The World Dragon's Heir - Chapter 676: To Get The Goods

Chapter 676: To Get The Goods
General Marshall examined the pistol, a simple level ten magitech revolver with fire damage and mana recovery on hit, and his expression turned from excited to nearly giddy.
“This is precisely what our guards need for night watch. If we give it a holy magic blessing, it will be perfect.”
Alexis frowned. “Your mages can use holy magic?”
“Not many of them. We do have some clerics with the group, though. They can bless the weapons to add holy damage for a few days. Used on a mana revolver, it should add the holy element to every shot made in that time.
Normally, they do whole crates of arrows. But drawing and firing an arrow when being invaded by vampires in the dark is a mess, so they also do the swords.”
Alexis nodded. “My Order does the same.”
“Right, I had almost forgotten that you were an actual Paladin, and not one of those ceremonial positions that the western nations like to hand out to their Royals.”
“Ceremonial titles? So, their Royals don’t lead their military orders?” Dominic asked, confused.
“Oh, they do. But they can’t actually fight. They just have a rank and authority, but they never learn the skills associated with the military order that they are in charge of.
I know that in the past, most Cygnian Nobles were the same way.
They learned to use a sword and bow at a young age, and then just relied on their wealth to get the most expensive magitech weapons and remain at a distance while giving orders.”
Alexis laughed. “Ironically, that’s how the Riflemen began. Now, with the success of the last war, they’re becoming our main cavalry force. Noblemen and commoners who have ascended the ranks alike, fighting from horseback with magitech rifles.
However, I have one more item that I think your people will want. It most likely escaped Dominic’s mind.”
She took out a stack of Fire Resistance amulets and placed them on the table.
They were a simple magitech item, hardly considered expensive, and not as effective as putting fire immunity circuitry on a full armour suit. But for a bunch of Trolls, they would help enough that things like torches or flaming weapons would be a minor threat.
Only magical fire would be a real threat unless they were standing in it.
“Oh, this will make the Daves so happy.”
Alistair snorted with laughter, and Marshall smiled.
“Did you know that two thirds of all male trolls are named Dave?”
“And most of the rest are Larry.” Dominic agreed.
“The ladies have much more creativity, but there are far fewer female trolls than male. It’s an oddity that none of us have ever managed to explain. Rarely will a female troll have more than one or two daughters.”
“The mother of our group here has fifty sons and no daughters.” Dominic agreed.
“That’s a lot of Daves.”
Dave laughed, and in the distance, the others did as well, as he relayed the message.
“In exchange for the amulets, I will trade you another spell. I have [Attunement], which increases the rate that mages learn skills at. I don’t know how well it will work on other types of spell casters, or on magitech items. But it’s bound to be useful to at least a few of you.”
Dominic nodded. “If it works to help speed the attunement of spell gems and magitech devices, it will be a huge one for us.
However, I’ve never heard of it before, or I would have tried it.
Where did you find it? Or was it something that simply fell out of favour around these parts, while remaining in use in the southwest?”
Marshall shrugged. “This is one that we’ve had as long as I remember. It’s an uncommon spell, I don’t know why others don’t use it. Mostly because there are other methods for mages to learn spells that are more effective, I suppose.
It doesn’t work with the [Knowledge Transfer] spell that most mages use to teach their students, you see.
And since they’ve learned the basics of the spell and just need to elevate their skill with it, that makes [Attunement] worthless for them. However, with few master mages left, many of our mages learn from ancient tomes and spell gems, studying and using them until they have the spell memorized and functional.
This speeds that process.”
“I’ll accept that as payment, then.” Dominic agreed.
He didn’t need to keep the gem, only record it in the Sorcerer’s Spellbook. If it worked on magitech, it would be spectacular. If not, there was no loss. In fact, it might be useful if his heir was a mage instead of a blacksmith.
They had a little one on the way, so there was no harm in preparing for every possible outcome.
Dominic recorded the spell into the Sorcerer’s Spellbook and activated it.
The effect was immediate and obvious. The book began to feel easier to access, and the power of the recorded spells began to surge. With [Attunement] activated through the book, it improved with the item, which increased the effect as the spell worked.
It wasn’t going to be instant, or even fast, but Dominic was certain that with only a few weeks of constant work, he might make the level twenty standard for a Master Mage.
“It does work on magitech items. It improves the user’s attunement to the item the longer that it is deliberately activated,” he informed Alexis.
“Now I feel like we underpaid. Give the man a bonus.”
Dominic laughed. “Alright, I’ve got another bonus item handy.”
He had made a whole batch of pistols while showing the process to the Royals, after all.
They also weren’t officially a military item. Many of the Natural Sons used them, but they weren’t part of the issued kit. They were a sidearm that was added for utility instead of using their spears or swords.
“Two pistols in one day? The officers will fight over this for weeks.” General Marshall joked.
Alexis smiled at him. “You know, if you can make us a lot more of some specific spell gems, we could provide you with many more of them.”
They were short of spell gems for the new students, and the mages they had were already overworked with all the plans for infrastructure development and new homes in the Wistover region.
