Chapter 796 – Taming the Fifth Year – Genius – 4
The lynx struck the bird’s wings with its claws. Not enough damage to break the bond immediately, Larissa didn’t want to cause unnecessary pain to Mayo.
But enough damage to “cripple” and send the bird tumbling out of flight.
It fell and landed heavily on the arena floor where it was vulnerable.
Mayo saw it as it was and decided she couldn’t win with only poor water control anymore, so she recalled it quickly before further damage could accumulate.
One opponent down.
Larissa turned her attention to the remaining threat of this team.
Matilda…
♢♢♢♢
Matilda’s tree turtle had been attempting to establish its minefield of “pointy trees”.
But without the mist to hide the trap placement…
Without time pressure from Luna’s offensive capabilities…
Any traps were visible to anyone paying attention. Or with mana eyes.
Larissa smiled slightly.
She has been punishing the “slow to act” turtle with air blades, cutting at its Vitality from a distance. But it was time to finish this.
“Avoid the mana dense zones and engage directly,” she ordered.
The Lynx descended in a fast dive, landing twenty meters from the turtle with perfect spatial awareness.
And began circling with speed that made tracking difficult.
The turtle tried rotating to keep the Lynx facing where its defenses were strongest.
But the Lynx was too fast for such simple tactics.
It darted in from the side, struck, and retreated before a counterattack could land.
Then attacked from a different angle immediately.
The turtle’s armor was impressive. Could withstand significant punishment.
But it couldn’t defend against attacks from multiple angles simultaneously when the attacker moved faster than it could rotate.
Hit and run. Classic tactics against slower beasts.
Matilda ordered the turtle to activate its traps defensively as a last resource, trying to create a protected zone to tire Larissa’s beast out.
But the Lynx moving fast and launching wind blades was simply “playing”, it cut only some of those areas with precision born from seeing them established.
And continued its relentless assault from specific angles…
The ones where the weaker points in the turtle’s body were.
Within two more minutes, the turtle’s defensive posture was failing.
Within three, it had accumulated enough damage that continuing would risk breaking the bond.
Matilda withdrew it with a frustrated expression as she realized the Lynx wasn’t going to get tired anytime soon.
Two down.
Larissa had eliminated both Mayo and Matilda’s primary beasts without taking damage herself.
And the Lynx still looked fresh, barely winded from the brief engagement.
In the stands, observers murmured with appreciation for the efficiency displayed.
“She made it look easy,” someone commented.
“That’s because she knows exactly how they fight,” another responded. “Trained with them for years. Knows their every weakness.”
“Still impressive execution though. The Lynx’s control is exceptional… And shouldn’t it go both ways?”
Larissa heard none of the commentary.
She was already concentrated on the next opponents waiting in her team’s bracket.
She’d demonstrated that her training with the Lynx was producing results.
That Ren’s cultivation methods worked for her beasts as effectively as they should.
♢♢♢♢
Mayo stood in front of Larissa, dusting off her uniform with exaggerated theatrical gestures.
“Well,” she announced loudly enough for nearby spectators to hear, “I have to admit there’s something almost exciting about being so thoroughly dominated and punished by our young lady… It was a very educational experience.”
She grinned wickedly at Larissa while Matilda covered her face with one hand in secondhand embarrassment.
“Mayo…” Matilda warned.
“What? I’m just saying!” Mayo continued with mock innocence. “The way she predicted every move, controlled the entire battlefield, made us look like complete amateurs IN FRONT OF EVERYONE…” She fanned herself dramatically. “Some people pay good money for THAT KIND of treatment.”
Larissa sighed heavily, though the corner of her mouth twitched slightly despite her best efforts to maintain composure.
“You do realize I know you’re trying to make this weird on purpose,” Larissa said with tone mixing exasperation and reluctant amusement.
“Of course,” Mayo responded cheerfully. “But someone has to keep things entertaining around here. Or all these easy battles will get boring for you.”
She walked closer to Larissa and her expression shifted slightly, becoming more playful.
“Besides,” Mayo added with knowing smirk, “now it’s your turn to be on the RECEIVING end when you face Ren. Fair warning… he’s much better at this whole ‘DOMINATING the battlefield’ thing than you are. Though I suppose you already know that from your “training” sessions.”
Larissa’s cheeks colored slightly at the implication, though whether from embarrassment or annoyance was unclear.
“That’s way out of context in your mind and you know it,” she said while sighting.
“Is it only in my mind though?” Mayo’s grin widened. “Because from what I’ve seen, he’s quite the sadist and when it comes to belly rubs…”
“Mayo, I swear…”
Matilda finally intervened by physically pulling Mayo back a step.
“Ignore her,” Matilda uttered to Larissa with an apologetic expression. “She is just butt hurt, she gets like this after losses. Deflects with inappropriate humor.”
“It’s a coping mechanism!” Mayo protested. “A very healthy one, I might add.”
Larissa jerked her head but extended her hand toward both of them in a gesture of genuine respect.
“Thank you both,” she said seriously, cutting through Mayo’s continued antics. “For your service and your attitude as always. I apologize if I made you ‘look bad’ out there, but winning decisively was what I needed to do for myself.”
Mayo’s theatrical expression softened slightly as she took Larissa’s hand.
“You didn’t make us look bad,” she said with more sincerity than usual. “You made yourself look good. There’s a difference. And honestly, we knew what we were up against. We never had a real chance.”
Matilda nodded agreement while shaking Larissa’s hand as well.
“You fought well,” she added. “Better than we expected, actually. That aerial pursuit was impressive.”
“Though I maintain my earlier point,” Mayo couldn’t resist adding. “When Ren does the same thing to you later, remember this feeling. That’s karma for you.”
Larissa rolled her eyes but smiled despite herself.
