Chapter 2241: You didn’t think I was actually helping you, did you?
“I believe this is the exit from this place.”
Ythric spoke, the word exit instantly gripping Vexarion’s attention as Ythric continued.
“I want you to get to the exit and escape.
Then return with reinforcements to get rid of both the Anomaly and the Chaos Heir.”
And Vexarion…
He did not say anything.
But his eyes—
They remained focused on the ’exit’ Ythric had pointed at for a good few seconds. Ythric didn’t say anything either. He let his lord think whatever it was he was thinking and then—
“How do you know that’s the exit?”
Vexarion asked carefully.
He had already tried to escape once and was caught, so he did not wish to make any more mistakes. He wanted to be as thorough as possible now that it was his second and even his last attempt.
But…
“I do not know for sure.”
The answer he received, however, was not what he was looking forward to.
“While most of the focus was on you, Lord, I still had a few eyes on me. I couldn’t move freely; else my pretense would fall.
In these past few weeks, I have been assigned missions that required me to move all around this region, so I know most of it fairly well—most, except this.
None of the missions assigned to me needed me to get here. I assume it is because they fear that our allies might find me and come back with reinforcements.”
He gave his explanation, and while Vexarion wasn’t exactly thrilled after learning that the information he was being provided was merely an assumption, especially when this time he wanted to be as thorough as possible, he…
He had no choice but to accept.
“I understand.”
He nodded as he grabbed the map Ythric gave him. Ythric nodded back, then he turned around, showing his back to Vexarion, and before Vexarion could understand what he was trying to do—
“Now please attack me, Lord Justice.”
Ythric requested. Vexarion frowned in confusion and Ythric—
“Make me lose consciousness. Then kill yourself, recover, and run.”
Ythric then looked at Vexarion one last time and—
“Please, return quickly.”
He literally begged. After all, he too did not know how long he would be able to hold on. The last thing he wanted was to have the same torturous fate as Vexarion.
Vexarion understood that. He understood the risk Ythric was taking by revealing the truth and tricking the Chaos Heir in such a manner. He understood how much bravery was needed to take a step as daring as this and he…
He couldn’t be prouder of his subordinate.
So, just for his subordinate’s sake, a determined expression appeared on Vexarion’s hopeless, defeated face and he nodded with a new shine in his eyes.
Then, he moved just as Ythric told him to. Gathering all the remaining energy in his body, he attacked Ythric to the point he lost consciousness. Then, the Aurendor Progenitor killed himself.
It was… humiliating.
Suicide was considered to be a sign of weakness. This was especially true in the eyes of Eternals, who had already reached the peak of the Universe and were known for their sheer arrogance.
Vexarion himself had laughed at quite a few Eternals who decided to take their own lives, that too, right in front of their families.
And today…
While he held the sword in his hand, prepared to kill himself—he didn’t think about any of that.
He couldn’t care less.
The people’s opinion was the least of his worries. The only thing that mattered was survival.
So—
Pierce
The Herald of Justice plunged his own sword into his chest, piercing his heart as he took his own life.
Thud
His body fell, and in the next second, the shadows surrounded him and his body was reformed again—as good as new.
It was a feeling he had gotten so used to that it now felt disgusting. For a good few seconds, he was creeped out by his own body. The deep fear that had settled into his very core kept him on edge all the time, making him think that monster might return anytime now.
And because of that—
Vexarion moved.
Flap
His wings spread wide again as his feet began floating. Then, he took the map in his hands and with another flap of his wings, he flew away, not even looking at the subordinate who had just passed out after his attack.
And just like that, the Herald of Justice ran.
Once again, the hope in his eyes that had dimmed was shining.
Once again, the scenes of returning to Lady Seraphielle and living under her protection became stronger than ever.
Once again, Vexarion, who wanted to die just a few minutes ago, wanted to… live.
But…
This did not last long.
Vexarion flew without stopping for two whole weeks. Since this time he had a map in his hand, he moved forward with a lot more assurance and confidence, and realizing the map in his mind was correct the more he moved only gave him more confidence.
But…
In the end—
After flying for two whole weeks and reaching the so-called ’exit’ point—
What the now excited and hopeful Vexarion saw… shattered his hope again.
[Children of the Universe.]
The same words.
The same voice.
The same face.
Everything that should have put him at ease and given him warmth—it was all there, but…
There was no speck of joy on Vexarion’s face.
Because behind those words, that voice and that face… stood… that monster who…
Who was now grinning at him.
“Oh? You are back again?
That was earlier than I expected.”
The monster commented with a grin as she sat on the chair, placing her bare feet on top of a table. Her crimson eyes stared at Vexarion in amusement.
She was… enjoying the expression that had appeared on Vexarion’s face right now.
That crushed hope.
That despair.
That hopelessness.
That… fear.
Seeing the man who had haunted her entire life—the man who killed her father, destroyed her family and her world, and took everything she cherished away from her—have such a satisfying expression on his face…
It was… a beautiful sight.
A sight that filled the Chaos Heir with endless… happiness.
“Looks like your toy has recovered.”
Just then, another voice was heard.
A voice that instantly got a reaction out of Sharnoth—
“NUX!!”
The woman stood and launched herself in a particular direction, flipping both the chair and the table she was using just now.
Nux chuckled at that behaviour and caught her. The woman wrapped herself around him like a koala and he held her back and began gently stroking her back.
And Vexarion…
He just stared at the sight in front of him in absolute disbelief.
Just… what was happening…?
He couldn’t understand.
This man… wasn’t he the Anomaly…?
From what he understood before, it was the Anomaly who was after this crazy woman. This was the reason he helped him the first time. Then… why did it feel like the crazy woman was the one who was after the Anomaly now?
Why did it all feel so… different…?
“You didn’t think I was actually helping you, did you?”
And just when such thoughts appeared in his head, the Anomaly turned towards him and spoke directly.
“W-What…?”
Those words made Vexarion blink. He didn’t understand how he was supposed to react.
“Did you truly believe I would let the man she hates the most escape in order to make her mine?
Do you take me for a fool?”
The Anomaly asked and Vexarion’s expression changed.
Did that mean that his previous escape was…
“Yes, it was all planned.”
Before the words could even come out of his mouth, Nux answered. Because of his connection, he could easily read Vexarion’s thoughts anytime he wanted. This was one of the many reasons Vexarion could never actually outsmart any of them.
He had lost his independence the moment he was devoured.
As for Vexarion…
Hearing the word ’planned’ made him feel like his entire world had… collapsed.
Then, his mind connected the dots and another possibility appeared in his head. If his first escape was all planned, then what about…
“Yes, that too.”
And once again, Nux, who was reading all his thoughts, nodded again and just then, with a wave of his hand, another being appeared.
It was Ythric.
“Y-You…”
And Vexarion’s eyes widened in disbelief as he collapsed on the ground.
“WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE!?”
He raised his voice. The echo in his voice was so strong that it shook his surroundings, a voice filled with so much intense rage that if Ythric had normally heard it, his body would have flinched and then collapsed from sheer fear. But right now…
He had no reaction at all.
And the reason for that was…
“There’s no point shouting, Vexarion Aurendor.
My puppets do not fear you.”
From the moment he came to Vexarion with the map, to the point he let Vexarion run away—he never was Ythric.
Ythric was never… Ythric.
It was just…
Nux and Sharnoth playing with Vexarion.
An entertaining, almost sickening game that broke Vexarion in ways he never thought was possible.
