Chapter 2239: The two of you have a history together, correct?
“My toy is finally here~”
The instant Vexarion heard those words, he… froze.
For a heartbeat, he couldn’t understand what he was hearing. Every core of his being tried to deny it, twist it into something else, or pretend it was only an echo of trauma, a memory that had followed him too far.
But…
It didn’t matter.
He could try to deny it however much he liked, but it wouldn’t change the reality.
And as if she wanted it to sink in…
“See? I told you he would come on his own if we use this.”
Another woman with long white hair and purple eyes, standing beside that monstrous woman, commented with a playful smile on her face.
“You wasted so much time finding him. You should have listened to what I was saying beforehand.”
The woman rolled her eyes with a cute pout, but her playful words… crushed Vexarion’s entire world.
Come on his own…?
What did that mean…?
Vexarion’s mind began running wild as more and more thoughts popped up.
He had run away. He did not know how long he had been on the run, but for the last few weeks—or at least days—all he did was run, and he ran with all his might.
Sure, this monster was strong in ways he couldn’t even imagine, but even then, the Anomaly had given him quite the lead and… in his mind, Vexarion was quite positive that he had left the crazy woman behind.
And considering how… strange this region of the Universe was, finding him shouldn’t be easy, even for a monster like her.
And it was all true. For weeks, Sharnoth couldn’t find him.
Then…
Did it mean… like that woman said… instead of finding him, they… used that recording to summon him instead…?
Didn’t that mean… he ran to his nightmare… on his own?
And as if to confirm that—
That crazy woman who was currently staring at Vexarion with her intense, crimson eyes… she grinned.
That same grin…
The grin that had watched him die.
The grin that clapped when his bones were crushed.
The grin that called his screams music.
Then, the crazy woman spoke.
“You were right.”
“I told you~”
The other woman shrugged.
“I shouldn’t be praising myself like this, but I am a little bit of a genius myself.”
“Thank you. It is thanks to you that I finally found my toy~”
Sharnoth replied.
She was clearly addressing the woman standing next to her, but her eyes were still on him, and it wasn’t just her. The rest of the women present… they were all staring at him and…
And he recognized them.
The group had become too popular for him to not know about them.
The Leander Family.
The mercenary group that helped Sharnoth before, the mercenaries that every mercenary in the Universe had heard about because of the absurd rate at which they cleared their missions and rose in the rankings.
Of course, that was all in the past. Now it wasn’t just the mercenaries who knew about them; every being in the Universe knew.
The connection between the Anomaly, the Chain Breakers, and the Leander Family had already been made. The entire world knew the Leander Family was with the Anomaly. Everyone knew they were… a Universal threat.
And now…
They were all standing before him.
But to Vexarion—
Their presence did not matter.
His eyes…
His eyes were only focused on her.
Standing behind the Veil that covered the entire space, behind Seraphielle’s golden radiance, the woman who hovered in the space barefoot, her long grey hair drifting even though there was no wind flowing here and…
Vexarion’s breath caught in his throat.
His lungs stopped moving.
His wings, still spread behind him, went stiff like stone.
“No…”
The word slipped out of him without permission.
It was the sound of a man who had pushed his body past its limits multiple times to travel through a maze, only to find himself circling back to the beginning.
And Sharnoth…
She just tilted her head and—
Her grin widened.
“You actually dared to run away.”
She spoke, and those words sent tremors down Vexarion’s spine.
“You are a bad toy~”
Sharnoth spoke, her crimson eyes shining even more intensely.
“And bad toys need to be punished, don’t you think?”
She asked.
Her voice was soft and playful, almost… gentle.
And that only made it worse.
Vexarion’s knees buckled.
His instincts screamed at him to move, to attack, to fly, to do something.
But his mind—
His mind remembered too much.
The claws.
The slow tearing.
The way his heart was crushed in her palm, multiple times.
The way he had died, and then woke up again, whole, and then died again.
And again.
And again.
His stomach twisted violently.
Golden bile rose in his throat and—
“Kkhawwrrkkk!!”
He gagged, coughing hard as he spat outside, and his body seemed like it collapsed, having no energy to do anything.
But…
But even that felt meaningless.
Because the moment he lifted his head again, she was still there.
It was not a hallucination, nor an illusion.
It was real.
Real enough to… break him.
“No…”
He whispered again, his eyes, his hands, his entire body shook. He backed away without even realizing it and kept stepping back.
One step.
Then another.
And another.
Like distance could save him.
Like… space meant anything.
Like he wasn’t… already trapped.
His mind began to scream.
Run.
Run.
RUN.
But… where?
Where was he supposed to go?
He had been running for weeks, maybe even months, but he still couldn’t find anything familiar. He visited worlds, saw creatures he had never once seen before. Even if it was a newly formed region, it still didn’t make sense for it to be… this absurdly large unless…
Unless he had been thinking wrong about it the whole time.
Maybe…
This wasn’t a newly formed region.
Maybe it was something else entirely, a place he… he could never leave no matter how much he tried.
And that only made sense.
Even the Light Borns, the beings known for the absolute nature of their strength, were unable to find their way out once the Anomaly took them away. How was he supposed to do what couldn’t be done in the first place?
It was impossible.
He was hoping for the impossible.
It was nothing more than wishful thinking.
Yes.
Vexarion, who, for who knows how long, had been running without thinking of giving up, ready to go against all possible odds if it meant he could escape…
was now breaking.
“No…”
But then—
In his desperation, his expression hardened, and he took out all his call artifacts. Maybe… maybe… they were working now.
Maybe she could hear him!
Without waiting, he lifted the call artifact with trembling fingers, like a drowning man lifting a broken rope, and poured all his energy into them.
His veins flared gold, his halo burned above him, even the artifacts began to shine, not because they were being activated, but because the amount of energy being poured into them was too much.
But…
Nothing happened. Putting extra energy wouldn’t change anything.
The artifacts did not work.
“Work…”
Vexarion begged, his voice cracking.
“Work, damn you…”
He cursed.
But then…
“You aren’t thinking of running away from the punishment, are you?”
He heard Sharnoth’s voice again and flinched. He lifted his head to look at her, but the moment he did, he realized the woman was already standing right next to him and was now extending her palm towards him.
He tried to dodge, but the woman knew his movements and his patterns a little too well for him to do anything, so she grabbed him in an instant and—
“AAAGGGGGHHHH!!!”
He screamed as Chaos Energy poured into his body, corrupting his own energy and burning his entire body with agonizing pain in the process until…
He could no longer hold on anymore and…
He perished.
And the next instant—
Shadows covered his body, only to rebuild it again, bringing the dead Vexarion back to life.
“Haaaahh… Haaahhh… Haahhhh…”
The Aurendor Progenitor stared at the dark, hollow sky above him, his body trembling in fear of what was about to come and just like that—
The torture began again.
Once again, the Herald of Justice was killed again and again, every time in a different way, each seemingly more agonizing than the other. The man tried to fight back, run, beg, or call for his allies multiple times while screaming in agony, but it didn’t change anything.
The cycle continued endlessly until…
Vexarion broke down again.
Both his mind and body reached a condition where they no longer reacted to anything that happened outside until suddenly—
“Haaahh… I am bored now~
The toy’s no longer fun.”
The crazy woman yawned.
Then, she clapped her hands and summoned someone. The one who was summoned walked out with his head hung low, but the instant Vexarion saw him, his expression changed—
It was Ythric.
His closest aide back in Aurendor.
The moment Sharnoth saw Vexarion’s reaction, she grinned.
“Recognize him?”
She asked directly. Vexarion’s eyes turned towards her and then back to his subordinate. His subordinate, however, seemed a little different. His usually bright eyes now seemed… dead.
It was almost as if he had lost himself and no longer belonged to this world.
And…
He was right.
“This is my new puppet. Seemed quite useful, so I took him, made him into what I wanted, and now he does everything I tell him to.”
Sharnoth laughed as she said those words.
“The two of you have a history together, correct?
Why don’t you catch up?”
She chuckled and then—
“Toy two, take toy one away and put him in a cell. I can’t have him run away again.”
She ordered, and Ythric moved, not even caring about the fact that the man he was about to capture was his previous master.
