- Chapter 756 - 756: The third day of the development trial (part 9)

“Looks like I won the fight, in terms of popularity at least”, jokingly said Aster as he heard those cute girls cheering up for him, which of course earned him a soft snort from both princesses.
“Humph!”, naturally Aster wasn’t bragging due to vanity, he simply was giving those two some “motivation” for the fight.
And it worked like a charm, because after eyeing each other for a couple of seconds, both princesses had a sharp light flashing through their pretty eyes as they started moving towards Aster.
“Clack!”, that being said, it’s clear that they weren’t working together, but were instead competing to see who got to Aster first, because along the way Agnes swung her wood sword at Valentina who parried the attack with her own wood sword.
Neither their feet nor their swords stopped moving, but after two more exchanges, the one who came up on top this time was Valentina, as in she skillfully parried Agnes’s last strike to then push her sword to the side, just in time for her to take a long step to then slash her sword at Aster who had calmly waited to see who reached him first.
As expected, Aster blocked Valentina’s sword with quite ease, her attack wasn’t heavy enough to push him backwards just by the sheer impact, on the other hand it’s not like the responsible purple lightning amethyst princess wasn’t aware of that, so instead of trying to use force she used the very same reason as to why she is the perfect teacher for Nerissa, her lightning-fast reaction time which allows her swordsmanship to change as she wants it or needs it to.
So, instead of the solid sound of wood clashing against wood, there was a faint impact as Valentina’s sword slid through the surface of Aster’s one, as the purple lightning princess made a swift twirl to the side alongside her sword.
Now, the previous is quite far from the simple and efficient movements Aster had put emphasis for those cute girls, that one should use in mortal level combat in order to not leave oneself open for attacks.
Not to mention that without movement techniques or spirit energy to smooth one’s movements, such a gimmick would look crude and disgraceful, however Valentina was actually able to pull it off while keeping her movement precise and elegant.
To the point that Aster didn’t find any opening to exploit, that didn’t stop him from slashing his sword at hers, in order to block her attack though.
“Clack!”, the momentum which the purple lightning princess had accumulated with that maneuver allowed her to increase the impact of her attack, so this time Aster did feel it, as the solid sound of wood colliding against wood that was produced by their swords clashing, suggested.
‘Even without spirit energy she can easily go from swift maneuvering to heavy impact in a single seamless move, as one would expect from Nerissa’s master’, thought Aster as he tightened his grip on the handle of the sword to then push both Valentina and her sword away.
Just in time for Agnes to follow up as she caught up with them way too fast, with a slash performed in a trajectory that could reach both her cousin and Aster at the same time.
The purple lightning was naturally the first to react, she saw Agnes’s sword aiming to her first and a sharp light flashed through her eyes as she used the momentum gained by Aster pushing her sword to jump backwards, perfectly getting out of the range of those two.
“Clack!”, Aster on the other hand had his sword meet Agnes’s, at the highest point of the arc he drew when pushing Valentina’s attack back, naturally two strong slashes meeting each other, resulted in a solid wood against wood clashing sound.
However, and as fierce and intuitive as the sportsy sun diamond princess’s style might appear, that doesn’t mean she is reckless, her high speed combined with her instincts, resulted in she choosing the perfect moment for her attack to land on Aster’s sword.
As in, Agnes heavy slash reached Aster’s sword when his was at the end of its performance, in other words her attack at its strongest point reached Aster’s attack at its weakest point.
And here the previously mentioned fact that despite each of them showing to be superior in some aspect when compared to the others, doesn’t mean that an abysmal difference exists, came in to play.
Because Agnes has enough “brute force” to gain the upper hand in a direct confrontation, even against Aster under the correct circumstances, when her cousin on the other hand only equaled him earlier.
“Ha!”, with a though not that loud, but still fierce sound, the sportsy sun diamond princess applied strength to her sword with both of her hands and using her advantageous positioning she pushed Aster’s sword back.
It wasn’t enough to break Aster’s solid stance, but judging by the slight smile that appeared on Agnes’s pretty face, that wasn’t her aim, also she instinctively retreated on the spot, one second before Valentina’s sword could slash her side, as her cousin tried to get a sneak attack to land on her, putting an end to the second clash between those three.
“It’s good to see you two having fun and all, but being a “bad” influence for the junior disciples in the public is supposed to be my thing, you know?”, jokingly said Aster, referring to how Valentina suddenly pulled those complex maneuvers while Agnes was too straightforward as she didn’t use a feint or anything, but charged straight with the idea of overpowering Aster for a change.
Which again, they did perfectly despite being restricted to mortal level, thanks to their insane talent and swords skills, but it would be hard for the girls of the sect to use similar tactics, with a few exceptions of course.
One could see the two Fey princesses slightly blush on the spot, as they realized that they had gotten too invested into the previous clash, it wasn’t their fault though, they were truly having a lot of fun.
‘Ugh, I can understand Agnes letting loose like that, but I’m supposed to be the responsible one here’, thought Valentina only to see Aster’s teasing smile being directed especially her way.
And with that, the responsible purple lightning amethyst princess self-reflecting attitude stopped on the spot, as she felt… slightly annoyed by Aster’s smile, which made her softly snort to her insides.
‘Humph, you didn’t say anything when Agnes threw her weapon away and tackled you, so why are you being picky when it is my turn to have fun…’, she thought a before cunning light shone in her pretty purple eyes as she said.
“It was done on purpose, after all, the fact that our side is training to fight in the most effective and proper way for the early and middle stages of this trial, doesn’t mean others would do the same, I’m sure that the enemy will try to bring the aspects of a cultivator’s fighting style to mortal level, so we’ll see a lot of them using poorly executed flashy moves”.
“Therefore, I decided to show our sect’s disciples some proper examples of a cultivator’s moves adapted for mortal level, this way they can be prepared for both the common awkward poor version they’ll be seeing and the rare cases in which an enemy could pull off a decent one, right, Agnes?”, said the purple lightning princess with a “responsible” and serious voice.
That being said, Valentina had the words “Don’t you dare not support my claim!”, written all over her pretty face when she turned to see Agnes to ask for her opinion.
“Mm, sister Valentina is right, Aster is focusing in showing everyone how to properly fight as a mortal, so naturally we should focus in everything else the enemy might try, like forcefully pushing through without using a feint by relying in one’s speed as well”, directly answered the sportsy sun diamond princess.
Apparently, there was no need for the threatening smile that wasn’t smile, considering the happy tone behind of Agnes’s voice as she offered her support to her cousin, instead of to Aster for a change.
‘Look at these two, writing and signing a permission to play around for the other, how cute’, amusingly thought Aster as he saw those two join hands to keep him in check.
On the other hand, their argument did make sense, even if he won’t focus in teaching those cute girls any advanced stuff for the time being, it is true that the enemies will for sure make the mistake of trying to use cultivator level stuff as mortals.
Seeing the girls giggling at him this time, meaning that they supported Agnes and Valentina, mainly because they were curious about what kind of movements will two of their idols, when in comes to swordsmanship in the sect, are able to pull off even at mortal level, Aster ultimately sighed in defeat.
“Fine, I concede, you see as a mortal is not easy to win against a perfectly synchronized team”, he said, which nearly made the two princesses look away in shame, due to the junior disciples laughing at Aster’s words, but they toughed it out this time.
‘See darling, I told you that those princesses were troublesome~’, said Lilia from within the mind space, unfortunately she got no answer because Aster changed to go on the offensive.
His legs tensed for a second and with a heavy step, Aster lunged towards Agnes, her reaction time is a bit slower than her cousin’s, but she is faster in terms of sheer speed, not to mention that she is physically stronger than Valentina, so the sportsy sun diamond princess is perfect for following up in case Valentina creates an opening, and to prevent that Aster targeted her first.
“Clack!”, the two wood swords heavily collided a second later, this time Aster was the one slashing downwards, while Agnes did so upwards, of course in a direct confrontation she was going to be forced back by Aster, but this wasn’t a 1v1 fight.
Valentina’s sword joined the fray the next moment, coming from below skillfully hitting a weak point in order to separate them, successfully making both Aster and Agnes’s swords retreat, creating an opening for the purple lightning princess to strike either of them.
And here one would believe she’ll go for Aster, given how she just managed to “suppress” him alongside Agnes, but nope, Valentina slightly twisted her hand to transition from slashing upwards to downwards with the same movement.
Her perfect timing allowed her sword to make its way towards Agnes’s shoulder, but then she had to adjust the trajectory of her slash because Aster used his free hand to try and get a hold of her.
Maybe anything but sword attacks didn’t count to score points, but they could use punches, tackles, kicks and the like to make way for their swords, if they found the chance between the rain of slashes and thrusts of course.
Thanks to that slight distraction and while reacting a bit slower than Valentina, the sportsy sun diamond princess took advantage of her superior speed to take a nimble step to the side, dodging her cousin’s slash, without getting too far away.
With a sharp light flashing through her eyes, Agnes counterattacked by thrusting her sword at Valentina who was in the process of retrieving her sword and for a change Aster cooperated with her this time by slashing his sword at the purple lightning princess.
“Clack!”, that was the sound of Valentina using her sword to block Aster’s slash, the strength behind of the impact pushed her to the side a bit, which was the last nail in her “coffin” as in her side was perfectly aligned for Agnes to land a hit on her.
“Humph!”, however when has the purple lightning princess’s fierceness been surpassed by anyone, just as Agnes was about to reach her, she smacked Aster’s sword with her own so that it would… move Agnes’s way.
“Woah”, the girls from the sect looked with sparkles in their eyes at the first two points scored in the spar, Valentina had a blue point on her left side, while a red line appeared on Agnes’s right forearm.
“To think that the sister I looked up to was a… bad loser”, mumbled Agnes as she saw how Valentina used Aster’s sword to return her the point since the color of the mark didn’t matter according to the rules of the spar.
“Humph, little backstabbing girls need to be disciplined”, casually said Valentina as she got back at Agnes, needless to say but they were just playing around, as there wasn’t an ounce of anger in neither their voices nor their faces.
Unfortunately, before Aster could laugh at those two’s display of sisterly love, two pairs of sharp gazes were directed his way, as both princesses spoke in unison the next second.
“One person is missing a cut”, apparently, they reached the unanimous decision of focusing on Aster since they both were one point closer to losing.
“Clack!”, Agnes took the initiative this time, her sword moved from Valentina’s side to his abdomen, she took advantage of the fact that her cousin had dragged Aster’s sword a bit further away from his comfortable slashing range to use it against herself a moment ago, which meant that he would not be able to block with his sword in time.
Of course, that didn’t secure Agnes a point, Aster’s reaction speed is not inferior to hers, so since he had to retrieve his sword anyway, the black-haired dragon youth jumped backwards in order to rebuild his stance.
But he was followed by Valentina who took a large step to maintain Aster within the range of her sword, using his landing as an opening the purple lightning princess slashed her sword horizontally at Aster’s side, as if she was trying to vent her anger due to the blue dot that now rested on her own side.
“Clack!”, Aster placed his sword vertically at his side, stopping Valentina’s slash in cold just in time, given his lack of footing at the moment of impact, the purple lightning princess did manage to get a reaction of him, but it was only Aster regaining his stance one step backwards than what he was going to, originally.
Still, just that sure brought a smile to Valentina’s pretty face, well, it was that little achievement combined with the fact that Agnes had jumped and her sword was now heavily descending diagonally at Aster and his sword was at his side.
However, at the last second, a smirk appeared at the corner of Aster’s mouth as he bent his knees, reducing his height in a split of second, just enough to perfectly dodge Agnes’s attack, while his grip on his own sword tensed making Valentina try to apply more strength to keep the current positioning of her own sword.
But she couldn’t hold her position, it wasn’t her fault though, her reaction was in time, but Aster simply brute forced his way through, forcing his sword to slash downwards, before raising upwards diagonally, marking both Agnes and Valentina in the process.
‘Ugh!’, both princesses exclaimed to their insides, Aster took the two of them by surprise this time, that being said and despite they now having two marks each, both were having a blast as of current.
‘Do you have so much fun every time you disappear from my sight?’, thought Valentina as she gazed at Agnes.
‘Yes’, as if Agnes knew what Valentina was thinking, she answered in her mind.
“You have seen what would happen if you meet someone that has way too much experience in combat at mortal level, even if you are talented enough to bring over the characteristics of your fighting style as a cultivator, there is a chance you’ll suffer a setback”, explained the responsible purple lightning princess.
“So, instead of doing only that, those that are actually smart and skilled enough will… combine both”, added the sportsy sun diamond princess, which nearly made Aster laugh out loud, those two were now talking in synchrony just by exchanging gazes.
As if those two cute princesses had been injected adrenaline, they both jumped backwards regrouping to then charge at Aster at the same time, the one to reach him first was Valentina now, despite Agnes being faster, she adjusted her rhythm to match her cousin’s.
“Clack!”, though lower on the scale, the responsible purple lightning princess managed to create a solid sound when her sword clashed against Aster’s, she went for a direct hit instead of maneuvering her way to find an opening like usual.
In other words, she wasn’t just having fun like before, and Valentina wasn’t the only one, Agnes who arrived a second later, thrusted her sword at Aster’s chest which seemed like her straightforward style of usual, but that wasn’t the case.
At the last second just as Aster smacked Valentina’s sword away, the sportsy sun diamond princess turned her thrust into a feint by moving her sword to the side, to then slash downwards towards Aster’s legs.
Of course, this first exchange while indeed surprising Aster, it wasn’t enough for those two to get one over him, so taking a large leap backwards, was enough for Aster to dodge both Agnes’s surprisingly fluid sneak attack, as well as Valentina’s sword which was thrusted at his chest after he smacked it away.
Not like that discouraged those two in the slightest, since they rushed at Aster right away, this time they moved at the same time, despite their speed and the size of their steps being different, those two were like reflects of the other.
Well, had it not been for their different eye color and slight difference in height and the atmosphere around each one of them due to their respective personalities, those two would look similar enough to be actual sisters.
Anyway, both princesses maintained the same speed of movement until they reached Aster, preventing him from knowing who was going to attack first, and the very moment they arrived in front of him, they made their move.
“Now!”, Agnes gave the signal and Valentina detached from her side, moving to the side to then make turns around Aster, once again they seemed to have returned to their usual style, Agnes being straightforward while Valentina looked for a chance to maker her sword reach him.
But that was just a feint, Agnes recklessly slashed her sword with all her might at Aster, the result was a powerful strike indeed, one that even Aster would feel, but in the process, she lost the flexibility that a proper swordsman should have in their style for it to be effective.
“Mm?”, of course Aster didn’t buy for a second that the sportsy sun diamond princess would make such an amateur mistake, and he was right.
“Booom!”, due to the lack of proper maneuvering that Agnes’s sword had due to the extra strength she put in her swing, Aster was able to easily dodge her attack, which resulted in her slash heavily landing on the ground.
However, the smile on Agnes’s pretty face made it obvious that, such a thing was within her calculations, because thanks to the heavy blow she landed on the ground, dust was raised covering the path of her sword which had bounced and was slashing upwards all the way from Aster’s thigh to his shoulder.
All this while Valentina had found an opening by positioning herself behind of Aster, it was a pincer attack from both the front and the back.
