Chapter 304: Follow The Red Dot
[Music: Burn It Down By Daughter]
ARES
“There’s still nothing on Agatha… she’s hiding pretty well, but I have a best guess she’s gonna try to flee the city, if not already.”
Nico’s words were lost to me, fading away before getting the chance to register in my brain. I was blinded by my drive to get to the bottom of this… end it once and for all.
It pained me that it took so long to finally have the guts to do what needs to be done. I’ve been so foolish, letting her reign freely in my mind, unable to break the invisible restraints.
I wish I had done it sooner. I wish I had gotten rid of her a long time ago. No amount of words could ever describe how much I regret my incompetence.
For years, she thrust Adrian in my face, proclaiming that he was mine, using him to get to me, using him for her sick attempts to gain power not just over the underworld but me. When in truth he was never her son to begin with, nor Elias.
Did he know too? That his wife had a child that wasn’t theirs?
It’s factual to presume that Elias knew all this time. The urge to dig the grave and shoot him again was compelling. The only thing I could do now for Athena was find Agatha and make her suffer until her dying breath.
I don’t care how long it takes, I’m gonna make sure she pays for everything she has done.
I had my men in every inch of the city waiting for that one appearance, but there have been none. I made the mistake of letting her slip through my fingers.
Agatha left the hospital a week ago, claiming she needed air, but ever since then, her things had been packed, and every trace of her had been gone.
I don’t fucking care if she leaves the city, I’m gonna hunt her down.
“There’s something else, boss. Something I think you should know.”
Nico’s voice came back to me.
“What?” I asked, distractedly.
“The contact I had in one of the casinos finally came through…” He paused, and I was forced to drag my eyes to him. “We have something on Vixen.”
I narrowed my eyes.
My phone vibrated, and I grabbed it to check. It was my wife. She went to see Athena, so I haven’t heard from her for a while.
I swipe open the message.
Baby: I have a gift for you, honey. Follow the red dot.
Red dot? Does she mean the tracker I have on her?
“Vixen was last seen with Isaac…” Nico continued. “Isaac isn’t someone to follow a stranger that easily. You know what this means, right? This happened three weeks ago… when Athena was not in the city. Who else do you think Isaac must have been involved with?”
The red dot beeped at a location, and I pushed to my feet. “Get the car ready.”
I was already leaving my office before Nico had the chance to say anything else.
When I stepped out of the building, a Ferrari pulled up in front of me. I took the key fob, got in, started the engine, and sped off.
I didn’t wait for traffic, navigating my way through and cutting towards a shortcut, the tires screeching against the asphalt.
The wheels rotated in my hand as I made a sharp turn before balancing and speeding through the cleared road.
I picked up my phone and dialed Catherine’s number, but she wasn’t answering.
I tossed the device towards the passenger side. I stomped on the gas as I accelerated, the world passing me in a blur.
Two hours later, I was already within the grounds of the King’s estate, the gates wide open. It was always close, and men guarded the premises, but I saw none, almost like the whole place had been deserted.
I had a bad feeling about this, especially since this was where the red dot pointed.
What was Catherine doing here? Of all the places, why here?
As I drove through, my eyes instantly snapped to the broad smoke going up into the air. I hit more speed, and in less than a few minutes, I was within the compound, pulling up close to the fountain, and got out.
The entire mansion was burning, everything was burning. The flames were so huge, and the first thought was that this was not a fire outbreak but there was no possible way. This building had stood since my great-great-grandfather, and this was the first time something like this had happened.
It felt like I was staring at a scene right out of a dream, and I almost couldn’t believe it as much as the figure standing right in the center of the chaos.
I could recognize that figure anywhere.
“Baby…”
Catherine slowly turned to me, the wind carrying her red hair. I walked close, checking her for any sign of wounds, but there were none.
Why did I get the feeling that it wasn’t her I had to worry about?
I cupped her face, brushing the hair away, eyes searching to get a read on her, but I couldn’t. She was just as blank as I was.
I turned my gaze back to the burning mansion, my mouth hanging, trying to get a grip on what was going on, but I couldn’t think of anything.
“I pulled the trigger for you, honey.”
My eyes connected with hers. “What?”
“Agatha is gone. You don’t need to worry about her anymore.”
I released her face, a bit taken aback by her words, before I moved my gaze back to the flames. I don’t know how long I stood there just watching everything burn.
I should feel something, after all, it was where I grew up, where I had little memories with my mother, but I don’t feel a fucking thing.
Instead, it felt like a hand holding my heart, and the claws digging in were gone.
