Chapter 545: Chapter 545 – Taming the Fourth Year: Connections – Seeking Guidance – 2
Ren arrived at the hallway leading to Finch’s ‘open office,’ mentally preparing for the banker’s dramatic comments and Theodore’s antics. But when he approached the window, he stopped upon realizing someone was already being attended.
Rather, three people.
Roran, Trent, and Jun were standing in front of the counter, their voices carrying that particular secretive tone that boys in their puberty had when they believed they were talking about “mature” topics.
Ren obviously recognized them immediately… They were classmates from his same year and attended in several of the same classes, all beneficiaries of the cultivation methods he had developed.
Roran now had a Silver 2 Giant Troll Dog, an impressive beast that would have cost him double the years of careful cultivation to achieve. Trent had managed to get his Fire Queen Ant to the same rank, and Jun had successfully cultivated his Silver Monkey to Silver 2 as well.
Without Ren’s methods, they would probably still be stuck in Bronze or would have obtained different species without much evolutionary potential.
The three were now roommates, a situation that had resulted from some changes in student residences. Jun had previously shared a room with Han and another boy from group A, but after the crystallization, he had been transferred to Roran and Trent’s room.
He had replaced Vern, who had previously been roommates with Roran and Trent, since Vern had transferred schools along with Hector and many other students from Goldcrest territory families when that family had the first altercations in the academy grounds… and practically all of them finished leaving when they had been declared fully treasonous.
Another group that had changed residences was Mira and Sora, who now shared a room with Mayo in Rosalind’s absence, but Mayo was one of Luna and Liora’s maids… Although Mayo in paper lived in her assigned room, she spent most of her time in Luna and Liora’s larger room, which could easily accommodate 4 people, similar to the 4 people who remained in Ren’s room instead of the usual 3 in rooms that didn’t belong to the gray wing.
From his position in line, Ren could hear fragments of the boys’ conversation.
“…I’m telling you there are other fish in the sea,” Trent was saying, clearly trying to console someone.
“It’s easy to say when you’re not the one drowning in the ocean,” Roran responded with the voice of a defeated romantic.
Ren frowned. What were they talking about?
“Look,” Jun continued, “Sora is pretty and all, but there are many other girls who are more…” he made gestures with his hands that suggested curves in places that were beginning to develop in their female classmates, “you know, more… developed.”
Ah. Ren felt his cheeks warm slightly. Apparently Roran had confessed something to Sora and had been rejected, and his friends were trying to cheer him up with the classic “there are more options available” speech.
Ren could understand it to a certain extent. He was also thirteen now and was beginning to notice things that hadn’t caught his attention before. His interests were changing in ways that sometimes confused and made him uncomfortable. But his classmates’ specific conversation was causing him particular discomfort, especially because he feared they might involve him in it.
Discretely, he tried to back away with what would have been a moonwalk if he had known what that was.
“Ren!” Roran’s voice stopped him dead. “Perfect timing, brother!”
Too late to escape.
The three boys approached and practically dragged him toward the counter.
“Look, we need your expert opinion,” Trent said with a smile that made Ren immediately suspicious.
“Expert on what?” he asked cautiously.
“Well,” Jun cleared his throat dramatically, “Roran here just discovered that unrequited love is painful, and we were explaining to him that there are many other available options.”
“And you,” Roran added, pointing at him accusingly, “definitely know more about that than we do because you’re always surrounded by the prettiest girls in school.”
Ren’s eyes widened enormously.
“It’s not…! I don’t…!”
“Come on,” Trent laughed, “Luna, Liora, even older ones like Master Lin or that girl from the warehouse, Jessy. They all clearly have special affection for you.”
“They’re just friends!” Ren protested, feeling his face turn red.
“Of course they’re ‘just friends’,” Jun made air quotes. “But surely you’ve noticed… you know… changes in how they see you lately… So tell us your secrets!”
The three boys looked at him expectantly, as if he were about to reveal some deep secret about female relationships.
Ren was completely paralyzed, having no idea how to respond to that question… he had to admit that, indeed, he had begun to notice things he hadn’t noticed before. But he had no idea why.
Thankfully he was saved by Finch’s dramatic arrival.
“My dear students!” the banker exclaimed, emerging from the back office with Theodore dramatically positioned on his shoulder. “Your loans have been approved!”
Ren immediately noticed that both Finch and Theodore had small bioluminescent mushrooms growing from their heads, exactly like his used to do. It was an almost surreal sight.
“Finch!” Ren practically shouted with relief, taking advantage of the distraction to change the subject. “How have you been? And Theodore?”
“Ah, my greatest personal benefactor!” Finch practically jumped over the counter in his enthusiasm. “Both Theodore and I have been thriving thanks to the new employment and cultivation techniques you provided us! Look at these magnificent mushrooms!”
The small mushrooms on their heads pulsed with synchronized light, as if they were part of a rehearsed performance too.
Ren sighed with a smile, wondering if it had really been convenient to take Finch as his accountant.
“I’m glad to know you’re advancing well.”
“Yes, these are things to celebrate without doubt… not like…” Finch continued while handing money bags to Roran, Trent, and Jun, “these young gentlemen… I hope they’re not planning to use their withdrawals for… activities inappropriate for their age. I already suggested that their tiny accounts weren’t sufficient for such… endeavors.”
The three boys made grimaces of silence, clearly feeling they had been betrayed by the banker.
Finch chuckled while Theodore nodded solemnly.
Ren looked at his classmates with an expression that clearly said ‘I’m disappointed in you,’ which made all three immediately lower their heads in genuine shame.
“It’s just natural and healthy curiosity from boys our age,” Roran murmured defensively, but his voice sounded like that of a small child who had been caught with his hand in the cookie jar.
“Exactly,” Jun added. “Perfectly normal biological interest.”
“Completely innocent scientific inquiry,” Trent finished.
Ren sighed deeply.
“Finch,” he said, deliberately ignoring his embarrassed classmates, “I need to make a withdrawal too. Some tens of thousands for some gifts.”
“Oh!” Finch’s eyes lit up. “Gifts! For special occasions?”
