The Last Paragon in the Apocalypse - Chapter 1223: First Mission

Chapter 1223: First Mission
Accessing the mission board is pretty straightforward.
All he needed to do was log in to his account, and he could see his current rank along with the list of available missions.
After he finds a suitable mission, he just has to click ’claim,’ and it will be removed from the board and registered under his name.
The system automatically detected his current location and estimated the time needed to reach the mission destination.
Once calculated, some additional time would be added, serving as the grace period for the Hunter to prepare and, if quick enough, complete the mission.
After this period, the Hunter had 10 days to either forfeit or complete the mission. If, after those 10 days, they still held the claim, points would be deducted from their rank daily until they either finished it or unclaimed it.
Of course, there were bonus points for completing missions faster. Naturally, unclaiming a mission also resulted in a point deduction.
This well-designed system is designed to encourage hunters to complete missions on time.
Reading all this, Klaus couldn’t help but see it as something he could work with.
He scrolled through the common missions, which, from what he could see, numbered in the millions.
“The longer I keep scrolling, the more missions are added.”
Eri smiled.
She had earned so much money from Klaus that she had become much friendlier with him. If possible, she would even want to become his personal pilot and roam around with him.
Too bad she has a family to take care of, so going off-world is not in her plans just yet.
But then again, if only she knew she was casually talking with a paragon, someone the heavens would love to kill any second.
“It’s a big star system, after all. There are close to 3,000 planets just in this star system. So hundreds of missions are added every second.”
Klaus nodded.
One thing he discovered after reading the terms of the Mission Hall was that until he reached B-rank as a Hunter, he could only select missions within his current star system.
Klaus didn’t seem to mind. All he wanted were missions, and now he was limited to scrolling through millions of them.
“Most of these missions are just funny. How can you pay 2 million universe coins just to have a hunter find your missing cat? Don’t they have investigators or something?”
Klaus laughed.
He wanted a mission but couldn’t find anything on the Common mission board, so he switched to the Rare mission board.
The common mission board listed missions from the Monarch stage and below. It wasn’t really suitable for an Empyrean.
Of course, if they needed quick money, taking such missions would probably be the fastest and safest option.
“You can use the search box to look for hints of the kind of mission you want. You can search for criminals for which missions about criminals will be populated,” Eri advised, and Klaus nodded.
He chose to follow her advice.
He opened the search box and typed ’dangerous criminals.’ Instantly, the number of missions was reduced to 780,000.
“Well, that narrows it down,” Klaus said, his eyes flashing with determination. Then he scrolled quickly through the list. In no time, he reviewed all 780,000 missions, but only one caught his attention.
He tapped on it to read the details.

[Mission Name]: Hunt the Shadow Butcher
[Mission Rank]: Rare
[Location]: Planet Dravon, 5th orbit of the Dervas Star System
[Target]: The Shadow Butcher – Real name unknown
[Reward]: 900 million Universe Coins + 700 Hunter Points
[Mission Description]:
The Shadow Butcher is a notorious assassin responsible for over 2,000 confirmed kills across six planetary systems. He was last seen on Planet Dravon, in the city of Kaldris.
The target is extremely dangerous and can manipulate shadows to conceal himself even in broad daylight.
He is said to have mastered a forbidden art known as Umbravore, allowing him to feed on the life force of his victims through their shadows.
Reports claim that he once single-handedly annihilated the royal family of Ardentis and vanished before the warrior’s response. Attempts to apprehend him have all failed, with those sent either disappearing or being found drained of blood and energy.
[Mission Requirements]:
Hunter Rank: C and above
Completion Time: 15 Days
Failure Penalty: -150 Hunter Points
[Additional Notes]:
Caution is highly advised. The Shadow Butcher is a master of assassination, illusion, and stealth. Rumors suggest he was once part of a shadow order known as the Veiled Blades, a dangerous group said to have worked with a demon lord in the past.
Note: Bonus points will be awarded upon completion if the mission is completed within the allocated time.

To Klaus, this mission was exactly what he needed. It would take him to a different planet and on a chase after an elusive shadow.
He didn’t know exactly what the assassin could do or how strong they were, but he knew for a fact he would enjoy it. He had been bored for a while, so this was going to be a good one.
He would finally get to use his shadow abilities since he hadn’t had time to explore that part of himself. He had some powerful shadow techniques from the 4th and 7th incarnations, so he was ready to chase through the shadows.
’Interesting, looks like this mission is for C-rank Hunters and above. Makes me wonder how much I will earn as a bonus if I manage to complete it on time and as an F-rank Hunter.’
Klaus smiled and tapped on Claim Mission.
[Mission Accepted: Hunt the Shadow Butcher]
’According to my Hunter page, I need 500 points to become an E-rank Hunter. So completing this mission is a must.’
“Have you gotten one?” Eri asked, and Klaus nodded with a smile.
“I did, and it is a good one.”
Eri also smiled. “I guess I should say happy hunting. And please be careful. Most missions, from what I’ve heard, can be more dangerous than they appear to be.”
“I will be more than careful then.”
Klaus continued browsing for his second mission. However, it didn’t take long for them to arrive at the Docking Bay where their ship was.
“You will have to tap your bank card against the screen at the door. That will pay for your parking space. You can also press the reserve button and reserve that parking space for as long as you want.”
Since Eri was off duty, she couldn’t take them inside, so they had to walk back to their ship.
“Thank you, Eri. I will call you whenever I return to Mechalon.”
“I will be sure to always make time for you.”
After everything was said and done, Eri turned her car around and left. After Klaus paid for his fees, information, and tips, Eri earned about 4 million Universe coins.
She had earned more than she could have hoped for. So she left promptly. After all, with the money now in her account, spending some good time was for the best.
Klaus and Maud started walking back to their ship. He had spent quite a good time in Mechalon. However, he most certainly would be having a blast on the next planet he would be finding himself on.
His Hunter career had just begun, and since Klaus wanted to make sure this path led him to greatness, he would slowly keep moving to the Beast Universe while handling one mission after another.
“Should the ladies, too, become Hunters?” Klaus asked, addressing Maud. The Death Agent looked at him for a few seconds before turning away.
Klaus just smiled, but then he stopped in his tracks, causing Maud to stop.
Klaus then turned to a shadow 20 meters away and smirked. “I never knew I would live long enough to see a True Immortal stalking a Mortal.”
