Chapter 1966: Evolving Red
—–
Three large puffballs leaped toward me. They were all part of Red, a truly unique lifeform. Technically a True Demon—the only one I could summon using the True Demon Authority Skill I had obtained—they resembled adorable balls of red fur with one, two, and three eyes respectively, small horns atop their heads, and wide mouths lined with sharp fangs.
They represented the smallest, weakest possible form of a True Demon, apparently. Red had continued evolving without consuming any souls so far, surviving instead by absorbing soul essence from me through our bond, which I shared to nourish him.
Because these True Demon Familiars are linked to my own True Demon Authority, and because that Authority does not grow without me devouring souls… well, they had remained stagnant. It was only thanks to the system that they could develop at all.
Rather than transforming into a large, ferocious True Demon, Red possessed a strange ability to duplicate himself and maintain multiple bodies, each one gaining its own unique power and adding a new skill to his arsenal.
Yet he was not truly stagnant—his skills leveled up and his stats increased as he gained levels, defying the logic that governs True Demons, which requires them to devour souls to grow.
What was happening to Red was like forcing a lion to eat only vegetables; the lion would eventually starve… but thanks to the system, Red survived and grew stronger, adapting to this soul-less diet.
Instead of souls, he passively absorbed soul essence while feasting on meat—he loved swallowing monsters whole, devouring them in seconds across his three bodies. He also enjoyed drinking blood and other fluids.
Oh, right—he could even consume magic, technically capable of eating my endless mana!
So yes, Red was an extraordinarily unique lifeform.
After petting all three of them, I nodded and opened my system window.
I pressed [Yes] on the Evolution Request, and then…
FLAAASH!
All three puffballs glowed brightly before erupting into blazing infernal demonic flames.
The pillar of fire was so massive it pierced the ceiling and melted the surrounding ice into steam in mere seconds.
Wow.
Slowly the flames receded, revealing four small figures.
Well, not so small anymore—the puffballs, previously no larger than one meter each, had grown to…
“Two meters?!”
They were bigger than me now—and there were four of them!
The fourth had dark green fur and four red eyes, along with a long black horn.
“There’s four now!” Alice said, giggling. “Red is always so funny when he evolves.”
“Woah! W-Wait!” I tried to back away, but Red used all four bodies to pounce, snuggling me tightly and licking me everywhere with their enormous tongues. “Eugh, stop…! I know, I know you love me, but stop it…” I cried, struggling to push them back.
Covered in drool, I sighed and checked Red’s new status.

“Eh? Wow, what the hell are these stats?!” I exclaimed. “They’re all 50k—way higher than any of my other familiars at Level 0 even as B Ranks! Is this because you’re B+ Rank now? No, even then…”
“Maybe it’s because they’re True Demons,” Furoh said. “They’re obviously far stronger lifeforms than any of us. They’re so powerful that everyone fears them, and they even have their own world… Technically you’re raising an alien.”
“You’re right…” I nodded. “But still, wow. You’re incredible, Red! Well done!”
“Gryar!” All four giant puffballs bounced around joyfully, making the floor shake with their weight and newfound size.
“Now, let’s see…” I reviewed the system messages again. “I see—everyone’s close to max level. Are you all looking forward to it? With Armageddon approaching and the Dungeon expanding, finding suitable materials for your evolutions shouldn’t be too difficult.”
“I’m looking forward to it!” Scarlet said, floating beside me.
“Me too!” Sapphire nodded. “I wonder if one day we could take a Spiritual Form to… well, be more than what we are right now.”
“Why? A sword and a shield are cool!” I said.
“We know you like us this way, but it’s hard to do things,” Scarlet explained.
“We would like to interact with everyone a bit better,” Sapphire sighed.
“Hm, I see. Well, that’ll depend on what you become after evolving,” I nodded. “I love you two just the way you are, girls… so don’t feel like you’re not enough or anything. You’re my sword and my shield! My most beloved friends.”
“More than everyone else? Really?” Scarlet asked.
“More than Alice?” Sapphire asked.
“Eh?” Alice looked at them with a hint of jealousy. “Surely Sylphy loves me more… I was her first ever friend.”
“Wouldn’t that be me though? I saved her life back then, and I’ve been stuck with her since she was a baby!” Ignatius said.
“Hmmm, I thought Sylphy loved me more,” Yggdra said. “After all, she raised me with so much love, and I waited years for her to return…”
“Master loves mama and me the most!” Naturia nodded.
“Umm…” I felt overwhelmed as most of my familiars suddenly began competing for my affection. “I-I love you all equally! Okay? It’s just that with Scarlet and Sapphire, I entrust them with my life, so… well, that’s all! Okay? Don’t get jealous…”
Once they settled down a little, I realized my sword and shield would soon evolve, and I would need to feed them new materials to make them even stronger.
But wow—they were finally stepping into A Rank territory! Isn’t that the Rank for Legendary Weapons? I was getting kind of excited!
I had also been considering a Living Armor for myself, or maybe a Living Set of Clothes? A dress, skirt, boots? Or perhaps that would be too much.
Maybe a full set of interconnected armor would work, though I suspected it would become just as clingy as the rest if I wore it constantly.
While thinking about it, I noticed some new system notifications.
Ding!
[After demonstrating your incredible abilities as a Monster Hunter, the System has blossomed with a new developing function: Drop Items.]
[To solve the problem of constantly relying on Quests, the Drop Item System will allow you to obtain rewards based on the Monsters you Hunt and how strong they were.]
[Do you wish to unlock the new Drop Item System?]
[Cost: 200.000.000 EXP.]
[Yes] [No]
“Umm… Alice?! Is this…?” I asked, stunned by the sudden appearance.
“Indeed! I have finished preparations for this new System!” she nodded. “So please, go ahead. It requires a lot of EXP, but you will gain far more in return.”
“It sounds awesome!” I said. “Okay, two hundred million EXP is nothing if I can get items like this!”
I pressed [Yes] without hesitation.
