said, noticing Ruby’s depressed expression. “And Ruby, don’t worry. I swear I will defeat that threat and save your father. You have my word—and the word of someone like me is very valuable.”
“A-Ah…” Ruby looked up, surprised. “Thank you, auntie…”
“You’re the new Heroes, right? I’m intrigued about what you’ll accomplish in the future. You’re the first Blacksmith Hero,” my mother said. “I’m sure you’re destined to forge the next generation’s Legendary Weapons one day… but above all, it’s very surprising you belong to a Demon Tribe family. The Red Oni, is that right? You’re the first Hero bearing Demon Blood… I wonder if this is what the Gods intended, or a mistake on their part. Whatever the case, it is a welcome change. With Lara and Luck as the first Anima Heroes, perhaps… Heroes can finally be more than just humans and elves for the most part, with the occasional dwarf.”
“Ah… thank you. I was also confused as to why I was chosen, given my lineage and all,” Ruby sighed.
