- Chapter 908 - 908: Abandoned Village?

“Aaaahhhh!”
Nathan looked down. The main chamber was quite long, considering they had to climb almost two kilometers (1.2 miles) before reaching the peak.
The main chamber was quite huge. In fact, it was the size of the magma pool they saw on the top.
There was nothing he could see as of yet other than the main vein, but it would change soon, especially if they delved deeper and deeper.
Selena was the first one to react to save everyone. She summoned her chains and grabbed everyone by the waist before having Risa pull her up and gradually slowing down.
“This is scary. Even if I’m a summoner, I feel like I will die if I fall from this high.” Flora gasped for air.
“Well, it’s fine, isn’t it?” Sera smiled wryly. “But where is the entrance?”
“I didn’t notice anything.” Noelle shook her head.
“There’s nothing on the side either. I guess we can only continue to descend to figure out something.” Alavenya pointed down.
Nathan had been silent this whole time, recalling information about the volcano. Unfortunately, he wasn’t a nerd who studied such a thing in-depth. The only thing that he could think of was the basic image of a volcano.
‘All I know is that this is the main vent of the volcano. Below us is the magma chamber, but if there’s no more magma, I guess we can go down. If not, there might be some side vents that we can explore.
‘There is not much information from the book. It feels like Charlotte didn’t help build this place directly. Maybe there’s something going on, but we can only try it…’
After some consideration, Nathan said out loud, his voice echoing in the main tunnel. “Let’s go down.”
Selena nodded as Risa slowly lowered their altitude.
Meanwhile, Nathan instructed Jinwu, “Go first. I want you to check some side vents and see if there’s anything there.”
Jinwu dove at high speed, leaving everyone behind.
It took him only three minutes before he returned to him.
“This is an extinct volcano. I have seen the inactive magma chamber below. There’s no magma, and the temperature is quite normal. However, there seems to be something inside there, so if you continue going down, you will be able to see it.”
Nathan confirmed it and relayed the order to Selena and Risa. “Keep going at this pace. We will head down without making any turn. Make sure everyone is ready for any attacks. We don’t know what kind of creature is waiting for us below.”
With Nathan’s order, Risa took 6 more minutes before they could see a huge magma chamber. There wasn’t much light this deep, so Jinwu and Flora’s light spirit went ahead, using their power to brighten the magma chamber.
As expected, the main vent immediately grew, showing a huge cave underneath the mountain.
This huge space looked artificial, especially when they saw a lot of buildings around it. It was as if there was a madman building a village in this kind of place.
Most buildings were already ruined due to the passing time, but there was actually a trace of destruction that didn’t seem to come naturally.
There might be some aliens hiding in the area, so all of them raised their guards.
Nathan pointed at a spot, signaling Risa to let them land there.
“This is the place?” Alavenya looked surprised. “What kind of insane person would live in this place?”
“He probably has a flying familiar that can take him in and out easily. Besides, he’s the greatest explorer, so his strength must be pretty high,” said Flora, while observing the area.
Nathan raised his hand and clenched his fist. “Lower your voice. It’s echoing here. For now, summon your familiars. There’s a chance something is still living here. Investigate the area while being careful. We’ll split up into three groups. Alavenya with me, Selena with Sera, and Flora with Noelle.”
They nodded. They divided the group into three, with Nathan and Alavenya heading to the left, specifically the nearest building around them. Nathan summoned Anubis, Fenrir, and Mae just in case, while Jinwu maintained his position in the cave’s ceiling to light up the entire area.
Nathan couldn’t help but ask, “Alavenya. If it were you, how many people do you think once lived in this place?”
“How many?” Alavenya squinted her eyes. “Not many. In fact, he might be alone.”
“Your reason?”
“See that building?” Alavenya pointed to a building on their right. It was supposed to be the first destination of Flora and Noelle.
“Yes?”
“That’s the only building that looks like it’s used to rest. Since that building is small, it shouldn’t be for a lot of people. However, there might have been a different aesthetic in the past, so there might be another building for housing, but this is just a first guess from what I can see right now. There’s a chance he lived alone.”
Nathan nodded in understanding. “Even if he’s alone, there are still familiars beside him.”
“Indeed.”
Their destination was a three-story building that stretched at least 20 meters (66 feet) to each side. It was a massive building for a single person, but it would be different if this were a research building.
Mae and Fenrir checked the danger inside with their instinct, making sure there were no traps or illusions that Charlotte left behind.
Once they reached the building, they could see a small plaque still attached to the side of the entrance.
“Knowledge is a power, information is a weapon, and history is a teacher. Those who seek knowledge will gain wisdom, those who seek information will find the truth, and those who create history will find immortality.”
“What a bold statement…” Nathan smiled. “But even if you etch your name in history, it won’t make you immortal. Even history will disappear if the kin that protect that history go extinct.
“Life is fleeting, history is bound to be forgotten, and immortality is just a legend. I wonder if there’s anything immortal in this world.”
Alavenya was startled by that sudden profoundness in Nathan’s words, but it was rather logical.
