The Broken Halo - Chapter 294: The Clan’s Will

Chapter 294: 294: The Clan’s Will
“It is also when a demon does not suppress who or what they are.”
After these words by Instructor Valdin, the class which was already quiet, became even more quiet.
Many students were deep in their thoughts, and one could not help but raise their hand.
“Yes?” Instructor Valdin looked at the male initiate.
The boy lowered his arm.
“If Will is when a demon does not suppress who or what they are, then why does the academy enforce its rules on us?”
“Because of the rules, there are lots of things we cannot do. Rules seems like a thing for humans and gods.”
“Isn’t that why humans and gods have a connection with the Order plane and Order Runes?”
“Shouldn’t we demons be allowed to do what we want? Isn’t that the whole essence of chaos?”
Some initiates began to murmur among themselves and whispers flew left and right.
“Right?”
“I feel like the academy has many rules. I’m not allowed to do as I want.”
“Exactly. I’m always too afraid to fight because I don’t want to be arrested.”
“I saw a fine looking axe in the market, and I wanted to steal it, but there were guards around. If I stole it and they caught me, I would either be heavily fined, or they might cut off my arm.”
“At least you can buy yours with money. For me, I saw a Second Year Initiate with a banging body. I badly wanted to have all of that body. Unfortunately for me, I can’t buy it.”
“You can. Just have enough merits, and ask her how much for a night. As long as you’re rich, you can buy any girl and sleep with any girl.”
“It’s a dude.”
“…”
“…”
“…”
“Uhm… Good luck?”
“Thanks?”
Conversations flew up and down in the classroom, and though, not all conversations were exactly like this, they all agreed with what the male initiate said.
They felt that the academy had too many rules that were restricting them and not allowing them to do as they wished.
Clap
Clap
“Silence.”
The classroom became silent immediately, and everybody’s gaze instantly shifted to their class instructor.
Instructor Valdin looked at the boy who asked the question.
“You’re asking why the academy has so many rules, right?”
The boy nodded.
Instructor Valdin shook his head. “How disappointing.”
The boy froze, and every other Initiate’s eyes widened in disbelief.
“Have you forgotten why you’re here? Have you forgotten what this academy is?”
The boy blinked in confusion. He could not understand where Instructor Valdin was aiming for.
Instructor Valdin clicked his tongue in disappointment, then he swept his gaze across the class.
“This is a clan of assassins, an academy of assassins, a class of assassins.”
His cold voice reverberated across the room, causing nearly everybody to shiver in fear.
“Have you ever seen an elite assassin who is not able to control his or her emotions? Or an elite assassin who has no rules and does whatever he or she wants?”
He paused, and though the initiates could not see his face, they could all feel the bone chilling coldness of his aura.
“We are not like the humans or gods who try to teach you morals and so on, and our laws are not strict in the slightest.”
“If there are no laws that prevent killing another clan member or classmate, I’m very certain that over a dozen of you would have died.”
“The clan made sure to provide slaves whom you can kill, rape, and even torture with very little consequences, and you say that we don’t allow you to do as you want?”
He gestured at Simon who tilted his head with a taken aback expression.
“How many of you have tried to kill him knowing that you would not be severely punished?”
Some glanced at Simon, realizing that in a way, they sort of had freedom to do as they wished in the clan.
“And if you guys are still not satisfied with the fact that the clan provided slaves for you to use and treat to your heart’s content, then just know this.”
“The reason why you cannot behave and act like barbarians is because of the Clan’s Will. It is the Clan’s Will for all of you to follow its rules and regulation.”
“If your Will is not stronger than the clan’s Will… Shut up, listen, and obey to become elite assassins… That’s why you came here after all.”
The class became completely quiet, and everybody’s expression behind their masks was solemn and stoic.
Except for Simon that is.
His expression was completely indifferent.
Nearly a minute later, Instructor Valdin inhaled and exhaled deeply, then he placed his hand behind his back.
He continued the lecture after seeing that majority of the students were calm.
“As I was saying earlier, one of the most important things, if not for the most important thing when it comes to chaos runes is your Will.”
“I’ll break down the relationship between chaos runes and Will so that you guys can understand.”
He paused.
“The first thing you must always do when creating a chaos rune is to clearly define what you want the rune to do in your head. This is called Clarity of Intent.”
“If you do not clearly define what you want the rune to do, the rune would behave erratically and you’ll most likely lose control.”
“Take for example, if a demon creates a chaos fire rune with the intention of burning an enemy, do not think that you’ll definitely form a a fire ball.”
He shook his head while wagging his finger.
“Absolutely not. Maybe for Order Runes, but not for Chaos Runes.”
“Having only an intention to burn the enemy is not defined enough. It’s too vague, and the flame might even spread everywhere and would cause little damage to the enemy.”
“But if your intent is to create a condensed flame that detonates on impact, then you’ll most likely have a fireball.”
