Chapter 1977: Bugpocalypse (1)
“Do you hear something?”
“What are you talking about?”
“Stop messing around and focus already, we still have a lot to take care of.”
The mercenaries all mocked the one among them that had made a fuss asking this question.
However, the one that had asked that question couldn’t help looking around them with a strange look on his face.
After all, he could hear the sounds that were coming from all around them. Even if the others weren’t able to hear it, he could hear it very clearly and it was slowly messing with him.
It was faint, but he could hear the sounds of something moving all around them.
With how much he heard, it really felt like they were completely surrounded by something.
No matter how the mercenary tried to ignore it, he just couldn’t ignore it when he was completely surrounded by the sound.
The more that he tried to ignore it, the more it started getting on his nerves.
So in the end, he really couldn’t help saying, “We really should leave this place…”
The leader of their group however didn’t seem happy that this mercenary was saying this, though it wasn’t as if he could do anything since this was one of the founding members of their group.
That was why no one had actually done anything to him even though he had been complaining this entire time.
As a founding member, he did have some status among these mercenaries.
However, this was still a detriment to them since they were here to make money.
“Just bear with it, we’ll be there soon.” He said through gritted teeth, showing that he was trying to be accommodating while also showing that he was close to being pushed to his limit.
In the end, that one mercenary had no choice but to accept it.
Though this wasn’t the only problem that they encountered.
“Where’s our target?”
The mercenaries were all unhappy when they saw that what they had come here for wasn’t there.
From the signs of it, there was only one explanation why these things weren’t here.
Yet they had clearly marked it off that this was their territory.
So for someone to take these things, it was a clear declaration of war.
“Find them.” The leader said in a cold voice, to which all of the mercenaries immediately followed his order.
When their interests were taken from them like this, there was no doubt that they wouldn’t let whoever did this get away.
Though when they looked around, they couldn’t help finding that they couldn’t find what they had expected to find. Instead of finding traces of people, it seemed like there were no tracks at all.
The only thing that they could find were traces of bugs being in the area, but they didn’t believe that this was related to it. Even if there were more traces of bugs than usual, it wasn’t as if they would be able to do much as bugs.
“Is this really all that you can find?” The leader said in an even colder voice.
The other mercenaries were taken aback when they heard this, but it wasn’t as if there was anything that they could do. No matter how they tried searching, they couldn’t find a single trace of humans passing other than themselves.
But at the same time, they could hear what the leader was trying to accuse them of.
If it wasn’t someone else that stole their bounty, then the only explanation was that one of them had betrayed their group.
This thought had also passed through their minds earlier, but they had pressed it down since it wasn’t something that they wanted to admit.
It wasn’t that they trusted each other, it was just that this really was the worst case scenario.
But the one mercenary that insisted on hearing the sounds earlier said, “It’s the bugs. The bugs were the ones that did this and even now they’re still around us.”
When he said it like this, the other mercenaries looked at him with a strange look.
They were looking at him as if they were worried that he had gone crazy from being in this place for too long.
The mercenary could naturally see the way that his companions were looking at him, so he said, “No, this is the only thing that makes sense. In the first place, we’ve never seen so many bug tracks in this place before this. For them to suddenly appear here, isn’t that strange?”
“Instead of thinking about bugs, shouldn’t you be thinking about what we should do now?” The leader cut in, using his authority to suppress the other mercenaries.
Hearing this, the mercenaries ignored the one that was talking about the bugs and narrowed their eyes to look at each other.
After all, this was what their leader was referring to.
Before they headed back, they would have to deal with the problem of the traitor among them.
If they were to go back now, there was no telling if they would be able to find the traitor before it was too late. If they went back, the ones that had betrayed the rest would be able to get away.
It was only in this Death Valley where they had nowhere else to go that they would be able to find and catch the traitor.
So it seemed like their leader wasn’t planning on letting them leave until they found the traitor.
The problem was that none of them was a traitor.
The problem was that it was that one mercenary talking about bugs that had been right all along.
It was a good thing that they didn’t have to keep fighting for long.
“What is that sound?”
When one mercenary said this, all of the other mercenaries followed along since now they could all hear it.
“It’s the sound of bugs?” The leader said in a confused voice before they were shocked to find that there was a wave of bugs that were coming at them.
