The Wolf Prince's Fated Heart - Page 56
Blaine Stewart comes running down the stairs as I drive up to the Grey Manor. I don’t know much about the guy, except that he’s Alyssa’s Beta in the Dark Hunters.
Well, he’s an acting Alpha, but only because Alyssa’s duties as a queen are too time-consuming. He’s also the one who taught Garren to reconnect with his inner wolf and tap into his powers.
“Your Highness,” Blaine greets me when I get out of the car. He slightly bows his head. I nod.
“What are you doing here?” I ask, wondering why I’ve been called to come on such short notice. “Did something happen?”
“Everyone’s already gathered in the conference room,” he says, avoiding my questions. “You’re the last to arrive.”
“Gathered for what?” I narrow my eyes. What’s so urgent? And why would they want to discuss it without me?
“You better go and see for yourself,” he replies and steps to the side, careful not to turn his back on me.
A small smile creeps on my lips. For someone who didn’t grow up at court, he’s well aware of its etiquette. I hurry past him, eager to find out the reason behind this meeting. I suppose that something big must have happened. Garren wouldn’t waste everyone’s time.
“Welcome, brother,” Garren says as I enter the conference room. Alyssa is on his right, Gavin on his left, next to Leia, who is flanked by Grayden.
“Glad you made it,” he says. “Where’s Cassidy?”
“The call sounded urgent. I didn’t want to lose time by fetching her,” I say and nod at the empty seat next to Grayden. “And Helia?”
“At work,” he replies. “They had a trauma coming in, and she couldn’t get away.”
“No matter,” Gavin says. “It’s not like she’d be of much help here anyway. We’re all just bystanders.”
I take a seat around the long table while Garren turns on the projector, illuminating the wall behind him.
“We managed to infiltrate our own mole inside the radicals,” Garren says. The way Grayden, Leia, and Gavin exchange looks, it’s clear that I’m not the only one who was kept in the dark.
“Who?” Gavin demands.
Garren lifts his chin, his black eyes glistening. “Tiana.”
“What the fuck?” Gavin exclaims. “Are you trying to get her killed? Is that it?”
“That’s not what this is about,” Garren denies.
“Don’t take me for a fool, brother,” Gavin insists. “I know how capable you are of holding a grudge. Are you seriously trying to convince me that you didn’t send Tiana on a suicide mission because she tried to kill your mate?”
“Tiana is an Alpha,” Garren says slowly, his voice low. “She is perfectly capable of taking care of herself. And yes, Alyssa and I talked to her, and we decided that she was the best wolf for the mission exactly because she tried to kill my mate. Everyone knows I punished her for it, which is what she’ll use to infiltrate the radicals. As far as they’re concerned, Tiana hates us.”
“Do you really expect me to believe that?” Gavin asks, exasperated. “She’s a hot-headed wolf. She’s strong, but still quite young.”
Garren shrugs. “She’s not much younger than any of us and look what we’ve been through. For better or worse, she will be our key to finding out what the radicals are up to.”
Gavin falls silent.
“What’s the plan?” I ask. “Was the infiltration successful?”
It’s Alyssa who speaks up, “It was. She’s been equipped with the cameras that send the data to our servers. The pack of Dark Hunters is in charge of sifting through them, and they’ve tagged whatever they deemed useful to us.”
“And?” I press. “Any news?”
Before any one of them can reply, my phone rings. I glance at the ID and instantly recognize Cassie’s number.
“I’ll be back in a second,” I say and step outside the conference room for the pretense of privacy, even though being so close to the wolves, there is no such thing.
I take the call. “Cassidy.”
