- Chapter 1097 1097: When Your Inugami Wants Attention

Well… Not sure why the mood seemed to change that night but everything went back to normal after our usual nightly orgy so by the time morning came, I pretty much forgot about it.
There was a small change in our escort as we ended up joining another group of caravans that was also heading in the same direction as we were.
This group had way more people but they were also in the same position where all their wagons were used to transport goods so the escorts had to walk on foot surrounding the wagons which slowed down the group.
Since there were more people now, it felt a little safer since monsters and bandits would be less likely to target such a large group even if they were laying an ambush.
That’s not to say that we were completely relaxed though, since this meant that if we actually got attacked, the monster or bandits would either outnumber us or would be really confident of taking on this number of opponents.
Still… As long as the opponent isn’t some powerful dragon or something, I think we should be able to handle it anyway.
On another note…
“Katsuki, is something wrong?” I asked.
“Not at all, Mistress. Why would you ask that?”
I looked at her who had been practically stuck to me ever since the morning.
Normally she would at least be a step or two behind me but now she was practically pressing herself against me as we were walking.
Heck, at this point she might as well be holding my hand instead but she’s still acting like nothing weird was going on.
I gave her a serious look, “Are you not feeling well, Katsuki?”
“Not at all, Mistress.”
It certainly doesn’t look like you’re feeling well at all… Since you’re acting so differently than normal…
Oh no! Even if Katsuki isn’t feeling well, she would definitely tell me that she was fine to stop me from worrying! How could I miss that!
That means she could be sick right now!
I turned to face her and grabbed her shoulders, “Katsuki! Are you sick? Maybe a cold? Let me see… You don’t have a fever… No wait! Your face feels a little hot! You are sick, aren’t you?! You should have told me! Lisa! Lisa!”
I yelled for our party’s alchemist who immediately came running over.
“What, what? Are you horny, Aster? Because I’m up for some-“
“No! I think Katsuki is sick! Hurry! Do you have a potion that can cure her?!”
Lisa blinked at me in surprise before turning to look at Katsuki.
I thought she was still clueless about what was happening and I was about to repeat myself again when Lisa turned to me with a deadpan look.
“You can just heal her, Aster.”
Oh… Right. Err… To be fair, I was panicking a little that I forgot I could heal.
I quickly cast [Heal] on Katsuki, letting my magic work on her and hopefully eliminating any illness she had.
She took a step back and bowed, “Thank you, Mistress. I apologise for worrying you.”
I sighed, “Please just tell me if you aren’t feeling well, next time, Katsuki. There’s no need to put on airs in front of me, ok?”
“Understood, Mistress. I apologise again for troubling you.”
I couldn’t help but reach out and pat her head, “There’s no such thing, Katsuki. You are precious to me, ok? There’s no way I would think this is ‘troubling’ to me at all.”
She straightened herself and… Hmm? Is it just me or does she look a little smug?
Her face was still the usual look where she had a completely neutral expression but it looks like her lips were curled a little higher than normal? Additionally, her tail seemed to be wagging in a rather weird way too…
And she looks like she’s looking specifically at Carrey as well?
But right after that, the feeling disappeared like I had simply imagined the entire thing.
I wonder what that was about?
Carrey also doesn’t seem to understand either since she was just looking in our direction with a confused tilt of her head.
At least we didn’t slow down the convoy since we were already moving relatively slowly from the start.
As we continued to escort the caravan, I realised Katsuki still remained near me despite me healing her.
Granted, she wasn’t so close to the point of touching me anymore but she was still less than an arm’s length away from me.
I’m pretty sure I healed her already so I wonder what this was about?
I didn’t get to ask her because Carrey showed up beside me while giving Katsui a concerned look, “Katsuki? Are you sure you’re alright?”
Katsuki did not turn to her, “Yes. I am quite alright after Mistress healed me. Thank you for your concern.”
“Umm… If you want to… I could carry you on my back? Despite how I look, I am still quite strong?”
“That is unnecessary. Please do not neglect your role of keeping watch just because there are more escorts now, miss Carrey.”
My other slave bowed her head, “Ah, of course. My apologies, Katsuki.”
Right then, a horn sounded from the front of the group which was a signal that someone had spotted something.
Everyone was instantly on alert and the source of the alarm quickly made itself known.
A large Wyvern soared through the air above us, its wings beating powerfully and sending a gust of wind blowing through the convoy.
I readied myself for a fight but it didn’t seem like the Wyvern was interested in us at all as it simply flew away without even looking at us.
I guess that was a false alarm…
Right as everyone started to relax, a few more horns blew from the front and we were back to being alert once more.
“Monster stampede! Monster stampede!” Someone shouted.
Ah… The Wyvern must have scared a few monsters and caused them to run towards the road to escape it even though it wasn’t even targeting them.
But because of the panic, they weren’t able to realise that and were now running towards our convoy in full panic.
While they shouldn’t be able to fight well in that panicked state, there must be a lot of them and getting trampled under that horde isn’t going to be nice either.
“Katsuki–“
She disappeared and reappeared almost instantly before I could finish my words.
“Mistress, there’s a horde of Wolves, Goblins and Orcs running straight towards the convoy from the front. I estimate the numbers to be between fifty to seventy.”
As expected of Katsuki.
“Everyone! There’s a monster stampede coming from the front of the convoy! Our priority is to either eliminate or turn the monsters away from us! Make sure none of them gets close to the wagons!” I shouted.
I even made sure to call out the instructions in a louder voice than needed so the other Mercenaries in front of us would catch on to the situation as well.
They understood my intent and a few of them nodded in my direction before their leader started arranging them to prepare for a fight as well.
Millie peeked out from the wagon, “Big sister… Fight?”
Her mother quickly hugged her and pulled her into the wagon to hide her, “Millie… Stay inside. It’s dangerous now.”
“Yes, mama.”
Seems like this has also happened to them before so they knew not to cause any trouble while an attack was happening.
All of us rushed towards the front of the convoy to join up with the other Mercs, most of them having already arranged themselves in a defensive line.
Seems like everyone is a veteran here so there’s no need to worry about these people making stupid mis–
Some one started walking out of the defense line towards the monster stampede casually, like he was just out for a stroll.
E… Eh? Hello? What is this guy trying to do?
I wasn’t the only person who was thinking that because a few others shouted at him to get back before he got himself trampled by the horde.
The guy ignored all of us and pointed his hand towards the horde while muttering something under his breath.
Wait… Is he going to cast magic? What kind of magic is he going to–
“[Explosion]!”
There was a flash of light above the monster horde and someone seemed to have turned up the brightness for just a moment before everything went silent.
The flash turned into a giant dome of light that completely engulfed the monster horde right before it exploded, leaving behind a large mushroom cloud that reached high up into the air.
The shockwave then crashed into us and a few of the other Mercs actually ended up losing their footing and fell onto the floor.
When the dust cloud settled, the only thing remaining was a large crater in the middle of the road with no monsters remaining.
…
…
You idiot!! You destroyed all the loot!!! And how are we supposed to move the wagons with that giant hole now?!!
