Chapter 2088: History of the elementals
“It seems that you’re disappointed with our answer.”
I was caught off guard by how blunt the flame elemental ancestors were, but it wasn’t as if there was anything that I could respond with.
They were the ones that insisted on doing this.
So in the end, all I could say was, “What can you expect from me?”
The two of them didn’t say anything at first before suddenly one of them said with a sigh, “To make it up to you, let me tell you something about us elementals.”
My brows couldn’t help knitting when I heard this, but it didn’t seem like anything was going to change the mind of this flame elemental ancestor.
So I wanted to see just what they were planning to tell me.
“It’s very simple, we elementals were nothing more than weaklings that were stepped on by everyone else. However, we also didn’t know any better since we didn’t have any awareness of this.”
This seemed like a very strange description of themselves, but it didn’t seem like the ancestors were done.
“It was the same for all of the different races that existed back then. None of us knew anything about this world and we were learning how to navigate our way through this world. That was until one day, a certain race appeared.”
The way that they said this sounded a bit ominous…
Especially since they were looking at me with this look that I couldn’t understand.
There was a part of me that could already guess what they wanted to say, but I just waited to see what they would say.
“I’m sure that you’ve already guessed, it’s the humans.”
As expected was all that I could think, but I still didn’t understand why they would say something like this. After all, it wasn’t as if humans existing would be able to change them the way that they were describing it.
But the story was very simple.
The humans using the intelligence that the gods gave them spread out all over the place. They were the ones that all of the other races had observed and learned things from.
It could be said that the humans were the ones that had guided all of the other races on their path.
But that didn’t make any sense at all…
“Didn’t the humans only rise in recent times? From what all of the other races have said, the humans were a race that had been suppressed by the other races until they used their ability to procreate to outnumber them. There were no traces of humans being as widespread as these flame elemental ancestors are making them seem.”
As if they could guess what I was thinking, the flame elemental ancestors said, “During the war of the gods, the ones that turned first were the humans. Since they were the most intelligent, they were also the most greedy. There were some that were completely consumed by their greed, which was why they turned to the side of the forces of Destruction.”
It didn’t take a genius to tell that they were telling me this for a reason.
The way that they looked at me as they said this made it very clear why they were saying all of this to me.
In a way, it was a kind of warning.
In another way, it was a kind of threat.
But I could also tell that there was something personal that was also in their voices as they said this. It was as if they had personally experienced something to do with the betrayal of the humans in the past.
Only this wasn’t something that was easy to ask and it didn’t seem like they were that willing to talk about it either.
“What happened to the humans by the end of the war?”
With a snort, the flame elemental ancestors replied, “What could be done? They had been completely corrupted, so there was only one way to take care of them.”
I wasn’t really surprised by this answer and it filled the gaps that I had been thinking of.
So the humans had once been a much more dominant race in ancient times, but then they were destroyed because of what they did.
Even if I wanted to deny this possibility, it was impossible since there were people that had already proven this. The former Democratic Union was the perfect example of this situation.
But at least they served as a deterrent to any other humans that might choose to follow the same path.
Other than that, there was the fact that the gods were more involved this time.
Namely, they chose a human as their representative to ensure that none of the humans would want to go against races of the continent.
At the same time, there was also the Holy Empire which was a nation of humans that were devoted to the gods.
It seemed like the gods had learned from their mistake in the past and had taken steps to prevent it. They were making sure that the humans wouldn’t do what they did in the past.
It also explained a lot about why they chose me.
“We won’t disappoint like the humans in the past.” I finally said after I had finished processing all of this information.
The two flame elemental ancestors narrowed their eyes to look at me without saying anything. They were clearly scrutinizing me to see how serious I was about this statement.
So that was why I just calmly looked right back at them without anything to hide.
“We’ll be watching.”
This was the last thing that they said before they disappeared without a trace.
This wasn’t just a warning on behalf of the elementals, this was clearly a personal matter for these two flame elemental ancestors.
It really made me wonder what had happened to them in the past that they would act this way.
When I looked at the other flame elementals, all of them had confused looks on their faces.
It seemed that none of them knew anything either…
