’Perfect. Now… let’s eat.’
Grey flexed his jaw and chomped. Fluttering flames that almost looked like the final embers of a fallen race sparked and flew from the corner of his mouth.
He picked up a piece of metal and ate. When he realized his stomach wasn’t going to get in his way anymore, he knew he had bet correctly.
INT was a measure of how well he could use and direct energy. If it was too low, then Metal Affinity would be too low. And if Metal Affinity was too low, then he would be limited in how well Metal Digestion could work. And if Metal Digestion was too low, then how could he eat and fuel his Metal Body and other abilities?
It was like before he had been a clogged pipe and now he had finally fit the plunger over the toilet bowl just right.
All the waste was sucked away and his body became like a sponge.
His Metal Abilities ticked up again, and then again. Almost instantly, they reached Level 5 smoothly and then just kept pushing upward to Level 6, and then Level 7.
It was only there that Grey began to feel a familiar weakness. His stomach churned as though he was in the early stages of food poisoning, and his mouth started making larger and larger amounts of saliva as though prepping him to chuck up everything he had eaten.
’Come on… Come on… just one more level… just one more level…’
Grey pulled on the waistband of Fitz’s Nexis Suit like making more room would help with the sickness, but in a beautiful twist of fate, that was exactly what it did.

Grey clenched and unclenched his fists, an understanding coming over him.
He had already felt that there was some harmony between stats and abilities, they fed off of one another for sure. But he didn’t really understand it until now.
Stats themselves were the actual foundation that Abilities were built upon. If your Stats didn’t reflect the appropriate amount of strength, no amount of Ability improvement would make you stronger.
Goblin Warlord Spirit was probably stuck at Level 5 because the rest of his stats couldn’t improve it far enough.
’If I want Goblin Warlord Spirit to be better, I’ll probably need, what? Perception and Dexterity, most likely. It’s an Ability that enhances my combat skill, and those are probably the two most important factors. My PER is only 23 and my DEX is only 27.
’If the logic of 10 stat points per level is consistent, then they’re at about Level 2, while Goblin Warlord Spirit is three beyond that. That’s pretty consistent.
’It looks like I can stretch the limit a little bit, but not too much. INT and END are both at “level 6”, and because of that, the Abilities that rely on them can be at Level 8, but there’s no way I can make it to Level 9.’
A lot of this was logical, but Grey almost felt like the more his body changed, the more he felt those changes, and the more intuition toward these things that he gained.
But what was more important than any of that to him was that Esmeralda was right.
His stamina had finally gone up, and it still felt like it was increasing. Almost like a shoe that was being broken in, with enough time, it would only continue to improve further and further.
Almost as though on cue.

’It feels good.’ Grey took a breath and exhaled. ’Now. What can I do about that damned Vampire Pimp.’
Grey looked toward the materials.
He had a feeling that this just might kill him a few more times. But… it was a necessary evil.
’Set a new checkpoint. I don’t want to fight that bitch again.’
**
There was silence in the private room.
Caldrin’s fluorescent, silky violet skin had lost all its color, deepening into a dark black that exuded death.
Grey had won. Again. And he was quickly improving in ways that they were finding difficult to control.
How could a Cracked World produce a technician of such skill so early on? Only the more established worlds should have such a thing.
No, Grey was no technician… he was already beyond that.
A genius. It was the only way they could describe it.
“This is your doing, Caldrin.”
The octopus beast stiffened.
Ever since he blackmailed Associate Producer Gard, the man had hardly said a word at all. It was like he was completely immune to rage or anger.
He sat there in complete and utter silence, only speaking when he had some input. Thanks to him, Caldrin actually felt that they had an airtight plan for the Canon Event, but something about it still left Caldrin feeling uneasy…
Almost like Gard was an active volcano waiting to explode any moment now.
“If the boy survives this Dark Kin Instance, our plans for the Canon Event will surely fail. This has spiralled out of control.”
Caldrin’s heart sank to rock bottom.
**
In a room separated from everything else, a familiar spider woman hazarded a glance toward the chairs of Gard and Caldrin once again. Those two were still gone at such a critical point.
She knew something big was happening.
Suddenly, she received a ping.
