- Chapter 754 - 754: The third day of the development trial (part 7)

Seeing the enthusiasm in Agnes’s pretty face, Aster couldn’t help but softly laugh as he was reminded of their date back then when she revealed her background to him, only for her to be the one surprised when he told her, his last name.
“All this enthusiasm and that tight grip around my wrist sure does bring back some fun memories from “that time” back at our date in the Treasure Graveyard”, he jokingly said, which of course caused a huge reaction among the public, mainly those curious girls who loved gossiping.
“Woah, what you think “that time” meant?”, cutely asked a young disciple from the Green Lotus, to which one from the Black Sword answered.
“I was there that day, sister Agnes was wearing different clothes and it was the first time we saw her holding onto senior brother Aster’s arm, could it be that they already ki…”.
“Hmm, I seem to heard a lot of little girls “volunteering” for tomorrow’s morning routine”, said the sportsy sun diamond princess with a smile that wasn’t smile as she gazed at the girls from the sect, interrupting what that girl from the Black Sword was about to say.
They were dangerously close to the “truth”, that day, for some reason that she still doesn’t understand, asked if she could ask for a peck on her cheek every now and then, since for some high ranked figures among the strong first tier forces, Agnes basically admitted to being courted as of current, by the Lord of the Twin Sword Valley.
Of course, Aster teased the hell out of her, by feigning ignorance making it seem as if he thought she wanted to hold hands here and there to make things seem more “real”, so being reminded of that made the sportsy sun diamond princess’s sharp glare fall on those cute gossiping girls.
One could see the “fear” in the eyes of those cute girls as they heard the words “morning routine”, which of course made them give Aster puppy eyes, asking for his protection from Agnes’s claws.
“Now, don’t bully them too much”, said Aster which earned him sparkly gazes from those cute girls, at least until he added.
“They will be your cute trainees for endurance training for the rest of the week after all”, and with that the tables turned on the girls from the sect, because while their previously smiles stiffened, Agnes softly laughed at them.
“Senior brother!”, of course since Aster had teasing smile on his face, those cute girls exclaimed in unison knowing that their admired senior brother was messing with them this time.
With a smile of “sufficiency” the sportsy sun diamond princess put some distance between herself and Aster, as she positioned herself, and this marked the end of one type of fun, to another one, since the spar was about to start.
Even those girls who were previously mumbling among themselves stopped, their full attention was in Aster and Agnes now, they didn’t want to miss a single second of their spar.
There was one girl whose narrowed eyes were looking at Agnes as if she wanted to pierce a hole through her, Valentina.
‘Date, holding hands and the Treasure Graveyard, humph, even after that little talk you are still keeping secrets from your older sister, just you wait you, “traitorous” little girl!’, inwardly thought the purple lightning princess, which made Agnes feel a chill run down her spine, before she put the matter at the back of her head, to focus in what was about to come.
Aster did as Agnes and took some distance, to then take his stance, now unlike the explanation he gave them, neither of them hid the dagger, the spar was to show those cute girls the different ways either themselves or the enemies could use the dagger.
The very first thing that happened was that Agnes’s blue eyes moved left and right quite a few times, that was the sportsy sun diamond princess analyzing what route to take for the first clash, she really, really was decided to score a point against Aster this time.
‘He is there, just standing with that calm smile, seemingly relaxed and yet the “flaws” I can see are all traps, his guard is as solid as possible and he is not even holding a sword… amazing~’, thought Agnes.
Every time she found a way to reach Aster in her mind, she could see herself getting blocked and then receiving a red painting mark with the first twenty or so exchanges, and that was she, giving herself a really good evaluation.
“If that’s the case, then…”, mumbled Agnes as she tightened her grip on the training dagger, before she charged towards Aster, contrary to what one would expect she didn’t zig-zagged, nor did any feint but directly thrusted the dagger towards Aster’s upper body.
“Clack!”, the sound of wood colliding reached the observer’s ears the next second, when Aster and Agnes’s wood training daggers collided, however the clash didn’t happen at the chest area like originally appeared it was going to be.
“Tsk”, the sportsy sun diamond princess clicked her tongue to then with a fierce light shinning in her pretty blue yes, close her free right hand to form a fist with which she punched straight towards Aster’s face.
“Thud!”, a solid sound was produced as Agnes’s fist was blocked by Aster with his forearm.
“Woah, did you see that, sister Agnes changed her dagger’s trajectory midway from senior brother’s chest to his side!”, said a girl from the Red Sword with an excited voice.
The previous sounded simple but that isn’t the case, there was no feint used to create an opportunity, there wasn’t an ounce of “trickery” at all, until Agnes smoothly changed her dagger’s trajectory to stab Aster’s side.
That was a maneuver that couldn’t be foreseen unless one had experience in dagger wielding, the same applies to executing it of course, such a seamless tactic is not something an amateur could pull off, not to mention that her follow up punch hit really hard.
“That looks like it would hurt”, mumbled a girl from the Green Lotus, that punch from Agnes packed quite a lot of strength, by all means it should have produced a reaction either from the one giving it or from the one launching it, or in a much more realistic scenario, both.
“When I was little, I remember an old grandpa working at one of the branches as an honor elder of my family, telling me that only of the after he got wounded in a battle, which caused him to have temporary damage on his dantian, he learned the importance of knowing out to “tough out” the impact of giving of receiving a punch and that was when his realm only diminished while he was training back to his peak”, added a girl from the White Sword faction.
She is right, if Aster had been unable to stand the pain caused by the impact of Agnes’s fist, his involuntary reaction would have opened a path straight for Agnes to continue her assault, likewise if Agnes’s had retrieved her fist due to pain, she would be open for retaliation.
In close combat, a second of distraction can mean death, training out the active aspect is easy, but eliminating the unconscious aspects can’t be done with simple training, experience and will are needed for that.
This is actually one of the things that Lilia taught Aster, you won’t take your eyes away from the enemy even if dirt thrown at them, you force yourself to keep them open and use the chance to kill the enemy who will never expect the previous, a tactic that obviously doesn’t belong to a cultivator’s manual.
Of course, the previous is an extreme situation that if you followed all your training correctly, shouldn’t happen, but the key point is to not waver, to not give the enemy an opening and to control yourself in a close combat fight.
‘Heh, smart girls’, thought Aster as he both heard those girls catching up the most important about the first clash between himself and Agnes, and as he saw Agnes changing from a fist to a grappling technique taking advantage of the point of contact between them.
It’s worth mentioning that those girl’s reactions took time to explain, but happened at the same time and quite fast, so it hasn’t been even three seconds since Aster and Agnes clashed.
Naturally Aster didn’t allow the sportsy sun diamond princess to get a hold of his arm, so after pushing her dagger which he was blocking to the side, Aster took a step to his left, getting out of the range of Agnes’s dagger, to then punch at her face with his left hand which was free, as he held the dagger with his right one, unlike Agnes.
Seeing that there was zero hesitation to attack her pretty face, instead of any negative emotions, Agnes actually… smiled to her insides, she likes the fact that Aster doesn’t care about such mundane aspects in a fight.
That being said, she still dangerously glared at the incoming fist, to then counter with a punch of her own.
“Thud!”, once their fists collided it was as if something was triggered, a barrage of slashes and thrusts from their daggers as well as they trying to get a hold of the other.
“Clack!”, with one last clash, both Agnes and Aster stopped their exchange and took distance from each other.
“I wonder how come you are so popular among those little girls, when you really did your best to punch my face”, jokingly said Agnes as she saw the six red marks that had appeared on her body.
Four were on her arms, three on the left and two on her right arm only, those were slashing marks and were rather pale, in other words instead of calling them cuts, they would be scratches if this was a real fight, as for the remaining mark, it was a point shaped one produced by a “stab”, on Agnes’s left shin.
That was supposed to land on her thigh, but Agnes raised her leg at the last second, she literally used a more protected area to defend a more vulnerable one, needless to say but all those were non-fatal wounds, and that’s not all, there was another reason as to why Agnes was all smiles right now.
“Well, just like most male enemies will lookout for their lower abdomen, most female enemies will lookout for attacks coming to the face, it’s a good way to distract the vast majority of enemies, though I must admit that for a certain someone is nothing but a cheap trick”, said Aster as he raised his left arm where there was a though faint, twice larger blue slashing mark in comparison to the ones Agnes had.
She only managed to secure one chance to land a hit, but the sportsy sun diamond princess surely made it count.
“Sister Agnes scored a point!”, exclaimed the junior disciples in unison, only to giggle when Aster added.
“You on the other hand, really did your best to try and get a hold of me, if you really want to, we can hold hands later”.
“Hmph!”, softly snorting at those cute girls giggling at them, but also softly laughing at Aster’s words, the sportsy sun diamond princess regained her combat stance, she only had three more chances to secure a second hit on Aster.
But that was fine, she trusted that after getting a “taste” of close combat with Aster, she would be able to cut the wounds she had to take in order to get him, in half, and in Agnes case that’s not arrogance, but confidence.
With an agile move of her hand, Agnes changed her grip on the dagger to the icepick one, while she also lowered her stance a bit, this was actually a position also used for quick swordplay but Agnes had adapted it for the dagger.
‘She just changed her fighting style right, to one that will allow her slip past my immediate defense, which is incredible, I wonder why show it to me, instead of doing it midway during a clash though’, thought Aster.
The Agnes he knew wouldn’t waste a chance to create an opening and land a hit, so there must be something else going on here, on the other hand it could also be the sportsy sun diamond princess trying to make him overthink, in other words the exchange had already started.
‘Young girls in love can be very stubborn, especially those that don’t realize that they are in love, you are in for a fun “treat”, darling~’, thought Lilia as she saw Agnes charging towards Aster.
She had lowered her body to reduce the area open for attacks, this also helped her maintain a better balance, meaning that she was planning to move around quite a bit, which again would have been better to do as a surprise attack.
“Clack!”, it didn’t matter anymore, the sportsy sun diamond princess started by slashing her dagger upwards in diagonal to Aster’s arm, only for Aster to block with his dagger.
This time Agnes became quite fierce, she pushed Aster’s dagger backwards and right away aimed to stab his chest downwards, using her dagger like a hook, this forced Aster to step backwards, but the follow up Aster expected, namely a kick or a punch.
Agnes instead advanced and actually tackled Aster, in the process she took two slashes to the back and a stab to the shoulder, but at the last second, she managed to push Aster to the ground.
“Clack!”, Agnes tried to land a “fatal” hit on Aster by stabbing his chest, but it was blocked by Aster’s dagger, which made her slightly bit her lip, before her eyes glowed for a fraction of a second as she moved her dagger along her whole upper body.
“Haaa!”, with a loud sound, the sportsy sun diamond princess managed to graze the base of Aster’s neck with the tip of her dagger just as Aster also “slashed” her neck.
Of course, Agnes barely reached him and it wasn’t a sure death cut while Aster did “kill her”, but her victorious smile made it seem as if she had overwhelmingly triumphed over Aster.
‘How cute’, thought Aster to then say.
“Given this amazing, shouldn’t I be the one rewarding you?”, jokingly said Aster, which confused the sportsy sun diamond princess for a fraction of a second, until she realized that she was basically sitting on top of Aster, in quite a suggestive position one must add.
“Woah, sister Agnes looked like she knew how to force senior brother in that position”, mumbled one girl from the Black Sword.
“Ugh, you can’t even let me enjoy my victory in peace”, said Agnes with a pout as she heard the gossiping coming from the surrounds, amusingly enough she didn’t run away like back then.
“I still don’t understand what are your parameters, like back then you even laid on top of me with all the calm in the world, like right now, but a single peck and you ran like a scared rabbit”, jokingly said Aster to which Agnes softly laughed as she got up to then offer her hand to help him get up, while saying.
“Well, that’s because I know you are not going to try anything, unless the situation is the “right” one”.
“I’ll have to put more effort to trick you then”, said Aster as he accepted the helping hand, the situation didn’t blow up, since Agnes remained calm which stopped those cute girls from letting their imagination fly.
However, they now felt a bit jealous that Agnes had these kind of exchanged with their senior brother, and promised to improve in order to be able to participate in a spar with him.
That being said, while Agnes easily got away from the previous situation, Aster was being stared at by a certain group of girls, the most obvious out of them all, was none other than Valentina whose eyes were narrowed as she gazed at him.
It wasn’t his fault though, Vivian, innocently said something along the lines of, “I want to try wrestling with Aster too!”, when she saw the end of the spar, of course she didn’t mean it as in she wanted to sit on top of Aster, but as in she actually wanted to try a bit of close combat.
But her timing wasn’t the best one, and while others were used to Vivian’s limits with Aster being quite vague to say the least, Valentina thought the white-haired girl considered all the training flirting so she was now sharply gazing at Aster.
“Ahem, let’s take a five-minute break to clean the paint and drink a bit of water, before continuing with the sword explanation”, said Aster out loud to then whisper at Agnes.
“Did you tell miss Valentina about our date back then?”, he asked to which Agnes slightly blushed as she shook her head.
‘Ah, this little princess is going to make her older sister chase me with a sword in her hand’, amusedly thought Aster, this whole thing could have been avoided if Valentina knew that he didn’t actually start dating with Agnes back then.
Even now, they were only friends, until Agnes solved how she felt about him, herself, that peck was the limit, the reason is simple, Aster wants her to realize and understand the difference between that strong curiosity innately caused by her Fey ascendence and love.
Which according to Lilia is actually beneficial for a Fey princess, since it helped his Fey godmother make an advance after she realized that she didn’t actually want to “marry” Lilia, she simply really wanted to be her friend.
It sounds simple for others, but for some of them is important, it’s also worth mentioning that not all the Fey princesses have this interesting trait, Valentina is not like that for example.
Even in that aspect she is the responsible one, in fact one would think she is the older between Agnes, their cousin in other words Aster’s godmother and herself.
“Mm?”, Agnes who was receiving a cup of water from Valentina, raised her eyebrow as she saw the purple lightning princess take out a wood training sword as she walked towards Aster to then say.
“I think that we can add a bit more of “variety” to the sword spar, since both you and Agnes specialize in it, so I’ll participate as well, to make things more interesting I’ll assist both in a random manner, okay”.
“I thrust that the Lord of the Twin Sword Valley, who clearly holds the most experience in terms of mortal level fighting, can deal with both of us at the same time, right?”, she said with slight smirk on the corner of her mouth, which made Lilia speak from within the mind space.
‘See, I told you that courting one of those princesses would come bite you, either for protection or because it could raise the interest of another one in you, darling~’.
