Chapter 1134: Don’t Shout In The Forest
“How far do we need to walk?” I asked, hopping over an exposed tree root that was the size of a car.
The trees in this forest were massive and they seemed to just keep getting bigger and bigger the deeper we go.
I can see why cutting down the trees to build roads was not feasible.
“It will be a three day trek, Mistress. There’s a clearing up ahead that we would be able to make camp in.”
“Is that information that is carved on the trees as well?”
“Yes, Mistress.”
The guide thing is really a scam I see. So as long as you can read the signs on the trees, you would be completely fine.
Well… That’s assuming you know where to look I guess?
I looked behind me to check that everyone was doing fine since we had been trekking through the forest for a few hours already and they might be tired.
But all of them still looked completely fine and barely even winded at all, which made me remember that they were all used to long journeys like this and would even have the strength for a fight at the end if we had to.
Guess we had indeed come a long way from how we were a few years ago, huh?
Carrey also seemed to be doing well which came as no surprise since this forest was also her home as well, though it would be located further to the north past the Nekinumi Kingdom.
As we continued, we heard some shouting coming from ahead of us.
I saw Katsuki’s tail tense up for a moment and I knew that reaction meant that it most probably isn’t a good thing and I believe I know why.
Considering where we were, all that noise might attract monsters to our location so whoever was making that noise either didn’t care or didn’t know about such a basic problem.
Katsuki turned to me, “We might need to make a detour, Mistress.”
I nodded and she started to lead us towards the side when the shouting suddenly went silent.
I thought that it might have ended when screams suddenly replaced the shouts and by how it was getting louder and louder, whoever was screaming was running in our direction.
Great…
All of us moved to the side and hid behind the tree, using one of the roots as cover right as a small group of people came running out of the bushes, most of them carrying large bags on their backs.
Despite carrying such big bags, they were running pretty quickly and a majority of the group seemed to be Nekomatas with the few being Mahuns.
I looked behind them to see what exactly they were running away from and I got my answer in the form of a group of giant bears that came running out after them.
The bears were so huge that it looked like a group of buildings were chasing after them instead.
These weren’t just normal bears either as they had a mane made of earth jutting out of its neck while lightning coursed along its arms. Its eyes were also leaking out a misty blue fog as it ran too.
I realised that I saw a variation of these bears before and I immediately used [Screened] on it.
[Name: Frostearth Thunder Bear
Race: Monster
Stats:
350 Strength
80 Dexterity
500 Endurance
250 Magic
Magic Skills:
Cryomancy (Tier 2), Geomancy (Tier 2) Electromancy (Tier 2)]
Oh yeah! I met the Frostfire variant of this monster before! I guess this one was its distant cousin living in the forest or something. And it can’t use fire since that would have burned down the forest if it could.
I peeked at the group running away from the bears again and most of them seemed to be merchants.
Though there were two or three that were clearly Mercenaries hired to escort them since they were the only ones not carrying an oversized bag, they were definitely not enough to deal with such a large group of bears like this.
The only reason why the bears have not caught up to them was only because of the trees and themselves getting in each other’s way.
“Should we help them?” I asked.
Katsuki turned to me, “If we don’t, they will most likely be killed and they might attract even more monsters later, Mistress. I would suggest that we take out the bears.”
Well, since Katsuki says so.
I turned to my girls and nodded, all of them already with their weapons drawn and ready. Even Carrey had her bow out as well while Ather had summoned up her usual two pistols.
Odeta jumped out first and led the charge after I buffed her with [Strength], the boost allowing her to leap all the way above the bears before crashing down on top of them and smashing one into the ground.
The crash caught the attention of the other bears and they skidded to a halt to turn towards Odeta, my Amrap slowly straightening herself on top of the bear’s corpse to grin at the other bears mockingly.
The merchants also slowly stopped running and turned to look behind them, realising that someone had come to their rescue.
Odeta then stretched out her hand and gave the bears a come hither motion, taunting them.
The bear that was closest to her reared up and raised its paws and lightning surged around its limbs before it tried to slam down on top of Odeta.
It never got the chance however, as Emilia and Katsuki appeared beside it and their blades slashed out, cutting off both its limbs in a single strike.
An arrow then buried itself into the bear’s chest, piercing through it until it sailed out of its back on the other side, leaving a hole that you could see through the bear.
Despite that, the bear wasn’t dead yet and even let out a roar of pain.
That soon changed when Odeta jumped up and grabbed the bear by its head before smashing her knee into the bottom of its chin.
She hit it with enough force that the bear’s jaw broke and smashed straight into its own head, blowing the top of its head open with its skull and brain matter exploding out like confetti.
Ugh… The blood from the bear also spilled onto Odeta, drenching her completely. You’re going to need a bath again, Odeta… Guess I’ll just give her a rinse with my Hydromancy later.
Another bear opened its mouth and frost started to gather in its mouth, the bear clearly intent on using some kind of ice attack on Odeta.
But before it could, Lisa had finished her chant and a beam of light shot through the bear’s head, interrupting the spell.
Yet even with that, the bear was also not dead yet and merely stumbled back from having a hole pierced through its head.
These things have really strong resilience huh…
Delmare then appeared in front of it, her rapier poised in front of her with water gathered along her blade.
She thrust the blade forward and the water on the blade shot towards the bear and pierced its head as well, the bear letting out a low growl of pain before it fell onto its back, dead.
The other bears finally realised the threat we posed and all of them decided to start rushing towards us without holding back.
Hmm, hmm~ Not on my watch~
I went ahead to cast [Darkness Paranoia] on the bear at the very front, robbing it of its sight and blinding it.
My spell also intensified the fear it was feeling and I was sure after it witnessed how the first two bears had been brutalised, it at least felt a bit of fear from that.
I turned out to be right as the bear reacted quite violently to the spell as it immediately reared up and tried to run away, except that it ran straight towards its own brethren that was behind it.
The fear then overtook its rationality when they collided and it thought they were enemies and started swiping at them instead, its claws slashing against the face of another bear.
The rest of them got distracted by this one going crazy which gave Ather the chance to leap over them to land above the last bear, unloading her mag into the head of the bear she was standing on.
Once again, the bear’s uncanny resilience showed as despite having been shot several times in the head, it was still alive and tried to swipe at Ather on top of its head.
She leapt away from it and continued raining fire down on it while in the air until the bear finally dropped dead after being riddled with bullet holes all over its body.
The remaining bears weren’t really a threat anymore since their attention was all on the rampaging bear and my girls just picked them off one by one before they concentrated on the last bear to put it down.
All that and not even a single scratch on our side.
Perfect teamwork, girls! Now let’s go extort– Ahem… I mean, let’s see if the merchants there will reward us!
