The Innkeeper - Chapter 2129 I just wanted to protect her

Chapter 2129 I just wanted to protect her
Lex nodded as he watched the sanctuary being built. Knowing that it would take years to complete made him feel assured about only using 10 materials for now. While Dao materials were difficult to use up, they were also especially valuable. Between the Butter Knife, his own cultivation and the system requiring Dao materials as payment for anything he wanted to do, he had to be especially calculative about how he acquired these resources.
Dao materials were not things he could get his hands on himself, so it was entirely possible that these would be the last Dao materials he got for a very long time – maybe even until he became a Dao Lord himself. These things were uncertain.
So, until he actually had a personal need for the Dao of Sanctuary, he was not interested in submitting the 40 other Dao materials required to build this thing. Now with that done, Lex planned on going and surveying the Inn personally for a bit, and making sure that everything was actually fine. Regardless of everything he had done, having so many guests trapped inside the Inn was just as big an issue for him as it was for the guests.
He especially needed to be satisfied with his preparations regarding the Inn because he needed to undergo his tribulations, and he had a feeling that he would be facing multiple tribulations all at once again. Even the slightest concern regarding the Inn could serve as a point of distraction for him during the tribulation which could be lethal.
Ordinary tribulations didn’t require his attention, but the Primordial ones were an exceptionally dangerous ordeal that he dared not take lightly even now. He began not by going to any of the guests, but by first checking in on his staff. To be more specific, the kitchen staff that had worked during the tea party. All of them had been exposed to a substantial number of Dao Lords, and he was certain it would have affected them in some way. Fortunately, out of respect for the Innkeeper and fear of Eclipse, the Dao Lords had not acted against them.
The Innkeeper appeared at the cafe near the Crystal Volcano furnace that Orin and he had made, which served as a gathering point for many of the workers. The mood was especially festive when he appeared, and the sudden arrival of the Innkeeper made them all even happier!
After all, by now the workforce of the Inn was massive, yet very few of them had actually seen or met with the Innkeeper.
“Hey, look at that, the Innkeeper has already heard the news and is here to congratulate you,” said Cole, the cook during the tea party, as he slapped Pierre on the back.
Pierre, wearing a look that was half embarrassed and half flattered, quickly made his way through the crowd with a flushed face as he approached the Innkeeper.
“Oh? Is there some kind of special news? Why haven’t I heard about it yet?” the Innkeeper asked, though his usually gentle voice was filled with a teasing tone this time.
The entire cafe was suddenly filled with hooting as they looked at the awkward Pierre and the Innkeeper. Poor Pierre, who even had his ears turned red by now, looked awkward at the floor unable to figure out how to start.
“I… uhh, the thing is… we decided… I mean, no, I mean, I decided that… actually what happened was… she kept watering the plants with lemonade and… she kept using the apron as a cape… and she thought the peacock mounts were obese chickens and… well, I was kind of worried about how she would survive if I wasn’t there to look after her so… so I proposed to Brenda when we came back and…
“And she thought… the proposition was to… marinate me… so I had to explain the difference between marriage and marination… I was really just worried about her and… well, one thing led to another, and so now… I am… I mean, we are getting married… I hope that’s okay…”
Lex looked at the stumbling, bumbling Pierre and did his best to contain his laughter amidst the ‘ooos’ and ‘ahhhs’ that filled the cafe. He naturally knew all about the proposal already, since he was aware of what was happening inside the Inn. To be honest, he could sense that Pierre was the very serious type, and that Brenda was the exact opposite.
He would make sure she didn’t get into too much trouble, and she would make sure he didn’t avoid trouble altogether. After all, what was life without a little flavour in it? As long as they both agreed, he had no objections to it.
“That’s wonderful news, I’m happy for you,” said the Innkeeper as he patted Pierre on the back, encouragingly. “When are you planning on having the occasion?”
Pierre scratched his head, as if feeling awkward about how to respond. “The thing is, I only wanted to marry to look because I was concerned for her, so I didn’t have a big ceremony in mind. Brenda, however, said she wanted to invite her friends and I thought that was fine. I did not realise that meant that… she gave out an invitation to one of the guests at the tea party… and a lot of the guests inside the Inn as well, and so now… the number of guests is too many and… it’s entirely outside my budget…”
Lex froze. What? Who had she invited at the tea party? Dammit Brenda, she really did need Pierre to look out for her.
“Don’t worry about it Pierre, the Umbragard house will sponsor your wedding” said one of the other workers at the cafe.
“No, the Nyxheart will sponsor it!” said another worker.
Since Pierre had joined Umbragard, and Brenda had joined Nyxheart, it made sense that both the houses would want to help them out. Lex no longer cared about that. He was just feeling relieved that he didn’t need to deal with more Dao Lords, so now why did he have to deal with them again? Who exactly had Brenda invited?
At that very moment, inside the Primordial Garden, Harriot and three of the ducks from the Waddle Brigade were standing inside Oaka’s shop, picking out wedding gifts. It was not everyday that they got invited to a mortal’s wedding, so they weren’t sure what would be appropriate gifts.
“What do you think about this Amulet of the Apocalypse?” Harriot asked one of the ducks. “It could make a decent family heirloom – it has the souls of fifteen peak Celestial Immortals trapped within to act as servants for the wearer.”
The duck shook his head.
“Nah, I think this one,” it said, and pointed towards the Hammer of Super
Death.
