Chapter 279 Corin The Base Lord, New Class To Copy
Moon returned to the sanctuary alongside Yara, though they weren’t together. Yara was at the Rocketer base where she would remain for her own training and advancement, whilst Moon was at a different base.
Although they were no longer together, Moon felt confident about Yara’s safety. The people in the base all knew she was part of his group, which meant they wouldn’t dare risk harming someone under his protection. As for the local beast threats, her new equipment purchases had elevated her capabilities enough to handle the strongest A-Rank creatures effectively.
S-rank beasts remained beyond her current abilities, but that was completely understandable given that she hadn’t yet met her evolution requirements. She was making steady progress at an appropriate pace.
As Moon exited the portal into this new base, he was immediately approached by a group of guards led by an imposing figure.
The man was massive, easily one of the largest humans Moon had encountered, with a buzz cut and bulging muscles that strained against his shirt. Although Moon was considered tall, he only reached this giant’s broad shoulders.
Yet despite the dramatic physical disparity, the large man’s demeanor was more than respectful as he addressed Moon.
“Excuse me, sir. Are you known as Moon?” he asked with formal courtesy, his deep voice filled with deference.
Those with true understanding of power recognized that physical size meant little compared to actual capability. Moon’s aura alone was enough to communicate exactly who held the real advantage between them.
Moon could instantly tell that the man knew that he was Moon, but was simply asking out of courtesy.
“I am,” Moon replied simply.
“Sir, I’m Lieutenant Harris. The base lord has heard of your arrival and would be deeply honored if you would accept his invitation to join him for refreshments. He wishes to properly welcome someone of your distinguished reputation.”
Moon gave his status a quick mental glance, considering his current objectives and timeline. He had a few days worth of time remaining before reaching his destination, and there was potential value in this encounter beyond simple pleasantries.
“I’ll accept the invitation,” Moon decided.
While he wasn’t particularly interested in forming social connections with this base lord—the facility was average-sized at best, meaning its leader was likely just moderately above typical awakener capabilities—there was still one specific benefit Moon could potentially extract from the meeting.
He wanted to learn a new class during his journey, and the most efficient method was copying classes from powerful individuals rather than random people he came across.
The challenge was selection. Moon didn’t want to waste his class slot on weak abilities from unremarkable awakeners.
‘If only my appraisal skill worked on humans as well as objects,’ Moon thought in pity. ‘If it could reveal people’s classes and skill sets, I could make informed decisions about which abilities were worth copying. That would be incredibly valuable.’
His current class skill only provided him with information about the class after it had been copied, which was not that efficient when you didn’t have enough information about the person you were copying.
As it stood, he’d have to rely on observation and conversation to determine whether this base lord possessed anything worth acquiring.
But even that was better than copying random abilities from unknown awakeners he encountered in the wilderness.
“Lead the way, Lieutenant,” Moon said, following the massive man deeper into the base.
Unexpectedly, the base lord met him halfway through the facility—an honor he hadn’t extended to any previous visitor.
Even more surprising was the base lord’s physical body. The man was actually larger than Lieutenant Harris, which Moon hadn’t thought he would see anytime soon.
The base lord had chosen to approach Moon personally because he was concerned that having Moon escorted all the way to him might be viewed as disrespectful treatment of someone with such an extraordinary reputation.
Inside the base lord’s administrative building, they entered an impressive banquet room where a massive wooden table had been laden with a large spread of food and drinks—clearly prepared specifically for this meeting.
The room contained only the base’s most elite personnel: a total of six people including Moon and the base lord, with the other four being the base’s lieutenants—the individuals closest to the base lord in both rank and trust.
“Sir Moon, on behalf of our entire community, I want to express our profound admiration for your recent achievements. What you accomplished will be remembered for generations to come.” Said the base lord named Corin.
The other lieutenants nodded their agreement, echoing similar praise for Moon’s unprecedented success.
Moon acknowledged their words with polite nods, accepting them without false modesty but also without arrogance. Although the words didn’t mean anything to him, he had heard it too much now.
He sampled some of the food—which was quite good—but after only a few bites, he set down his utensils.
“Thank you for the hospitality, but I don’t want to take up too much of anyone’s time,” Moon said directly. “Tell me, Base Lord, how can I help you?”
The Corin’s smile stiffened slightly, clearly realizing that Moon had seen through the pleasantries to recognize this was more than a simple social meeting.
“As expected, you’re very perceptive,” Corin admitted with a rueful chuckle. “I do indeed have a favor to request, and naturally we would compensate you appropriately for your valued assistance.”
He leaned forward, his expression becoming more serious.
“There’s a nest of powerful A-Rank beasts on the northern side of our territory that has been causing significant problems for our community. We’ve struggled to deal with them effectively, and their presence is making it extremely difficult for our base to prosper and expand.”
Corin gestured toward a map on the wall.
“If you could help us clear this threat, we would pay you one million dollars. Additionally, you could keep two-thirds of all loot recovered from the nest. Our lieutenants could accompany you to provide support during the operation too.”
Moon remained silent for a long moment, his expression thoughtful.
