- Chapter 749 - 749: The third day of the development trial (part 2)

Naturally being suddenly enveloped by blue light and more importantly having a message, that she could “read” and understand, despite she not knowing the language in which it was written, made the filly turn her head towards her aunt, Guardian, Kana and the little wyrm.
“Don’t worry, I was also surprised back when I was evaluated, but it’s fine, the blue flaming board is not bad”, said the little girl to help clear the confusion in the filly’s mind.
“Grrr”, with a soft calming growl, Guardian reassured the filly that everything was fine, and so the process could continue, the blue flaming board was actually quite considerate because it waited until the filly stopped trying to resist, before evaluating her, something that seemed to draw the attention of the lynx, but let’s leave that aside for now, the filly couldn’t be blamed for the previous.
Despite their mortal limitations as of current, Kana and all the others are cultivators, so being bathed in lights of different colors when interacting with objects, such as spirit weapons, resources and other treasures, is nothing to fret.
On the other hand, while the animals here are strange, as in they don’t have an ounce of spirit energy in them, and yet display behaviors that one would expect from transcending realm or above spirit beasts, they are ultimately animals whom besides some exceptions like Guardian, had never even seen a human before, let alone a cultivator.
Anyway, after having her body surrounded by dim blue light for a couple of seconds, the process ended and the filly got her grade, one that actually took quite a few people by surprise.
[Calculation completed, the result is “Advanced”, which can be converted into three hundred middle grade merits]
“Woah, she got a similar evaluation as senior sisters Brenda, Amanda and Violet!”, exclaimed a girl from the Black Sword faction, those three were the names of the girls from the Red and Black Sword factions which had reached Iris and Nerissa’s initial former level not too long ago, as for the last one, she was that core disciple from the Purple Lotus, who has had a couple short interactions with Aster and is their strongest representative disciple as well.
The important part here, is that the filly got evaluated as basically the highest notch, below the crème of the crop composed by Aster’s group, which is nothing to look down on.
“The blue flaming board takes more aspects than just “strength” into account, when grading participants…”, mumbled the girl from the Purple Lotus, Violet.
“It makes sense, little Kana told us that she was left in charge of all the little horses and stayed still for hours until senior brother Aster and the others brought the adult horses to where they were hiding”, added the second of the girls whose score was equaled by the filly, namely the girl from the Red Sword, Brenda.
“Fair”, limited to say the one from the Black Sword, Amanda and with that the evaluation of the filly had ended but she still had one more thing left to do, namely pick the manuals she’ll be learning from the exchange monolith.
Speaking of which, a new message was triggered after the evaluation ended.
[Equidae related manuals, items and missions have been added to the exchange and mission monoliths]
Curious instead of confused this time, the filly approached the exchange monolith and a list of sentences which she could read but not understand the meaning of, appeared in her mind, what she did know is that she couldn’t just choose whatever, based on the numbers next to each sentence.
There was nothing better than a practical example to help their newly joined teammate understand what those objects represented, so with Guardian’s help Aster got the attention of the filly, not to mention that all the present people also looked at him.
The reason is simple, Aster had grabbed a machete and was walking towards not a tree this time, but a large… boulder, which has been an eyesore in the eyes of a certain receptionist girl who was planning to have it smashed with pickaxes today.
“Don’t worry about the “names” themselves, sometimes they pay more attention to fanciness or flashiness than to what matters, focus on your instincts to choose, and you’ll be able to do things like this…”, said Aster as he increased the strength of his grip on the handle of the machete, to then slash at the giant boulder.
“Crack!”, upon contact a loud shattering sound echoed through the vicinity, as a clean line formed on the large boulder right at its middle area before the thing split in half.
And here you might wonder why the shattering sound if the boulder was cleanly split in half, instead of breaking due to simple strong physical impact, the answer is simple, that was the machete crumbling apart after being used by Aster, despite the previous, not even a single piece flew in any direction, the broken pieces of the machete simply fell to the ground in “order”, leaving only the handle in Aster’s hand.
“The name of my attack type manual consists in a single word “Absolute”, despite being in the swordsmanship section, it’s the only one that doesn’t contain the word “sword” in its name, and I chose it despite the description clearly stating that it’s grade can either be the lowest or the highest, following my instincts”, said Aster as he opened and closed his right hand a couple of times.
Naturally all the previous was translated for the filly through Kana whose eyes were cutely sparkling due to the previous demonstration, similar to the vast majority of the other girls present as of current, even Guardian had a surprised expression, which one wouldn’t expect to see on a Lynx that has seen other participants before.
“Ahem, let me see for a second”, said Aster as he approached the monolith, he forgot to see what kind of profession would be available for the filly, fun fact the little wyrm had different options when compared to all the other members of the group.
Not because of her race itself, since others who aren’t exactly humans as well, like the ligress girl, Aster, Alice, Sarina and even Kana, had the same options for the profession manuals as the girls from the sect, but because of the facilities that her body had.
Sure, the little wyrm could have tried to work as an alchemist or even a blacksmith given how she can skillfully manipulate things with her tail, but many parts of the process would have been unnecessarily harder given her lack of multiple limbs to hold onto things.
So, besides the “warrior” profession which she shared with everyone else, she also had some other interesting choices, namely “guard”, “companion” and “mount”.
Amusingly enough all of them had things in common, which were that fighting was included, meaning that the little wyrm was judged to be quite a fierce girl, but the context and focus of each was different.
Guard required her to remain in the camp most of the time, so the little wyrm instantly discarded it, she had just obtained permission to be out in the open after all, mount originally drew the attention of the little wyrm, but while the manual was available for her, she would not be able to properly take advantage of the manual in her current size.
Espi could easily carry three adults in her back, without her speed being affected much, but it wouldn’t be comfortable for the people, since the width of her body is small.
Luckily the remaining option “companion” was perfectly tailored for the little wyrm, it was a manual with a more generic approach, as its focus was “interaction” with teammates, but that was perfectly fine because Espi wanted to try doing a lot of different things now that she could play with others besides Kana and the girls from the Twin Sword Valley.
And so, the little wyrm has accepted and completed, combat, reconnaissance, construction, gathering and even miscellaneous missions, such as passing messages to Kana or Aster from other people, because while Espi couldn’t directly communicate with others like with Aster or Kana, she could perfectly understand what they said.
Some of those missions overlapped with the daily quests as well, so it was two birds one stone for the little wyrm, and the most important part is that she was happy with the result.
‘As expected, her options are similar but not the same’, thought Aster as he was shared the screen of the exchange monolith from the filly.
Just like everyone she had the warrior profession, and similar to the little wyrm she had the guard profession, but she only had three options in total instead of four and instead of “mount”, she had the profession “war ride” which was obviously not as flexible as Espi’s mount option, but completely fight oriented.
And that makes sense, considering the filly is a rare case of a female horse having fighting teeth which are normally found in male horses.
“I should have mentioned it before, but besides your profession manual, only choose a movement and an attack type manual for now”, said Aster, her three professions were combat oriented, so there was no way to be wrong about that anyway.
After a second of contemplation and thanks to the filly knowing about the professions that the little wyrm had available, courtesy of a certain really talkative little girl which spent some time yesterday with the filly in question, she didn’t hesitate to choose the option that was different than the known ones, and so her manual “Ruler of the Plains” was about becoming a “War Ride”.
And here a little surprise appeared for two different people, first and formal Aster, since he is the representative and because he is close to the monoliths as well.
[The conditions for a special mission have been met, the respective tasks will become available for those that meet the requirements from now and onwards]
The filly who was in the process of deciding her attack and movement manuals, was hit with a message, this time from the mission monolith.
[Unity Test (ride): do coordination training with the detected rider candidate for two hours to confirm compatibility]
And now, we change to the other person who got the notification of the special missions, a young girl with blond hair and blue eyes who approached the monolith to see the mission in question.
[Unity Test (rider): do coordination training with the detected ride candidate for two hours to confirm compatibility]
“Look big brother, I’m going to be a rider~”, said Kana with sparkles in her eyes, as she smiled at Aster who couldn’t help but chuckle.
“Of course, you will”, he said as he patted the little girl’s head, he was planning to try and see if the horses could cooperate with them, but Kana took the first step for him, it was fine anyway, also he could feel many interested gazes on him coming from the girls of the sect, which were then directed at the horses that were resting in the distance.
Interestingly enough there was no change on the filly upon choosing her profession manual, despite the fact that she should have obtained progress on par with the average of the group in it.
But thinking of it from a different perspective, her progress regarding getting closer to her “rider candidate”, in other words Kana, was quite high already, so probably the filly had surpassed what she would have obtained.
“Besides our new teammate, the other horses need to rest until today’s noon, so for the time being those interested in trying to meet the conditions for these special missions, can ask Kana about her interactions with…”, Aster stopped there for a second, it was going to be annoying to keep referring to the filly as “she” or “filly”, and as if Kana could read Aster’s mind, she stepped in to help her new friend.
“She said she once saw a lightning land on a tree, which resulted in it burning and found the flames pretty, so I told her a few names that came to me on the spot and she choose “Ember” for herself”, said the little girl.
‘Apparently she got way closer with them than what I expected in a single day’, thought Aster to then say.
“Okay, then those interested in those missions can ask and observe Kana’s interactions with Ember during the day”.
The time to shine for the recently named filly, Ember, wasn’t over yet, because once she chose her movement and attack type manuals, “Thunder Hoofs” and “Earthquake”, her body was once again bathed in dim blue light only for a second.
On the outside there were no changes, but those with sharper senses like Aster, Mira and Guardian could immediately tell that Ember had gotten stronger in a second, of course not like it would happen with cultivators, but her overall status improved on the spot.
If her aunt, the mare that is leading the remaining horses is around one fifth as strong as Guardian, then the filly used to be a tenth part as strong as her aunt, until as second ago.
“Grrr”, that was Guardian speaking, which was translated by Mira.
“The accumulated bonus she got from choosing her manuals, basically tripled her strengths, which is amazing for two days of development only”, said the ligress girl as she communicated what the lynx wanted to transmit.
“According to her aunt, Ember has always outshined her peers, even male horses in the same weight and size category lost to her in terms of speed and strength”, added the little girl as she translated what the mare wanted to add to the previous message from Guardian.
Leaving aside the little girl and the filly who were in high spirits, the little wyrm who had silently slid all the way to where Aster was standing, climbed through Aster’s leg to then coil around his neck.
“Hisss”, that was Espi asking if she shouldn’t have chosen the “mount” profession, clearly the little wyrm was feeling jealous of Kana and Ember, not as in she wanted to monopolize Kana, more sisters playing with them were always welcomed, but she would have liked to try those missions with Aster.
“Ahem, companion is a flexible profession, maybe if you spend more time with me, we’ll get a mission for you, let’s do it like this, after I finish the demonstration, I had planned, you can participate in my own training”, he said to which the little wyrm of course happily hissed in response.
“Hisssss~” and with the little wyrm cutely rubbing her head against Aster’s cheek, after having obtained what she wanted, it was time for the drafted black horse to make his appearance, so under the dangerous gaze of a certain dragon princess, he walked towards the monoliths.
[Calculation completed, the result is “Regular”, which can be converted into three hundred low grade merits]
The results for the black horse weren’t outstanding by any means, but it was fine, that didn’t mean it was weak, but the blue flaming board didn’t solely evaluate the participants based on strength, so one could only blame the black horse for sucking at leading the infected horses against Aster and the others.
Naturally, the profession manuals for the black horse were also not the same, of course he had the “warrior” one and surprisingly he also had the “mount” one, but the last one was… different.
“Heavy Carrier, looks like someone traumatized this guy to the point that his “special” profession is related to work”, jokingly said Aster since others couldn’t see the message from the monolith, which of course made Alice smirk to then say.
“Someone tell him that if he doesn’t choose the heavy carrier, I’ll beat him up every time I feel like it~”, playfully said the wild dragon princess, which made Guardian who more or less understood the meaning of Alice’s words, raise an eyebrow at Aster.
Amusingly enough there was no need for the lynx nor Kana to pass on the message, the black horse could feel the threatening sensation radiated by Alice and instantly knew he had no say, also no one spoke on his behalf so with an appalled expression, he chose the manual that would keep him safe from that terrifying human woman.
And then, since he of course wasn’t allowed to get an attack type manual for starters, the choice was movement and defense, because with the large body of the black horse, Alice suggested to use it as a meat shield if the situation called for that.
At the very least with those manuals, the black horse could have a chance to survive being treated as both a pack mule and a meat shield, which in the opinion of many of the surviving normal horses was too good for him.
Now imagine their expressions when they saw a dim blue light envelop the body of the black horse, and then a second later his legs, neck and back actually grew, not that much a few centimeters, but it was noticeable.
In other words, the black horse “improved”, maybe not combat wise but he grew and that was enough for the other horses, who had understood what happened here thanks to Guardian and the mare and now they all started to show more interest in joining the group.
And that’s in part what Aster wanted, Ember clearly isn’t an “average” member of their race, so they didn’t put as much weight to her getting stronger, as when it happened to the black horse.
‘Now they should all be thinking “If that guy can do it, can’t I as well?”, instant motivation’, he thought to then say.
“Well, ladies, it looks like you’ll have a much better cooperation now”, jokingly said Aster which was met with a bunch of smiles.
And now, it was time to fulfill a couple of promises, first and formal morning exercise routine with a certain sportsy blond haired girl, and also the daily subject in which he’ll be sharing progress with the whole group.
Luckily, both things perfectly aligned with each other this time.
“Today’s assigned “mentor” will be me and the subject is going to be “Mortal combat in general”, of course I need a sparring partner which is why, I’ll ask for elder Agnes’s cooperation”, said Aster which made Agnes smile, she was more than happy with the idea.
