The Innkeeper - Chapter 2111 Lunareth Selaryn

Chapter 2111 Lunareth Selaryn
“Would you believe me if I said she refuses to tell me,” the Innkeeper said with tones of disbelief in his tone. “We can talk about anything, but as soon as we start to talk about her past she’s suddenly ‘unable to answer’. It really makes one even more curious.”
Eclipse was taken aback by the answer, not expecting that.
“Wait, so you don’t know at all? Didn’t you have her checked out before hiring her?” she asked incredulously.
The Innkeeper only chuckled.
“Not really. She’s extremely loyal and helpful as far as the work is concerned, so I didn’t really look into her past. That would be an invasion of privacy – not that I’d be able to leave the Inn and go find out on my own anyway,” he continued. Everything he said was technically true. Even if he left the Inn, it’s not like he could find out, nor had he really tried to find out about Mary’s past. Eclipse gave the Innkeeper a look of disbelief, and then that of respect. “That’s incredibly open minded of you,” she said. “Then again, I suppose it’s a matter of perspective. Since I keep my garden closed off most of the time, I’m too used to knowing everything about whoever enters. You, on the other hand, run an inn, so it’s quite common for you to welcome new and unknown people within your realm.”
Though she said that, she turned her gaze towards Mary and narrowed her eyes.
“You know, I had a very close Celestial friend once,” Eclipse continued as she focused on the group. “That was back in the early days, before the Cosmic Ascendance Spectrum existed, so everyone was quite relaxed about racial issues. Everything was more about personal power rather than racial power. Unfortunately, those were also quite chaotic days, so he did not make it.”
Lex suddenly got a bad feeling, and looked from Eclipse to Mary.
“Do you suspect she is related to your former friend?” he asked, sounding far more casual than he actually was.
“Huh? Oh no, I doubt that,” Eclipse said, shaking her head. “He was one of the founding Celestials. His family line would be quite famous, or should be quite famous – I haven’t really checked so I’m sure. If Mary was his descendant, you would not have needed to ask her as finding out her history would have been quite easy!”
Lex didn’t know how to respond to that. Why was she bringing up random things? Was she feeling sentimental, or was she hinting at things too complex for Lex to notice?
He looked at her, but kept on feeling like she was sad about her friend. Was that even possible? Theoretically it was, but not to the point where such powerful beings would be so immensely affected by that sorrow that they would show it outwardly. Then again, Eclipse was never one for pretense, so if she felt sad, she’d likely openly show it.
Lex mentally flipped a coin to decide, but since that was essentially a pointless endeavor, he gathered up his courage and asked what he had been wondering.
“Do you, perhaps, miss your friend?” the Innkeeper asked softly, his tone filled with compassion. “Do you want to talk about it?”
Eclipse did not immediately respond, instead looking towards Mary and taking in the scene of her being courted from all sides. It seemed that the sight had evoked an old memory, and Eclipse actually spent several hours lost in her memories.
“Back when the universe was first created, everything was brand new. The ground, the sky, the air, the water, all of it. There were no ancient monsters, but there were monsters nonetheless. Even back then, Nuwa was incredibly strong, and together with… with Him she created several new races, all for the purpose of helping her contain the chaos and madness of a newborn universe. Thus, when the Celestials were born, they were born as equals to many others. “But the annals of history record Celestials as heroes, as leaders because even back then, in the age of miracles, they proved themselves exceptional. Back then, I was just a nobody. I was weak – relatively speaking. I was young, and I was ignorant. I made mistakes, as is the right of the young. Yet I also did… incredible things, and thus, I met him.
“Lunareth Selaryn – the creator of the Dao of Moonlight, back during a time when moons did not even exist. He was a remarkable Celestial – wise, intelligent, compassionate. He saved me from my own idiocy, and guided me towards a better path. Unfortunately, the laws of the universe were not so strong back then, and it was much easier for Dao beings to die. The karma he sowed was too heavy, and you know what they say about karma – she’s a bitch.
“I was not able to attend his funeral, not that it matters too much I suppose. Now, it has been so long, and there hardly exists anyone in the universe who remembers him. In fact, it’s been many years since I even thought of him. For some reason, Mary does remind me of him. Maybe you’re right – maybe she is his descendant.”
The Innkeeper didn’t say anything, and instead joined her in looking at Mary. Lunareth Selaryn – a person whom even Eclipse looks up to. What kind of person would he have been?
Much more importantly, had he finally gotten a hint towards Mary’s past? Was she the descendant of this great person? He did not need to specifically go out and check, but it was good to know nevertheless.
At the same time, Lex could not help but think back to the very beginning of the universe. How amazing must it have been. He wondered if there were
systems even back then, or if they came later.
There was so much hidden history in their universe, and so many mysteries. Every conversation with Eclipse was like a sneak peek into some of those mysteries. So many of them enticed his curiosity. It was such a shame that he was weak, and had to keep suppressing his interests. One day, however, he would explore the mysteries of the universe without fear.
