The Mech Touch - Chapter 7262: The Devouring Ekstrom Goliaths

The Fight between the Divine Arsonist and the Ekstrom Goliath kicked off without exchanging any banter first.
This was not too unusual during the Red War, but it was also not unheard of for particularly martial phase gods to taunt and engage human ace pilots as worthy adversaries.
Even if they did not exchange any words, their strikes and their defensive maneuvers already conveyed their mutual respect towards each other.
Yet when the Ekstrom Goliath launched its opening strike by letting loose an enormous barrage of organic missiles, it did so with the sole determination of executing its orders. The alien creature possessed an ugly face that was characterized by a disproportionately large mouth.
It was not designed to smile or convey any particular emotions. Its pitch-black eyes gazed at the Ascended Giant as if the latter was no different the high-ranking mechs that the Goliath Hive had previously fought against.
Though a single biological missile did not give the Divine Arsonist much cause for concern, the quantity was rather big.
Hundreds of them spread out like a flower before slowly converging onto the advancing Ascended Giant.
That was not a reason to give the Divine Arsonist much cause for concern. He thought about activating his flamethrower, but decided it was better to save the propellant.
The Ascended Giant maintained a confident expression as the fleshy missiles struck his spatial shield with unrelenting force!
Though the Divine Arsonist slowed down his advance, by the time the torrent of missiles had been expended, the human phase lord emerged from this initial barrage with not a single scratch on his raiment!
His spatial barrier remained intact, though it looked a bit shakier than before. It had done its job in a magnificent manner.
“Good exchange.” Ves murmured as he inspected the data in front of a work station. “Those organic missiles are all transphasic, right?”
Lord Richard nodded. “Every megavoribug that we have encountered so far is transphasic. We believe that it is due to the fact that their direct competition relies heavily on phasewater as well. The bodies of phase leaders have them in abundance while all modern high-ranking mechs are composed of transphasic alloys.” “Superdimensional technology is also trending.” Ves added. “That is the supercharged version of phasewater technology. I don’t think the mutated voribugs have access to superdimensional matter, so the only way their Goliaths can remain competitive is to invest heavily into organic phasewater applications.”
Red humanity gained access to superdimensional matter through Ketis.
The latest haul was quite considerable and should be enough to convert many peak ace mechs and god mechs into superdimensional versions of themselves.
The native aliens had their own source of superdimensional matter. Ves and other people even suspected that the phase whale race mastered the ability to generate superdimensional matter, but they had yet to find any proof.
Whatever the case, Ves did not think it was likely that the mutated voribugs could get their hands on any superdimensional matter aside from plundering it from defeated enemies, so their Goliaths had to rely on other solutions to defend against superdimensional arms.
Before the Divine Arsonist could get close enough to plunge his superdimensional- tipped spear into the Ekstrom Goliath’s formidable body, hundreds of thousands of voribugs left the giant creature’s side and began to approach the advancing Ascended Giant.
The Divine Arsonist grinned beneath his fully covered raiment. “I have been waiting for this! Taste my flames, you filthy bugs!”
His large 1.5x flamethrower had already been fully primed. Numerous safety measures ensured that its propellant remained safe from accidental ignition even if the weapon got jostled or damaged.
The nozzle in front began to spray a fiery orange spurt of flames that engulfed all of the voribugs in a wide 160 degree cone!
“Hahahahaha! Burn! Burn! Burn!”
The spreading heat and the sight of so many burning bugs stimulated the Divine Arsonist!
He derived a strong sense of satisfaction from starting up a conflagration that quickly snuffed out the lives of so many voribugs within a dozen seconds.
The custom flamethrower commissioned by Tamsham O’Reilly had not been designed to eradicate bugs, but it appeared well-suited for the job.
The Ascended Giant could easily adjust the width of the nozzle to disperse its flames or concentrate it into a narrow jet.
Naturally, it was incredibly stupid to do the latter. He had widened the nozzle to the limit, allowing the fiery flames to disperse right in front of the Faceless Giant.
Though the flames burned up a lot of voribugs, the enemy did not appear to be discouraged.
The swarm quickly adapted to this attack by dispersing and flanking the Divine Arsonist. While the Ascended Giant was still able to burn up a lot of bugs, the problem was that he was unable to do so as effectively as before.
The flamethrower used up the same amount of propellant, but only burned a fraction as many bugs as before.
The Divine Arsonist eventually decided to pull his finger away from the trigger.
This immediately emboldened the voribugs and caused them to converge directly towards their enemy!
The Divine Arsonist’s spatial barrier blocked their passage and prevented their bites and claw strikes from inflicting much damage.
The damage inflicted by all of the voribugs was much less than the organic missiles launched a short time ago.
This was because the cannon fodder bugs did not contain any phasewater.
Attacks devoid of empowerment derived from phasewater or superdimensional matter tended to perform especially poorly against transphasic energy defenses.
However, that did not mean the Divine Arsonist could ignore the swarming bugs!
It only took a few seconds for a thick layer to form around his spatial barrier. Not a single gap existed as bug after bug enveloped his shielded form like it was a hive!
The combined mass of this ballooning organic ball started off small, but expanded quickly to the point where the flight of the Ascended Giant became affected.
Not only that, but the visual blockage along with the messy organic signals generated by so many bugs almost completely blinded the Divine Arsonist!
However, before this flesh ball could continue to hinder the Ascended Giant, the Divine Arsonist activated his flamethrower and spun around so that he could spread his white- hot flames in every direction.
A huge amount of bugs instantly burned into a crisp!
The Divine Arsonist managed to kill so many voribugs that not a single insect clung to his spatial barrier at this time.
Yet just as he was about to enjoy the view, the Ekstrom Goliath was already charging straight in his direction!
The gigantic bug did not let the sacrifice of so many voribugs go to waste. He had already begun to charge forward. With his wicked horn pointed straight at the Ascended Giant, it was clear that he would not stop until he rammed it directly through its target! The Divine Arsonist grinned!
“So be it! Let’s see whose horn is sharper!”
He put away his flamethrower and began to charge forward while bracing his spear.
The Divine Arsonist had great confidence in his weapon, especially after it had received a relatively small but incredibly crucial superdimensional upgrade.
The observing humans watched the two combatants carefully.
“He’s underestimating his adversary and overestimating his weapon.” Ves mildly complained. “I am not sure what a Level 7 Goliath is capable of, but any organism that can fight against an ace mech possesses its own advantages.”
“Your Ascended Giant will indeed learn a lesson, but it is one that everyone who fights against the Goliath must learn by themselves.” Lord Richard Brownstone agreed. “The megavoribugs of this Hive are harder to kill than they appear. They also have no sense of honor, at least that we can recognize.”
The Divine Harpoon looked upset. “I told him that he should maintain his distance and observe. He is too impatient.”
“It’s okay.” Ves said. “In any case, his spatial barrier is still intact. That should provide him with enough of a buffer.”
His words rang true more or less.
When the two champions finally collided against each other, they had built up enough power that their collision exerted a lot of force on both sides!
The horn of the Ekstrom Goliath was not only transphasic, but also thick, allowing it to damage and pop the Ascended Giant’s spatial barrier at the cost of shattering it to pieces!
Though the horn quickly snapped apart, the remaining momentum of the Ekstrom Goliath still caused its thick and armored front to slam against the Divine Arsonist’s raiment with a considerable amount of force!
At the same time, the Divine Arsonist’s superdimensional-tipped spear encountered no energy shielding of any kind. Its mid-grade superdimensional tip easily pierced the multiple layers of transphasic exoskeleton layers and easily sank through alien flesh and organs alike!
Yellow-greenish blood spilled from the gap as the spear reached so deep that it had to have pierced something important!
As soon as their collision had passed, the Divine Arsonist quickly withdrew his spear and backed away from his opponent.
He had just inflicted a wound that should have crippled any normal mech or phase lord. Yet when he examined the state of the Ekstrom Goliath, he found to his surprise that the bug no longer seemed injured anymore!
The Ekstrom Goliath had backed off as well. He was currently busy with devouring a large amount of voribugs that willingly flew towards his mouth.
The more biomass absorbed by the megavoribug, the faster his injuries began to heal! The gap in the exoskeleton quickly squirmed before closing up. While the replacement layers still appeared a little weaker and more discolored than the intact exoskeleton matter, it was clear that the Goliath had rapidly closed its wounds!
More biomass likely went into repairing its internal injuries. The condition of the Ekstrom Goliath improved so rapidly that the Divine Arsonist looked utterly astonished.
Although it was not unusual powerful organic enemies to heal their injuried during a fight, the recovery speed demonstrated by the Ekstrom Goliath was frankly ridiculous! “This is the power of the Ekstrom strain.” Lord Richard Brownstone stated in a serious tone. “Out of all of the strains, the Ekstrom version possesses the fastest and most efficient means of converting external biomass into internal biomass. It is difficult to defeat the Ekstrom Goliaths so long as there are enough voribugs around. The Goliath Hive always directs new swarms to them so that they can always have a source of biomass to replenish their body and other resources. If you cannot defeat them with a single decapitation strike, you are in for a long and brutal fight.”
Although the Divine Arsonist was momentarily stunned by this bizarre display, he quickly adjusted.
He began to adjust his weapons. He retrieved his flamethrower from his back but held it with a single hand.
“Since you like to heal so much, let’s see how well you can do so while you are on fire!” The Divine Arsonist quickly narrowed the nozzle of his main weapon before pulling the trigger!
Jets and jets of hotter and more focused flames struck the Ekstrom Goliath!
The megavoribug’s mobility was so poor that it had no chance of evading the flames.
As the Divine Harpoon circled around its enemy, the Ekstrom Goliath’s exoskeleton soon became fully engulfed in flames.
Due to the powerful propellant mixture, the flames not only burned hot, but also lasted for a long time!
The Ekstrom Goliath flailed and tried its best to shake off the flames, but that was an exercise in futility.
The Divine Arsonist took advantage of the situation and began to poke multiple holes into the megavoribug’s exoskeleton.
This not only allowed the flames to spread into the softer parts of the Goliath’s body, but also inhibited its healing capabilities!
What was even more helpful was that the flames significantly hindered the Ekstrom Goliath’s ability to devour the surrounding voribugs!
“Oh no you don’t!”
As soon as the Ekstrom Goliath opened its mouth, a spray of flame directly entered the gap!
