Watch Me - Page 95
As I’m washing my hands, Rachel walks in. She nods at me before going into a stall.
“How long have you worked at Morrigan?” she calls out.
It surprises me. Breaking some sort of girl code about talking with a stranger in the bathroom while peeing. “A week.”
“Fresh meat,” she mutters, but I hear her.
“Sorry, I didn’t catch that.” I turn off the water and dry my hands.
“You should know there are catches to your work situation.” She flushes and, after a moment, comes out. As her eyes drag over me, she washes her hands.
“Catches?” I play dumb.
“You seem young and naive enough that you might fall for their whole thing, but trust me, they’re perverted men.” She shakes her head and leans in conspiratorially. “I can’t tell you any details, but you should find another job before they give you their secondary offer.”
She gives a little shudder like it was horrifying. Maybe to her it was.
“You want me to give up a job you walked away from because they offered you something that made you think they’re perverts?” I raise my eyebrows and put a lot of skepticism in my tone. “That sounds a lot like sour grapes.”
She shrugs her shoulders. “I’m just a woman trying to warn another woman, but I can’t fully disclose the situation.”
Ah, the NDA. So that’s what’s keeping her mouth shut.
“I’m sure I’ll be fine.” When I try to walk past her, she grabs my wrist.
“You ever wonder why these men always hire pretty, young assistants?” Rachel’s fingers clasp my wrist. I want to shake her off, but I don’t.
Shrugging, I give her Noah’s answer. “Eye candy?”
She snorts and releases me, as if she’s giving up on me entirely. “Whatever. I tried to warn you. My job is done.”
I meet her eyes and smile. “Just because you didn’t like what they were offering doesn’t mean I won’t.”
Chapter 29
Confession
Seth
Sitting across the table from Rachel is brutal. I was the one who wanted her. The one who fought for her. The one who fucked it all up and lost a perfectly good assistant by asking too much.
When Madison goes to the restroom, Jason draws my attention and leans in to say, for my ears only, “Your new assistant is just as hot as the last one.”
“Smart as a whip too.” Pride fills my chest.
“Surprised you let Rachel go.”
My gaze darts to where Rachel sat, but she isn’t there. “We didn’t really have a choice. She put in her two weeks, and no amount of convincing could change her mind.”
I waited too long to offer the sexual arrangement. She lived with us for six months and did a great job in the office. We even got to be friends somewhat, but she always held herself apart from us.
When I let her know I was attracted to her and wanted to pursue something, she seemed willing to be with me. But when I opened up about how being in relationships with different women made things difficult for us, so we found that sharing worked best… it all fell apart.
“Your loss of Rachel is our gain.” Jason leans back and grins. “Such an amazing assistant, and good looking too.”
Jason hires the best for his company. The best at the job and the best looking. He wants his office to be as conceited as him.
Madison slips back into the room and takes her seat. Her cheeks are flushed, and a smile graces her face, but tension lines her shoulders. Rachel comes in a minute later and sits at the table.
