Chapter 826: The Emperor is Awake
Nothing on the outside had changed. The burning city was still breaking apart around them. Black stone cracked under falling debris, flames spread through the lower streets, and the air remained hot despite the cold wind. Above her, Nox and the First Born were still locked in place, their weapons pressed together in the sky as dark power and crimson fire twisted around them.
At that moment, Emerald stepped back as another shockwave rolled across the street. Dust hit her face. She looked toward the castle behind them. The noise from the fight was growing worse by the second.
“It seems I will have to move without him,” she muttered, brushing ash from her shoulder.
She had no intention of standing there and letting Nox do all the work even though he instructed her to do so. She wanted to play her part.
With the way the battle was unfolding, if they continued to tear apart the capital, then the monster inside that castle might open his eyes before any of them reached him.
And this was something she wanted to avoid. Facing the First Born and the Emperor at the same time was not something she wanted.
Emerald made her decision at once. Her figure blurred, and she shot toward the castle entrance. Heat followed her from the burning streets, but the moment she crossed into the castle, the air turned colder.
There was no light. The only source of light came from red crystals set into the walls. Her heels tapped against the black floor as she moved through long hallways lined with carved pillars. The silence inside the castle felt suffocating compared to the chaos outside.
However, she kept moving as though she had been there multiple times.
The deeper she went, the heavier the pressure became. It did not feel like Nox’s power or the First Born’s. It was profound and ancient.
Emerald’s hand moved to the dagger at her waist instinctively as she muttered, “So that’s where they hid you.”
After several turns, she reached a pair of huge black doors. Faint red light spilled through the edges. The air near them was cold enough to make her breath turn faintly white. She pushed the doors open and stepped inside.
The chamber beyond was vast and dark, lit by rows of low red lamps. At the center stood a raised platform, and on it lay a figure on a long black bed covered in heavy dark cloth. Even from the doorway, Emerald knew that had to be the Demon Emperor.
But she did not take a second step.
Two figures were already waiting between her and the platform.
Both were demon generals, tall and broad, wearing dark armor etched with glowing lines. One held twin curved blades, his mouth twisted in a mocking grin. The other carried a thick spear and had a colder face, his golden eyes fixed on her without blinking.
The one with the blades gave a low laugh. “The First Born was right. Someone actually dared to come for the Demon Emperor. But who would have thought it would be none other than a low life succubus.”
Emerald’s expression did not change. She was already used to this. These words would have hurt the younger her, but not anymore.
Without bothering to share words with the demons looking at her, she moved.
Her first strike went for the spearman’s throat, but he twisted fast and blocked with the shaft of his weapon. Sparks burst as Emerald’s dagger scraped across it. At the same time, the second general came from the side, both curved blades cutting toward her ribs. Emerald bent back just enough to avoid the first, caught the second with her free hand, then kicked him hard in the chest.
The spearman lunged again without pause. His weapon shot forward, forcing Emerald to turn sideways as the point tore through a section of her sleeve. She answered with a wave of dark violet energy from her palm. The blast smashed into his armor and drove him into a pillar, cracking the black stone apart.
Steel rang again and again. Red lamps shook. The cold air trembled under each clash. Emerald moved between both generals with practiced, elegant steps as she dodged, struck, and turned. The blade general came at her wildly, slashing fast enough to leave silver streaks in the dim light, while the spearman attacked with colder precision.
“Fucking bitch,” the blade general sneered, circling her. Blood ran from the corner of his mouth.
Emerald, still maintaining that cold expression on her face, snapped her fingers.
Dark charm energy burst from the floor beneath him. For a split second, his body froze. That was all she needed. Emerald stepped in and drove her dagger under his chin. The point came out through the back of his neck. His eyes widened before his body collapsed.
The second general roared and thrust his spear with both hands. Emerald turned, but the attack still grazed her side and tore part of her dress. He pressed forward at once, boots hammering the floor. Emerald gave ground for three steps, then suddenly moved inside his reach.
His eyes widened. Her elbow smashed into his jaw. Before he recovered, she caught the spear shaft, twisted it out of line, and dragged him forward. Her dagger plunged once into his chest, then again, then a third time straight through his eye. His body jerked and went still.
Silence returned to the chamber.
Emerald exhaled slowly and flicked blood from her dagger. The red lamps burned quietly. Behind her, the distant rumble of battle still echoed outside. She stepped over the fallen generals and walked toward the raised platform.
The Demon Emperor lay there unmoving, his face pale, his long dark hair spread over the black cloth beneath him.
Emerald looked down at him with open disgust.
“So this is the great Emperor,” she said coldly.
She spat on his face and then raised her dagger, angled the tip toward his chest, and drove it down.
But even before the dagger could connect, something shocking happened.
The Emperor’s eyes suddenly snapped open.
