Chapter 271 Selene and Alaric’s Arrival At The Mansion
Alaric and Selene stood before a massive mansion complex that stretched across several kilometers of landscape, its value easily reaching into the billions of dollars, befitting of the owner’s status.
Alaric’s face remained completely indifferent, as if he were looking at any ordinary building. But Selene’s expression was complicated, conflicted emotions spreading across her face.
‘I haven’t been to this place in so long…’ she thought, forcibly suppressing feelings that threatened to consume her, opening wounds that she had tried to seal deep within.
“Having second thoughts?” Alaric asked quietly, noting her hesitation.
“No,” Selene replied, though her voice carried uncertainty. “It’s just… strange being back here after everything.”
“You don’t have to do this if you’re not ready, whatever business brought us here can wait.” Emma said gently from beside them.
Selene shook her head. “No. I need to face this eventually. And Alaric said it was important.”
Alaric studied his sister’s face carefully. “Selene, you know I would never bring you back here without good reason. But if this is too difficult, you can do it another time—”
“It’s fine,” Selene interrupted, then looked at the imposing building. “Besides, it’s not like he can hurt me anymore. Not with you here, brother.”
Emma glanced between the siblings, clearly sensing deeper currents but tactfully remaining silent.
“Good,” Alaric said simply. “Because today, things are going to change for you.”
The ornate gates recognized Alaric’s approach and opened automatically, their motion silent despite their enormous size. As they walked up the pathway lined with beautifully trimmed bushes, Selene’s steps grew noticeably more hesitant.
“The gardens look exactly the same, down to every hedge, every flower. Nothing has changed.”
Her voice dropped to barely above a whisper.
“It’s a hell disguised as paradise.”
The three approached the mansion’s main entrance—massive doors carved from rare wood and inlaid with precious gems. Powerful guards stood at attention on either side, stepping aside respectfully when Alaric and Selene approached.
Inside, the foyer had soaring ceilings painted with classical murals. It was everything that luxury represented, from furniture to flooring.
An elder butler waited for them near the grand staircase, his posture impeccably straight despite his advanced age, hands clasped formally behind his back.
“Young Master Alaric. Young Miss Selene. And Lady Emma, It’s truly a pleasure to see you all after so long.” Alfred greeted.
They returned his greeting with varying degrees of warmth. Alfred had always been one of the few caring staff members, never involving himself in family politics but consistently showing kindness when possible.
“Young Master,” Alfred continued, his eyes glinting with obvious approval, “you appear much stronger than during your last visit. Your potential has grown remarkably—perhaps as terrifying as the Master’s own development was at your age. I’m certain he will be pleased with your progress.”
Alaric showed no visible reaction to the mention of his father’s potential approval, offering only a simple nod of acknowledgment at Alfred’s kind words.
“Now then, if you’ll allow me to escort Lady Emma and Young Miss Selene to the main sitting room where they can rest comfortably, I’ll then guide you to meet with the Master in his private office.”
Alaric’s expression darkened immediately. “Tell the old man that she’s coming with me to the meeting, or our deal is canceled entirely.”
Alfred’s face showed a moment of concern, clearly understanding the complications this would create, before he sighed with resignation. He had hoped that this family meeting could proceed more smoothly, but such hopes were rarely realized in this household.
“Very well, Young Master. Both of you may follow me to the office.”
Emma gave Selene a quick, reassuring pat on her back before settling into one of the luxurious sofas in the sitting room, prepared to wait however long their business required.
Alfred began walking toward the mansion’s deeper corridors. The two siblings followed in silence until they arrived outside an imposing set of double doors crafted from dark wood and reinforced with ornate metalwork.
“Young Master Alaric,” Alfred announced formally, “the Master has accepted your request. You may both enter.”
Alaric nodded curtly, then reached over to gently take his sister’s hand with his right while pushing open the heavy door with his left—a gesture of protection that didn’t go unnoticed by Selene who felt warmth in her heart.
The office beyond was vast and overwhelming, its walls lined floor to ceiling with an incredible collection of treasures, weapons, and artifacts from across multiple orders. Swords of the highest quality hung alongside mysterious relics, each item conveying its own story and power. Despite the sheer volume of valuable objects, the space didn’t feel cluttered—every piece had been meticulously placed, as if the entire room served as a museum of conquest and achievement.
Alaric and Selene ignored the impressive displays entirely, focusing their attention on the massive throne-like chair positioned behind a large desk, its high back currently turned toward them.
“Alaric,” came a voice from the chair, “You remain as stubborn as ever. But I suppose I cannot fault you for that trait—you inherited it from me, after all.”
“Old man,” Alaric said, his tone severing any pretense of familial warmth. “I’m not here for empty pleasantries. Let’s handle our business efficiently. Give me the Spirit Art manual you promised, and we’ll leave. I’m sure you have matters far more important than your own offspring.” “Is this how you address your father, son?” The voice carried mild amusement. “Well, no matter. Truth be told, I have no desire for that thing to remain in my house any longer than absolutely necessary anyway.”
It was unknown whether the man meant the item, or Selene.
“However, before I transfer the manual to your possession, I require both of you to enter into a blood pact with me.”
“Old ma-”
“I’m speaking, child!” His voice suddenly turned colder, silencing Alaric, making his body shudder reflexively. Selene’s eyes widened in fear, and her heart skipping several beats, her knees barely held her, it was Alaric’s hand that did.
